Anxiety about AI in the United States appears to be getting worse. Prosaic concerns about machines disrupting industries, stealing jobs, and compromising schoolwork are giving way to more harrowing fears about the end of humanity. Even after top AI executives in the U.S. called for slowing down the breakneck pace of development, President Trump dismissed these safety concerns as a “hoax” that would hand China an advantage in the race for AI supremacy. Outside of China, Trump’s assertion may appear well founded. While the U.S. roils over the prospects of AI, China’s leadership looks to be charging ahead. In surveys, Chinese people appear more enthusiastic about AI and its potential benefits than respondents in the U.S., and they are adopting it more quickly. WASHINGTON (AP) — The first state visit by the leader of China in more than a decade takes place next week when President Xi Jinping arrives in Washington for high-stakes talks — and a little schmoozing — at the White House with President Donald Trump. When Xi’s plan lands at Joint Base Andrews just outside Washington on Wednesday, Trump will be there to welcome Xi for the state visit, senior administration officials told reporters. That’s unusual — Trump typically meets foreign leaders at the White House. The heart of the visit comes Thursday when Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcome Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan at an arrival ceremony held indoors on the State Floor of the White House. Trump and Xi will also participate in a review of troops in the Rose Garden before they retreat behind closed doors for their talks. Photo: China News Service China’s clean energy machine is now moving so fast that it’s meeting soaring electricity demand and pushing coal power backward at the same time. Coal generation has stopped growing in 17 of the 26 Chinese provinces and regions analyzed in a new report from energy think tank Ember. Those regions include industrial heavyweights such as Shandong and Hunan, and together they account for more than half of China’s thermal power capacity. Thermal generation – most of it coal – fell 0.7% in 2025, even as electricity demand jumped 5%. China’s thermal generation fell in 2015, when electricity demand barely moved, rising just 0.5%. That’s a very different story from what happened last year: Clean electricity grew fast enough to cover rising demand and start replacing coal. In contrast, Chinese authorities took five days to disclose that the 261 foreigners missing in Tibet come from 23 countries. Twelve days on, very little is known about the victims in Tibet as Chinese authorities have restricted reporting on the floods. BEIJING: China’s top court issued guidelines on Monday (Sep 7) covering a range of emerging pitfalls associated with artificial intelligence, including unauthorised deepfakes and voice cloning, state media reported. The move provides judicial guidance for AI-related disputes in China, which is currently engaged in an intense competition with the United States for dominance in the key technology. The guidelines released by the Supreme People’s Court “make clear that people cannot use AI to create or distribute recognisable digital replicas of others without their consent, including cloned faces and voices”, state news agency Xinhua reported. Other disputes targeted include “algorithmic price discrimination and AI-generated false information”, Xinhua said. Recent years have seen widespread adoption of AI technologies that allow individual users to easily create content that convincingly replicates the appearance and voices of real humans. Aviation researcher Andreas Rupprecht posted footage on LinkedIn that appears to show China’s next-generation high-altitude intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance drone, an aircraft he estimates is “comparable in size to the US Air Force’s B-21 Raider.” Rupprecht wrote on LinkedIn that the WZ-X drone was spotted at a secretive air base in China’s Xinjiang region, known to some as China’s version of Area 51: Two new images of the PLAAF’s latest and largest intercontinental HALE ISR #UAV, provisionally referred to simply as the #WZ-X, have been leaked, apparently showing the aircraft somewhere in Xinjiang. The UAV was first spotted on satellite imagery in May 2025 at the PLAAF’s UAV test centre at Malan Air Base in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of northwestern China. New reports emerged late Tuesday during the US cash session that the US military had struck targets inside Iran. If confirmed, the operation would mark a rare instance of US strikes occurring during regular market hours. Market(ing) tactics aside, the now six-month military campaign against Iran has also exposed a critical operational vulnerability: the US military is facing an alarming shortage of advanced missiles and interceptors. However, the crisis extends well beyond procuring replacement missiles from major defense firms. The deeper vulnerability lies farther upstream, where the rare earths and critical materials required for guidance systems, seekers, propulsion components, warheads, and interceptors remain scarce and heavily concentrated in China, even as Beijing increasingly weaponizes export controls of metals against the West.  On Monday, the Department of War said it had secured seven-year agreements with General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems and Lockheed Martin to rapidly expand US missile-production capacity and replenish depleted inventories.
