Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemns ‘extremely vile’ attack that did not lead to spike in radiation. Published On 7 Jun 20267 Jun 2026 Russian forces have targeted a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near Ukraine’s Chornobyl power plant, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The attack on Sunday significantly damaged a fuel-reception building metres away from where “large amounts of nuclear material” is stored, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which said it had been briefed by Ukraine. In February 2025, Russia allegedly used a Shahed drone to damage a containment arch over the Chornobyl reactor that was destroyed in the ‌April 1986 explosion and meltdown. US to Give $100 Million to Repair Damaged Chornobyl Nuclear Shelter, Kyiv Says

KYIV, April 29 (Reuters) – The U.S. will give $100 million towards repairs of the vast radiation containment ‌dome at the ‌Chornobyl plant in northern Ukraine, site of the world’s worst atomic accident in 1986, after the dome was damaged by a Russian drone, Kyiv’s energy minister, Denys Shmyhal, said on Wednesday. One of Chornobyl’s four reactors exploded in 1986 and is now enclosed by a shelter to contain the lingering radiation. A Russian drone hit that structure in February last year. In a post on Telegram, Shmyhal said funding for repairs of the dome, at an estimated cost of 500 million euros ($584.95 million), was discussed with international partners at a recent conference about the plant. ‘Nature has performed a factory reset’: Chernobyl has flourished into an unlikely wildlife refuge

‘Nature has performed a factory reset’: Chernobyl has flourished into an unlikely wildlife refuge

On contaminated land that is too dangerous for human life, the world’s wildest horses roam free. Across the Chernobyl exclusion zone, Przewalski’s horses – stocky, sand-coloured and almost toy-like in appearance – graze in a radioactive landscape larger than Luxembourg. Forty years ago, on 26 April 1986, an explosion at the nuclear power plant in Ukraine sent radiation across Europe and forced the evacuation of entire towns, displacing tens of thousands. It was the worst nuclear disaster in history. Four decades on, Chernobyl – which is transliterated as ‘Chornobyl’ in Ukraine – remains too dangerous for humans. But the wildlife has moved back in. Wolves now prowl the vast no-man’s-land spanning Ukraine and Belarus, and brown bears have returned after more than a century. Populations of lynx, moose, red deer and even free-roaming packs of dogs have rebounded. Chornobyl at 40: Settlers and horses survive Russian drones, contamination | Russia-Ukraine war News

Oslyak had just finished a night shift at ChNPP on April 25, and had returned to Pripyat and their cosy apartment, with its wall rugs and soft lighting typical of functional Soviet style.  He slipped into bed next to Nikitina and fell into a deep sleep. At 1:23am, explosions rang out across the night sky. The city stirred in the night, and some residents woke to the blasts and an unfamiliar light on the horizon, but Nikitina and her husband remained asleep. In the plant, molten fuel burned through layers of concrete and steel towards water beneath the reactor, threatening an even greater explosion. Firefighters and workers responded, unaware of the danger, climbing onto the roof and into the wreckage as radiation surged beyond levels that humans can handle. Two Chornobyl plant workers died that night as a result of the initial explosion, and a further 28 personnel and emergency workers called to the site would die in the following weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning. But in Pripyat, as Nikitina woke on …

G7 to Discuss Repair Works for Chornobyl Nuclear Plant, France Says

VAUX-DE-CERNAY, France, March 26 (Reuters) – The foreign ministers of the G7 group of nations will discuss repair ‌works worth about ‌500 million euros ($576.30 million) for the protective shield of Ukraine’s Chornobyl nuclear plant, France’s foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Thursday. “The G7 must play a leading role in this fundraising, in close coordination with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD),” Barrot told reporters on the sidelines of a G7 meeting taking place in France. The EBRD president Odile Renaud-Basso is due to attend the second day of the G7 event on Friday. Drone damages have prevented Chornobyl’s protective shield from performing its main safety function, the United Nations nuclear watchdog said last year.  (Reporting by John Irish and Gianluca Lo Nostro; Editing by Sudip Kar-Gupta) Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters.
