AI licensing coalition SPUR in huge expansion

AI licensing coalition SPUR in huge expansion

SPUR logo AI news licensing standards coalition SPUR has added almost 20 publisher members in a major international expansion of its work. SPUR (the Standards for Publisher Usage Rights coalition) was announced publicly in February by The Guardian, Financial Times, Telegraph, BBC and Sky News. They were later joined by Belgian-based Mediahuis as another founder member in a signal of their intent that it is not just a UK project. They said they wanted to develop shared industry standards on ways journalism can be used by AI companies and products creating common standards around permission and payment. SPUR said on Wednesday it has already made “significant progress” on its work towards the technical infrastructure that will allow publishers to see how AI systems are using their content and therefore better negotiate. This will be launched soon, the group said. The new arrivals include French press group CMA Media as another founder member (which means they pay higher membership fees and sit on the board). The first standard members include Canadian publishers The Globe and Mail, …

Danish PM Frederiksen secures third term with new coalition government

Danish PM Frederiksen secures third term with new coalition government

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Monday she had managed to form a left-leaning minority coalition government following months of talks after inconclusive elections in March. “A government was able to be formed, after long negotiations,” she told reporters after meeting with the country’s King Frederik X. A statement from the palace said the coalition would consist of Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, the Socialist People’s Party, the centre-left Radikale Venstre and the centrist Moderates. It marks a third term as premier for Frederiksen, 48, who in January stood up to US President Donald Trump against his threats to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Frederiksen said she would present her political programme on Tuesday, and on Wednesday the new cabinet. Neither the left nor the right bloc won a majority in the March 24 election, which left parliament splintered. The four parties in the new coalition between them hold 82 of the 179 seats in parliament. Media reported that a separate alliance of leftists and greens could support the coalition. Tribal coalition urges appeals court to reject Kalshi betting theory challenge in Tennessee

Tribal coalition urges appeals court to reject Kalshi betting theory challenge in Tennessee

A coalition of tribal organizations and federally recognized tribes is asking a federal appeals court to overturn a ruling that temporarily blocked Tennessee from enforcing its sports wagering laws against prediction market operator Kalshi. The filing, submitted Tuesday (May 26) to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, backs Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti and state officials in their challenge to a preliminary injunction granted to Kalshi. Tribal groups argue the company’s legal position would weaken tribal sovereignty, disrupt long-standing gaming regulations, and erode revenue that supports tribal governments. On the same day, the American Gaming Association also filed its own supporting brief. Why the tribal coalition …

Latvia’s PM-designate unveils new coalition government after drone crisis – POLITICO

Kulbergs himself would become prime minister, while the coalition also hands key portfolios to figures from across Latvia’s fragmented political spectrum, including former Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis as finance minister and National Alliance heavyweight Ilze Indriksone as education minister. Foreign Minister Baiba Braže is set to remain in office, while Colonel Raivis Melnis has been tapped for defense minister — a controversial move that would initially place an active-duty military officer in charge of the armed forces. Melnis has since pledged to leave the military before parliament votes on the cabinet. He praised Melnis’ direct experience working with Ukraine, particularly on drone warfare. “No one in the world right now is as prepared with defense solutions for what currently threatens us most — drones,” Kulbergs said. The new government comes following the collapse of the previous administration, led by center-right Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, earlier in May, after political backlash erupted over two stray Ukrainian drones that struck Latvian oil facilities. The incident intensified broader fears across the Baltics about drone spillover from the war …

Latvian centrist moves to form coalition government – POLITICO

Rinkevics on Monday green-lit the coalition. Kulbergs is expected to unveil his cabinet appointments on Tuesday, Latvian outlet Diena reported. Under the terms of the coalition deal, caretake prime minister Siliņa, who belongs to the New Unity party, aims to become defense minister. The Latvian parliament could vote on the new government later this week. Security and defense will be among the main priorities of the incoming coalition. Latvia, which shares a 283-kilometer border with Russia, is one of the most outspoken advocates for Ukraine and EU defense policy. The next government will also prioritize negotiations on the EU’s next seven-year budget. In particular, Tallinn is calling for robust funding for security, agriculture and regional development. Friday briefing: As Israel’s coalition collapses, can its prime minister hang on to power?

Friday briefing: As Israel’s coalition collapses, can its prime minister hang on to power?

