BYD plans to bring all-solid-state batteries to EVs by 2027

The next generation of EV batteries may be closer than expected. BYD and several others plan to begin deploying EVs with all-solid-state batteries in just a few months. All-solid-state EV batteries hit the market in 2027 Solid-state battery tech took a major leap this year, with a new “milestone” or “breakthrough” reported seemingly every week. China’s SAIC Motor launched the new MG4 as “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” electric vehicle last year, but the company is now gearing up to introduce its all-solid-state EV batteries in 2027. Earlier this year, SAIC and Chinese partner Qingtao Energy produced an electric vehicle prototype equipped with its “Guangqi” all-solid-state battery. Over the next few months, the companies will continue testing prototypes as they aim for mass production in 2027. BYD will pay for crashes on its FSD competitor, something Tesla never has

BYD will pay for crashes on its FSD competitor, something Tesla never has

BYD Seagull EV testing with God’s Eye C smart driving system (Source: BYD) BYD says it will assume full financial liability for at-fault accidents that happen while its “God’s Eye” urban driving system is active in China — with no cap on the payout. It’s a commitment Tesla has never made for “Full Self-Driving,” and it flips the industry’s standard liability model on its head. What BYD actually committed to BYD announced the policy on May 28 at its vehicle intelligence strategy event, the same showcase where it revealed China’s first in-house 4nm smart driving chip. Under the new guarantee, if a driver is using BYD’s urban “navigate-on-autopilot” function in compliance with regulations and is at fault in a crash, BYD will cover all direct economic losses the vehicle is liable for — repairs to the owner’s car, third-party property damage, and personal injury. There’s no payout cap, owners don’t need to buy a separate “intelligent driving insurance” product, and a claim won’t raise …

According to BYD, the new Xuanji A3 smart driving chip has already entered mass production. The bigger news, however, is that unlike most automakers that outsource chips, BYD builds the chips entirely in-house, along with nearly every other vehicle component. Chuanfu said that BYD is now the only …

XPeng in talks to buy a Volkswagen plant in Europe as exports surge 62%

Volkswagen begins ID.UNYX 08 series production, its first EV developed with XPeng (Source: XPeng Motors) XPeng (XPEV) is in talks with Volkswagen about acquiring a factory in Europe as the Chinese EV maker’s contract production in Austria runs out of capacity. The company’s exports hit a record 6,006 vehicles in April, up 62% year-over-year. The move comes just one day after BYD revealed it is also pursuing European factory deals with Stellantis and other automakers, signaling a broader wave of Chinese automakers moving to localize production on the continent. XPeng outgrowing its Austrian production line Elvis Cheng, XPeng’s managing director of northeastern Europe, revealed the negotiations at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car summit on Wednesday. He confirmed XPeng is discussing with Volkswagen the possibility of finding a production location in Europe, according to a Financial Times report. XPeng currently builds vehicles for the European market at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria, which has been producing the G6 and G9 models since September 2025 to avoid the EU’s steep tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. …

China wants to build its own electric K-car industry to boost EV sales

China wants to build its own electric K-car industry to boost EV sales

China’s top auto industry group is calling for the creation of a standardized budget electric vehicle category — modeled on Japan’s wildly popular K-car ecosystem — to revive sluggish domestic car sales and bring millions of new buyers into the EV market. The proposal, from the head of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), would target elderly consumers and rural markets where cheap, unregulated electric vehicles have flourished dangerously for years. China’s low-end EV problem Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the CPCA, published the proposal in a WeChat post earlier this month. He argued that the shrinking of China’s low-end vehicle segment has become a “key bottleneck” restricting the recovery of the country’s auto industry. The problem is real. Despite electric vehicles now commanding over 60% market share in China — a historic milestone — overall domestic auto consumption remains weak. CPCA estimates show China’s retail NEV sales hit around 860,000 units in April, a slight uptick from 850,000 in March but still below the 905,000 units recorded a year earlier. The 19 Most Exciting Cars at the Beijing Auto Show 2026

The 19 Most Exciting Cars at the Beijing Auto Show 2026

While major motor shows in Europe and the United States are being forced to downsize or change their format, those in China continue to expand. With 1,451 vehicles on display, including 181 world premieres, the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2026 (also known as Auto China 2026) has become the largest auto show in history—and that’s in terms of both exhibition space and the number of vehicles on display. This fact itself reflects a shift in the center of gravity of the automotive industry, but that’s not all. A much larger structural transformation is actually taking place in China today. Previously, the focus was on low-priced electric vehicle models, but now price is no longer the primary point of competition. At the show, not only were there many high-end EVs and large SUVs from Chinese manufacturers equipped with advanced driver-assistance technologies and AI functions, but these technologies are also rapidly spreading to the lower price range. Chinese manufacturers’ cars offer many technologically impressive features. Lidar sensors, which use lasers for advanced driver assistance, are now …
