Sundar Pichai faces boos, walkout at Stanford graduation ceremony over Google’s Israel, ICE ties

Over the weekend, Google CEO Sundar Pichai faced a small revolt when he delivered his commencement speech at Stanford University, where he earned his graduate degree in materials science and engineering. About 200 students from the graduating class reportedly walked out, while others loudly booed the tech executive. The focus of the protest was Google’s defense ties — including Project Nimbus, the controversial $1.2 billion contract, shared with Amazon, to provide cloud and AI services to the Israeli military, as well as its relationship with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Student signs included phrases like “ICE SPIES WITH GOOGLE AI” and “GENOCIDE RUNS ON GOOGLE,” as well as “FREE FREE PALESTINE,” a press release associated with the protest notes. Students also waved Palestinian flags and shouted “free Palestine,” online video of the protest shows. “We are walking out because we refuse to glorify the corporations that fuel this violence and exercise our power to choose differently,” a statement associated with the protest reads. The walkout was organized by a number of campus activist …

A Native naming ceremony welcomes newly discovered spider into community of the land

PORTLAND, Ore.  (RNS and NPR) — A few years ago, Greta Binford was hiking in the Columbia River Gorge when she saw a spider that “looked different from anything that I normally see when I roll over rocks and logs in this area,” she said.  An evolutionary biologist at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, she thought the spider looked liked a Trogloraptor — a distinctive family of spiders that have a small extra hook on the end of their feet, which make them better at pouncing on and biting other spiders. The family only contained one known species, which lives about 350 miles away.   Over the next few years, Binford found more of these mystery spiders that her lab observed, analyzed and tested. It was, in fact, a Trogloraptor, but a new species. And when a new species is discovered, scientists get the honor of naming it, usually something that reflects the organism’s characteristics or some source of inspiration. But Binford’s lab decided to share it. “We had an idea, really spearheaded by …

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Shakira, Maná, Andrea Bocelli and a surprise appearance by Salma Hayek lit up the World Cup opening ceremony ahead of Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa on Thursday. Shakira performed “Dai Dai,” the tournament’s official song, with Burna Boy. The Colombian star had a hit with “Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)” from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and now seeks to score again. A good World Cup song, Shakira earlier told The Associated Press, “needs to definitely have rhythm. It has to be rhythmic. It has to make people want to dance. And it has to be an anthem as well. It has to make people want to sing along in unison, sing out loud at the top of their lungs.” Shakira has performed at previous World Cups, too: 2006 in Germany, 2010 in South Africa, and 2014 in Brazil. Lila Downs welcomed fans and players in Spanish, English, and the indigenous languages Mixtec and Nahuatl. “People of the world, welcome to Mexico,” said Downs, who wore a …
