Mexico’s Sheinbaum seeks ‘irrefutable’ evidence for US charges against Sinaloa governor

Mexico is seeking “irrefutable” evidence to back up the shock US drug trafficking charges against a sitting governor and other officials before proceeding with extradition requests, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday. The US Justice Department unveiled charges on Wednesday against Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and nine others, accusing them of working with the notorious Sinaloa cartel to distribute “massive quantities” of narcotics to the United States. Rocha Moya, a member of the Sheinbaum’s left-leaning Morena party and close ally of her predecessor, has governed the violent state since 2021. The 76-year-old has a long history in public life that included stints as a state lawmaker in the 1980s, the head of the University of Sinaloa in the 1990s, the advisor of two governors in the 2000s and then a state leader for Morena. The deadly drug raid fuelling speculation about what the US is doing in Mexico

The deaths of two US officials in a counter-narcotics operation in northern Mexico have sparked uncertainty over the extent to which the Mexican government knew about Washington’s involvement. The two officials, reportedly CIA agents, died alongside two local Mexican investigators in a car crash in the early hours of Sunday morning in the state of Chihuahua. In the days following, authorities have given contradicting accounts of just how much Mexico‘s government knew about the US involvement in the operation, igniting tensions between Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and the White House. Here is what we know so far. What happened? The two US officials and two members of the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency were returning from an operation to destroy cartel drug labs in Chihuahua – which borders the US states of Texas and New Mexico – when their vehicle skidded off the side of a ravine and exploded, local officials said. The Associated Press, citing three sources it said were familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity, reported that the Americans, …

CIA agents killed in horror car crash on secret raid to destroy Mexico drug lab | World | News

Two U.S. officials killed in a vehicle crash as they returned from destroying a clandestine drug lab in northern Mexico over the weekend were working for the CIA, according to a U.S. official and two other people familiar with the matter. Two Mexican investigators also were killed in the crash, which Mexican authorities said occurred while the convoy was returning from an operation to destroy drug labs of criminal groups. There have been discrepancies in the public accounts of what happened from U.S. and Mexican officials, which experts say underscores heightened American involvement in security operations in Mexico and across the region. The CIA’s involvement was confirmed Tuesday by the three with knowledge of the crash, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters. That the U.S. officials worked for the CIA was reported earlier by The Washington Post. It comes after days of contradictions from Mexican and U.S. authorities about the role that American officials played in an operation to bust a narco-laboratory in northern Chihuahua state. The lack of …

US troops in Mexico ‘not on the table’, Sheinbaum tells Trump

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that she had discussed her country’s security and sovereignty with Donald Trump after the US president threatened ground attacks against drug cartels. She said she told Trump that any US troop deployment in Mexico was “not on the table”. “We spoke about various topics, including security with respect for our sovereignties, reducing drug trafficking, trade, and investments,” Sheinbaum said on social media. Trump again said last week that land attacks against drug cartels would follow recent US maritime operations in the Pacific and Caribbean, without specifying where or when. Mexico extradited dozens of cartel leaders to the United States in 2025 and reinforced border cooperation, but Sheinbaum has repeatedly voiced opposition to any military intervention from outside. And we are going to start now hitting land, with regard to the cartels,” Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity in an interview aired Thursday night. “The cartels are running Mexico, it’s very sad to watch and see what’s happened to that country,” Trump said. Trump’s comment comes less than a week after U.S. forces struck Venezuela and captured its authoritarian leader, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores. The Venezuelan government has …
