Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube Return for Sequel

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back on the beat with 24 Jump Street. The latest sequel in the comedy film franchise is in the works at Sony Pictures, with Hill, Tatum and Ice Cube in talks to return, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Rodney Rothman will direct the movie from a script he wrote with Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who helmed 2012’s 21 Jump Street and its 2014 sequel, will return as producers alongside Neal H. Moritz. No plot details have been shared, and it is unclear why the number 23 was skipped over for the current film’s title. Lord and Miller, who helmed this year’s Ryan Gosling-led Amazon MGM Studios hit Project Hail Mary, marked their feature directorial debuts with 21 Jump Street, which had a script from Hill and Michael Bacall. It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly five decades since the musical film Grease, an adaptation of the 1971 stage musical of the same name, dominated the box office and became a cultural phenomenon. The timeless love story made stars of its leads, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, although both had made significant strides in the industry by that point (Olivia had three Grammys to her name by then, John had appeared in films like Carrie). One of the project’s biggest breakouts, though, turned out to be Stockard Channing. By that point, Stockard had appeared on stage several times and co-starred with Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson in 1975’s The Fortune, although none of those made a significant impact. To be part of Magic Mike Live, the male dancers go through an extensive interview process that begins with the question: “What’s your relationship like with your mother?” Created and directed by Channing Tatum, the show is meant to offer a more empowering and feminist take on male strip shows. After launching residencies in Las Vegas and London, the show is now set to come to New York City starting in October in a newly renovated space in the midtown theater district.   “You are going to see naked men dancing. That’s just what’s going to happen, and hopefully they’ll be on top of you at some point. But there’s also so much more that’s embedded into the show,” Tatum said Tuesday to a crowd of hard-hat wearing media in the gutted venue space.
