Outgoing chair Powell delivers defence of Fed independence

Outgoing chair Powell delivers defence of Fed independence

WASHINGTON: Outgoing US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell on Sunday (May 31) delivered a staunch defence of the need for the central bank to maintain independence and credibility, as it comes under assault from President Donald Trump. “Like many other institutions, the Fed has been undergoing a stress test,” he said as he accepted an award from the John F Kennedy Library Foundation. “If any administration finds a way to remove Fed officials over policy differences, then future administrations will do so as well,” Powell said, in a barely veiled reference to the Trump administration’s attempt to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook. “The public would lose faith that the central bank will make decisions based only on what’s best for all Americans.” In his second term in power, Trump has frequently criticised and insulted Powell, alleging he was too slow to lower interest rates. Trump’s Justice Department went so far as to pursue criminal charges against the Fed chair over a building renovation project. The probe was eventually dropped to smooth the path towards Powell’s …

A yoga therapist recommends these five chair poses for seniors who want to improve their flexibility

Regular yoga classes generally involve floor-based postures, but if getting down on to and up from the floor is uncomfortable, it doesn’t mean you can’t practice yoga. Michelle A. Thielen, a yoga therapist and founder of faith-based teacher training school YogaFaith, has shared a yoga routine specifically designed to be done seated. This routine takes a few popular yoga postures and modifies them for the chair. Latest Videos From You may like “Practice with a sturdy, armless and wheelless chair,” Thielen advises. “Be sure all parts of the chair are on a non-slip floor. Placing the chair on a sticky yoga mat is best unless you are practicing on carpet. Feel free to keep non-slip tennis shoes on as you practice.” Make sure you feel comfortable and supported while seated so place a block under your feet if your feet don’t touch the floor. You can also sit on a cushion or the edge of a folded blanket to elevate your hips. While we’ve included suggestions for how long to hold or repeat poses, Thielen …

Trump swears Kevin Warsh in as Fed chair, seeking interest rate cuts

President Donald Trump led a ceremony swearing in Kevin Warsh as chair of the Federal Reserve, putting him in charge of a central bank that must navigate a tumultuous economy and a president with very specific expectations on interest rates. Trump, whose actions toward the Fed have spurred bipartisan alarms about executive influence on the historically independent central bank, said he wanted Warsh to “just do your own thing and do a great job.” “I want Kevin to be totally independent,” Trump said at the start of the event Friday morning. “Don’t look at me, don’t look at anybody.” But the swearing-in ceremony itself highlighted the the president’s unprecedented involvement with the Fed during his second term: Warsh is the first Fed chair to be sworn in at the White House since Alan Greenspan in 1987. The event in the East Room was attended by a range of high-profile figures, including Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh, House Speaker Mike Johnson and many other politicians and Cabinet officials. Thomas delivered the oath to …

Hyoung Chang | Denver Post | Getty Images The Democratic National Committee on Thursday released the long-awaited autopsy of its 2024 election wipeout, only for party Chair Ken Martin to eviscerate the incomplete report as an inadequate work product. The report, released in full along with annotations highlighting perceived shortcomings, has some sections left entirely blank, including the executive summary and conclusion. A disclaimer sits at the top of each page saying: “This document reflects the views of the author, not the DNC.” DNC Chair Ken Martin wrote a Substack post accompanying the report, where he addressed simmering frustration over the party’s decision to shelve the report. He said he did so because the report “wasn’t ready for primetime. Not even close,” and its release would “create a distraction.” Martin apologized that his decision to hold the report “ended up creating an even bigger distraction,” and slammed the …

DNC releases 2024 autopsy, with chair apologizing for ‘creating an even bigger distraction’

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin on Thursday released the party’s autopsy report on the 2024 election after facing intense pressure to do so. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The report details problems that plagued the Democratic Party in the last presidential election, including messaging that “created tensions with key constituencies” on the economy, late-arriving efforts to organize voters on the ground, a lack of alignment between the party’s main super PAC and then-Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, and more. Meanwhile, the autopsy itself has already caused strains within the party. Martin had been pummeled in public for months after he promised to release the report and then reversed course in December, saying he would not do so. Exclusive-US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Warns of China Role in Argentina Contract Bid

By Leila Miller and Maximilian Heath BUENOS AIRES, May 21 (Reuters) – U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Brian Mast has warned U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio of “Chinese malign influence” in a bid for a major contract in Argentina, according to a letter seen by Reuters. The April 23 letter concerns an auction for a 25-year contract to dredge and operate Argentina’s Parana River, a vital waterway for ‌most of the country’s agricultural exports, that Argentina ‌estimates will reach $10 billion in investment. The terms of the tender, which is in its final phase with a decision expected in the coming days, explicitly barred state-owned companies, preventing bids from Chinese firms. But Mast alleged that China was attempting “to circumvent that choice through a private sector proxy.” There is “serious concern” that Jan De Nul, a Belgian dredging company vying for the contract, “maintains deep and ongoing links to PRC state-owned entities” through Servimagnus, an Argentine firm that’s part of Jan De Nul’s consortium, the letter claimed.     Jan De Nul has managed …
