ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet: No one is coming for us

ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet: No one is coming for us

Every time you use AI, you are, in some small way, depending on a 42-year-old, 44,000-person Dutch company that spends €4.5 billion each year to advance its technology. ASML, headquartered in the Netherlands, makes the machines that make the chips that make AI possible. More specifically, it makes the only machines in the world capable of printing the microscopic patterns on silicon wafers that define the most advanced semiconductors — a process called extreme ultraviolet lithography, or EUV. The machines are roughly the size of a school bus, take months to assemble, involve hundreds of suppliers, and cost anywhere from $200 million to upwards of $400 million apiece depending on the generation (prices that give even ASML’s biggest customers pause occasionally). That monopoly has made ASML the most valuable company in Europe, worth over $530 billion. And with the four largest American tech companies — Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Google — committing more than $600 billion in AI infrastructure spending this year alone, demand for ASML’s machines has surged to the point where the company …

Middle East war having ‘huge impact’ on EU economy: Commissioner Christophe Hansen – Talking Europe

Middle East war having ‘huge impact’ on EU economy: Commissioner Christophe Hansen – Talking Europe

It’s no secret that farmers across the EU have grown increasingly frustrated with the state of their industry. Profitability is falling, competition from abroad is fierce, and worries about paperwork and bureaucracy continue to mount. Fewer young people are taking over the family farm, opting for other careers instead. On top of these long-standing challenges, the war in Iran is adding new pressures, particularly with rising fertiliser costs. We sat down to discuss these issues with the EU’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen. “The war going on in the Middle East is having a huge impact on our economy,” Hansen tells us. “We have trade flows going through these lanes. We are dependent on imports from there when it comes to oil and LNG (liquefied natural gas). But also, fertilisers are going through the affected region. Production sites (for fertilisers) are halted. So, this is creating problems for the agricultural sector. And generally speaking, our economy will have issues to cope with the situation.”  For Hansen, the war highlights the EU’s vulnerability when it comes to …

Christophe Vasseur, baker and restaurateur

Christophe Vasseur presenting one of his mosaic pizzas. LUCAS LEHMANN FOR M LE MAGAZINE DU MONDE Christophe Vasseur is always on the move – literally. On Rue Yves-Toudic in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, the baker, wearing a crew-neck T-shirt, apron and a smile on his face, bustled back and forth in front of the large carriage entrance at number 34. To the left stands Du Pain et des Idées, his corner bakery, with Art Nouveau woodwork and glass-painted ceilings, listed as a historic monument. This Parisian bread temple has drawn people from all over the world for more than 20 years. To the right, behind two large picture windows, is La Table, his new eatery opened in the fall. The space comes alive from dawn with coffee (from the Coutume coffee shops) and pastries, but truly takes on its full character at lunch and dinner. At sunset, just minutes before the evening service, the owner still moved briskly from one spot to another, arms filled with trays and utensils, radiating a joyful energy. He …
