The start of June means one thing in the British tennis calendar – the Queen’s Club Championships. The annual Wimbledon warm-up in West Kensington returns to our screens and brings with it some of the world’s best players. June 1 (Reuters) – American great Serena Williams on Monday announced her ⁠long-anticipated ⁠return to competitive tennis following a prolonged ⁠absence at this month’s Queen’s Club Championships, as the 44-year-old reignited memories of ​her dominance over two decades. Williams, who won the last of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles in 2017 and has not competed ‌since the 2022 U.S. Open, received ‌a wildcard entry into the doubles draw, the London-based club said in a statement. Much like the Olympics, it features two days of competition in each of the four disciplines: women’s, men’s, pairs and ice dance. It’s the last major event of the 2025-2026 figure skating season, offering athletes one more shot at a title and, in some cases, post-Olympics redemption. March 16 : Former Olympic long jump silver medallist Luvo Manyonga will end a seven-year international hiatus after being selected in the South African delegation to compete in the World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland this month. Manyonga, 35, won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and is regarded as one of South Africa’s most gifted athletes, but has received two doping bans in his career.  He has admitted to recreational drug addiction and in December 2024 completed a four-year ban for failing to provide anti-doping officials with sufficient information to complete drug testing.  He remains determined to put himself in the frame for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, however, and this year has jumped a best of 8.11 meters, placing him 17th in the world. “I think I have another Olympics in me because in those four years I was out, it was like a car was parked, not being used,” he told South Africa’s Eyewitness News last year. March 8 : U.S. Olympic champion Alysa Liu has withdrawn from the upcoming World Figure Skating Championships, the 20-year-old said on social media on Sunday. Liu became the first American woman since 2002 to capture Olympic gold in women’s singles at the recent Milano Cortina Games. The championships are scheduled in Prague from March 24-29. “As some of yall already know, I withdrew from Worlds,” Liu wrote on Instagram.  “There’s been a lot of exciting things happening since my return from Milan, so I’m taking some time for that … see yall next season,” she added, without explaining further. Liu had been expected to defend her crown after winning the 2025 world title in Boston, becoming the first American since 2006 to claim the championship. That victory also marked a remarkable comeback, following her brief retirement after the 2022 Beijing Games.
