Keir Starmer’s top replacement chosen by public as PM hits ‘rock bottom’ | Politics | News

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham is the most “acceptable” successor to Sir Keir Starmer, new polling reveals. He is the only potential Labour leadership contender with a net positive acceptability rating among the public (+20). This contrasts sharply with ratings for Labour heavyweights such as Angela Rayner (-17), Health Secretary Wes Streeting (-8), Energy Security Secretary Ed Miliband (-16) and Chancellor Rachel Reeves (-31). Pollsters Opinium said Mr Burnham was the “clear favourite among the public to replace Keir Starmer if he were to stand down”. When voters were asked the separate questions of whom they would like to replace Sir Keir, Mr Burnham once again topped the poll as the choice of 18%. He came ahead of Ms Rayner (5%) and Mr Miliband (4%). However, more than one in five (22%) voters chose none of the candidates, while a third (33%) did not know who they wanted. Mr Burnham was ranked highest as the politician who “most understands the concerns of people like me” (16%), “is most in touch with ordinary people” (18%), …

Next James Bond: Has the New 007 Been Chosen?

GQ‘s power ranking of the prime candidates to be the next James Bond is updated regularly—and will be until an official announcement is made. Four and half years after Daniel Craig took his final bow as the iconic secret agent James Bond, his successor has yet to be chosen. As the franchise retools under new corporate ownership and a new director, the question remains: who will be the next James Bond? Over the years, the rumor mill has briefly fixed on one name after another, including Idris Elba, James Norton, Theo James, Harris Dickinson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Callum Turner. Elba has long since taken himself out of the running, saying the role isn’t one of his career goals, while acknowledging that it would “satisfy the will of a nation” if he took the part. Taylor-Johnson has also been described in the past as a leading candidate, with some outlets reporting in 2024 that the 28 Years Later star and Omega ambassador had been formally offered the role. But as months and then years passed without …

New Acting Lt. Gov. Chosen in Hawaii as Luke Takes Leave of Absence

New Acting Lt. Gov. Chosen in Hawaii as Luke Takes Leave of Absence

Sylvia Luke, the embattled lieutenant governor of Hawaiʻi, said Thursday she will take an indefinite leave of absence without pay. “This decision is not made lightly,” she said in a press release. “Serving the people of Hawai‘i has been the honor of my professional life, and I remain deeply committed to the responsibilities entrusted to me.” She added, “I understand that allegations which have been made against me are concerning. I ask for the public’s understanding and to allow this process to move forward appropriately.” The announcement came just hours after Luke met with Gov. Josh Green at the State Capitol. On Wednesday, Luke’s attorney confirmed the Hawaiʻi attorney general’s Special Investigations and Prosecution Division considers Luke a target in an investigation of $35,000 given to an influential state lawmaker in 2022. Thursday’s press release said Luke would not give any interviews. In a written statement, Green said he asked Luke to take leave “until the investigation is resolved, so government can remain focused on serving the people of Hawaii.” Later Thursday, the governor designated …

French captains chosen in historic first for Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race

French captains chosen in historic first for Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race

Next month’s edition of the annual men’s Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge universities will feature French captains for the first time in the rowing event’s long history. When the two boats take to the River Thames in London on April 4, three-time defending champion Noam Mouelle will lead the Light Blues of Cambridge against the Dark Blues of Oxford captained by Tobias Bernard, a Londoner born to a French father and a Franco-American mother. “As Noam said, it’s a fun fact, it’s amusing,” 23-year-old Bernard, who studies chemistry at Oxford, said on the sidelines of the team announcements. Mouelle, 24, said the nationality of the two captains meant little in an event that was first run in 1829. “The cool thing is that it shows that no matter where you come from or what you did before, as long as you commit 100 percent to the project, the training programmes and the club’s culture, it doesn’t change anything,” he said. Mouelle, a physics PhD student at Cambridge, took his first strokes aged nine at …

11 Things A Woman Does Differently When She Finally Feels Chosen In A Relationship

It can be hard to find an honest, healthy relationship, especially in a dating culture where mixed signals and emotional games are the norm. ‘My mum wouldn’t have chosen that end – she knew exactly what was going to happen’ | UK News

When Ed Rumley sat down with Sky News three months ago, she knew she only had weeks to live. The 82-year-old former magistrate had just been diagnosed with an aggressive, inoperable brain tumour. She wanted to add her voice to support for the assisted dying bill making its way through parliament, even though she knew it would come too late for her. She feared the loss of dignity and identity as she deteriorated. “I feel that it should be me who says, ‘Well, I think I’ll get off this bus now. I’ve reached where I want to go to, and I’m quite happy, I’ve had a good life’.” Image: Ed teared up during her Sky News interview Forty-nine days after we spoke, Ed died. Her son Stephen was with her in those final days. It was, he said, exactly the sort of harrowing and difficult death his mother dreaded. “She wouldn’t have chosen that end. She knew exactly what was going to happen to her,” he told Sky News. “Mum lived her life with dignity. …

How the Olympic Torchbearers Are Chosen

How the Olympic Torchbearers Are Chosen

After being lit on November 26 in Olympia, Greece, the Olympic flame is now officially on its way to Olympic cauldrons in Milan and Cortina. But who are the people carrying the torches? Why do we make such a big deal out of torchbearers anyway? Also, how did the dudes from Heated Rivalry end up carrying the flame? Well, that’s a little complicated. Traditionally, the organizers for an Olympic host city choose each Games’ torchbearers. Sometimes they are selected for their athletic achievements, sometimes for their celebrity. (Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams from the gay hockey show likely fall into the latter category.) You can also just apply to be a torchbearer, and citizens who have distinguished themselves through commitment, solidarity, or significant work are often selected. Prior to each Games, the flame is lit in the historic city of Olympia, Greece, and taken along a route that passes through different cities, communities, and territories on its way to the host country. Each torchbearer walks a short distance along that route, contributing to a long …

BEACH HOLIDAYS Switch off on a Greek island Astypalaia has the same pretty, white-washed houses you see on the famous Greek islands, but it’s far less busy. The main town is beautiful, with buildings leading up a hill to an old castle. We rented a small apartment and spent our days on quiet pebble beaches that we had almost to ourselves. It’s a genuinely peaceful place where you can properly switch off from the noise of modern life. Roy A Corsican beach that never gets busy Plage de Péru. Photograph: Jon Ingall/Alamy Our favourite beach in Europe is Plage de Péru on Corsica. It can be reached by a pleasant downhill walk from the village of Cargèse, established by descendants of Greek immigrants from the Mani peninsula in the 18th century. However, we were lucky enough to have direct access from the Hotel Thalassa, a sleepy hotel with balconies and a leafy garden facing the turquoise waters. There may be better beaches on Corsica but this one is perfect for swimming and never seems to get busy. …
