Can you use iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max cases with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and vice versa? Apple’s official answer is no, according to Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber. Apple said the camera plateau on the iPhone 18 Pro models is ever so slightly thicker this year. Gruber said the difference is one-tenth of a millimeter: 11.5mm vs. 11.4mm. It is a minor difference, but Apple would obviously prefer to sell you a new case. In practice, most cases should be interchangeable. In his personal testing, Gruber said his iPhone 17 Pro cases fit the iPhone 18 Pro models perfectly, as did iPhone 18 Pro cases on iPhone 17 Pro models. So, both generations of Apple-branded cases should work with both generations of iPhones, and many third-party cases should be fine too. Of course, there will probably be the odd third-party case that does not fit, but this is likely to be the rare exception rather than the norm. Helicobacter pylori (H pylori), a common bacteria that can infect the stomach, has been linked to more than one in five bowel cancer cases worldwide, according to a new analysis. The bacteria has already been associated with stomach cancer in some individuals. Now, research suggests exposure might also be linked with up to a fifth of bowel cancer cases, too. Meanwhile, those born in more recent decades may be more at risk of developing bowel cancer after exposure, the analysis suggested. Bowel cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death globally. In recent years, cases have been on the rise, including in younger people. Cancer Research UK said one in every 20 bowel cancer cancer cases in the UK occur in the under-50s. The number of people across the country who have gotten sick with measles is undoubtedly much higher because many don’t get tested, experts say. The new milestone, the highest number of confirmed cases since 1991, is yet another indication that the highly contagious virus is taking over, particularly in areas of the country with plummeting vaccination rates. Outbreaks are driving up healthcare costs and have led to hundreds of hospitalizations, including of children and pregnant women. “Measles is acting like it’s endemic now. There’s a lot of domestic transmission,” said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, who directed the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases before resigning last year. “If I were a betting person, I would expect 5,000-plus cases this year.” The ongoing outbreaks are threatening the country’s status of having eliminated measles in 2000. Nearly everyone who’s had measles caught the virus from a family member, a neighbor or another person within U.S. borders, experts say. Now, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, EU-backed researchers are testing a simpler way to find and treat the last remaining cases and eliminate the disease for good. Sleeping sickness has been all but eradicated, but a couple of hundred cases still continue to appear across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) – the second-largest country in Africa. Missing even a few could allow the disease to flare back to life. To track these cases down, mobile health teams travel from village to village, searching for the last people carrying the parasite. During the 1990s, the insect-borne disease is thought to have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives across western and central Africa. In 1998 alone, over 34 000 cases were reported, but the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated the true number of cases to be 10 times higher. Seventeen-year-old Brody Matteson went through hell in the last year of his life. Feeding tubes, blood transfusions, ambulance rides, intense nausea and bone-deep pain. He fought with astonishing courage, drawing on years of grit honed on the football field, but the disease continued to consume him. The outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Uganda is over but it is still not under control in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. Why police have been told to pause their use of AI in court cases

Police forces in England and Wales have been told to pause some uses of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in criminal justice work, including preparing court statements. The intervention follows concerns that commercial AI systems are being used in situations where accuracy, provenance and accountability are critical. Alex Murray, head of the Police.AI centre has said forces need to slow down and ensure AI systems are properly assessed before they are used in criminal justice work. The concern is not simply that AI can make mistakes. Generative AI can produce statements that sound plausible but are false. It’s a problem that becomes much more serious when those statements can influence an investigation or form part of a case presented in court. This has already happened. West Midlands Police used information generated by Microsoft Copilot while preparing material relating to a proposed ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters attending a football match against Aston Villa in November 2025.
