NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs Get Into Micro-comedy, Really

The vertical video gold rush has pulled in one of the biggest players in traditional media — the NFL. Or at least, one of its marquee franchises. The Kansas City Chiefs are diving into the micro-series realm with a comedy called El Offseason. The Spanish-language show will follow the misadventures of four (fictional) team employees whose offseason months spiral into chaos. The team says the nine-episode series will combine elements of sketch comedy with the wild plot twists of a telenovela. El Offseason is set to premiere June 12 in the United States, Mexico and Spain. As part of the NFL’s global markets program, the Chiefs have marketing rights in the latter two countries (along with several other franchises), hence the Spanish-language effort. A trailer for the series is below. “This is exactly the kind of storytelling opportunity the offseason creates,” said Lauren Denowitz, vp brand marketing and fan engagement for the team. “When the games stop, the connection matters even more. El Offseason lets us show up for our fans in a way that feels …

‘Doo Doo Water and a Few Needles’: Inside the Mystery of the New York City Manhole Prowlers

‘Doo Doo Water and a Few Needles’: Inside the Mystery of the New York City Manhole Prowlers

In recent days, a fantastical question has captured the attention of New Yorkers and local tabloids: Who is popping in and out of manholes across the city, and what are they doing in the sewer system? On May 5, security footage showed three people wearing hip waders entering a manhole in Queens. Then, in the early morning hours of May 29, another camera captured a group of people exiting a manhole in Brooklyn. The same day, a different group was seen emerging from another Brooklyn manhole, miles away from the first location. Some wore headlamps, and some were carrying what appeared to be shovels and flashlights. The New York Police Department has speculated that the men are scavengers looking for jewelery, guns, or other valuables. But no one knows for sure, so WIRED consulted with several urban exploration content creators active in New York City. On platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, “urbex” creators—typically teenage boys or young men who film together in small groups—explore abandoned or difficult-to-access spaces like defunct factories, dilapidated mansions, and …

Alpha School’s Ritzy New York City Campus Costs ,000 a Year—but Isn’t Actually a School

Alpha School’s Ritzy New York City Campus Costs $65,000 a Year—but Isn’t Actually a School

In the fall of 2025, top executives from Alpha School gathered a group of wealthy New York City parents at a series of information sessions in Lower Manhattan to pitch them on the company’s new campus. The events, some of which were hosted by Alpha cofounder MacKenzie Price and its billionaire principal, Joe Liemandt, were designed to show how Alpha was “redefining school” through AI-powered learning models. The goal: persuade families to ditch the city’s traditional education system and join what Alpha initially called “the most forward-thinking private school in New York.” The pitch seems to have worked. This school year, more than a dozen families have been sending their children to the sixth and seventh floors of the skyscraper at 180 Maiden Lane. According to the current Alpha New York web page, the “school day” runs from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm, and the stated “tuition” is $65,000 a year. (Founding families received a discount.) As Price told the Free Press in May, “Alpha is a product as a school that is catering to …

Qeshm: Iran’s fortress island with an underground ‘missile city’ threatening US troops in Hormuz

Qeshm: Iran’s fortress island with an underground ‘missile city’ threatening US troops in Hormuz

The US military launched fresh strikes on a fortified Iranian island near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday as diplomacy slowed and Iran restarted attacks on its neighbours. US Central Command said the military attacked a ground control tower on Qeshm Island in “self-defence”, claiming Iran had tried and failed to attack Kuwait and Bahrain with missiles. Residents reported hearing early morning explosions on the 558sq mile stretch off the mainland, which has been used throughout the conflict to attack ships passing through the closed waterway. At the height of the war, Qeshm was briefed as a possible target for a US ground offensive as Washington looked at ways to break Tehran’s hold on the Strait of Hormuz. The island in the Strait of Hormuz allows Iran to project power across the Gulf (NASA) In peacetime, the island is a tourist destination dotted with salt caves and the remnants of fortifications installed by European empires. The Royal Indian Navy operated out of the island until 1863, and the last coaling station for the navy was …

Amazon Employees Show Up to City Council Meeting to Demand Limits on Data Centers

Amazon Employees Show Up to City Council Meeting to Demand Limits on Data Centers

Two Amazon employees on Wednesday publicly called for regulations on new data centers, telling elected officials in Seattle that unchecked development of the sharply disputed nerve centers of AI threatens the region’s environment, economy, and safety. “Local governments, in collaboration with community stakeholders, should be setting the terms for data center buildout,” Amazon senior software engineer Liesl Wigand said at a city hearing. “Let’s not let Big Tech burn Seattle to win the AI race.” The comments by Wigand and another Amazon software engineer, Patrick Schloesser, mark a significant escalation in the protest movement across the US against the rapid construction of data centers over the past couple of years. While workers at several big tech companies, including Amazon, have complained about the negative effects of data centers and the need for greater oversight, none are believed to have done so as publicly and explicitly before, according to labor organizers supporting the effort in Seattle. Schloesser, who has been at Amazon for nearly six years, said that data centers should have to supply more renewable …