Good morning. On Wednesday, Israeli legislators took the first steps towards dissolving parliament and calling fresh nationwide elections. Leading leftwing Knesset member Yair Golan hailed it “the beginning of the end of the worst government in Israel’s history.” Benjamin Netanyahu has spent 20 of the last 30 years as Israel’s prime minister, the last four of which have seen him helm a far-right coalition. Under the incumbent government, settlement building in the illegally occupied West Bank has accelerated, while many international humanitarian NGOs have been banned from the Palestinian territories. Following Hamas’s killing of 1,200 Israelis on 7 October 2023, Netanyahu has orchestrated a campaign of violence in Gaza, killing or injuring more than 10% of the population, and flattening the strip in what a UN commission has declared a genocide. Netanyahu remains on trial for three counts of corruption. Much has changed since Israeli voters last went to the polls. Public support for Israel in both western Europe and the US is at its lowest ever level. Israeli public opinion, meanwhile, has shifted further …

Danish deputy PM to lead coalition talks after Frederiksen’s effort fails – POLITICO

The king of Denmark late Friday charged Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, leader of the center-right Venstre party, with trying to form the next government after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen failed to build a new coalition. After a near deadlock in Denmark’s March 24 election, Frederiksen has been leading coalition negotiations in a bid to secure what would be her third term in office. Frederiksen’s Social Democrats secured the most votes in the parliamentary election, but the party fell far short of a majority in the Folketing, the Danish parliament. Denmark’s royal household issued a statement Friday night announcing that King Frederik X “has requested the Chairman of the Liberal Party, Troels Lund Poulsen, to lead negotiations on the formation of a government that does not involve the participation of the Social Democrats and the Moderates.” Frederiksen on Friday evening acknowledged the risk she might lose her post, telling the press: “The Danes gave the Social Democrats a worse election result and have composed the Folketing in such a way that a center-right government could well …

Surprise, “Democrats for Rob Coalition” chaired by GOP elected

Surprise, “Democrats for Rob Coalition” chaired by GOP elected

A frontline GOP congressman, Rep. Rob Bresnahan, R-Pa., launched the “Democrats for Rob Coalition” last month, billed as an invitation to Democrats living in Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District to vote for Republicans. The catch is that the main schtick of these “Democrats” seems to be supporting Republicans — and they have been for years. In April, Bresnahan announced the launch of the coalition and that it would be chaired by two local politicians, former Nanticoke mayor and current City Council President Joseph Dougherty and Jessup Borough Councilman Jeff Castellani. Bresnahan’s campaign manager, Peter Brath, claimed in the announcement that “Bresnahan has earned the support of local Democrat elected officials who know the needs and wants of Northeastern Pennsylvanians,” while his opponent, Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti, was busy “sucking up to far left special interest groups and out of touch elites in DC.” The problem is that it’s not clear that either of the coalition’s chairs is a Democrat. Dougherty, though he was elected as mayor on the Democratic Party line back in 2010, was on …

Romania’s pro-EU coalition government collapses after prime minister loses no-confidence vote

Romania’s pro-EU coalition government collapses after prime minister loses no-confidence vote

Romania’s parliament on Tuesday voted to oust liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in a motion of no confidence initiated by the Social Democrats and the far right, deepening political turmoil in the EU and NATO country bordering Ukraine. The move by the left wing Social Democrats (PSD), Romania’s biggest party, to join with the far right to file the motion drew criticism that they were legitimising a surging far right. The motion received 281 votes in the 464-seat parliament. Bolojan’s liberals (PNL) and his USR allies were present, but did not vote. The PSD quit the government last month and teamed up with the AUR, Romania’s main far-right party, for the motion. The AUR has passed the PSD in surveys since the last parliamentary elections, sitting at around 37 percent. Tracy Sturdivant, the Ms. Foundation’s Next Leader, Wants to Expand the Feminist Funder’s Coalition

Tracy Sturdivant, the Ms. Foundation’s Next Leader, Wants to Expand the Feminist Funder’s Coalition

NEW YORK (AP) — It is rare, the Ms. Foundation’s next leader acknowledged, for a Black woman to take the helm of a major nonprofit from another Black woman. It is even rarer, she noted, for that organization to be financially healthy. And yet that is the position Tracy Sturdivant will enter when she succeeds Teresa Younger as the president and CEO of the first national philanthropy run by and for women. The Ms. Foundation introduced Sturdivant on Tuesday at its annual New York City gala, where feminists such as #MeToo founder Tarana Burke were honored. The foundation is “not in crisis,” but “ready for what’s to come” with Sturdivant in charge, Younger said in a statement shared ahead of the announcement. The foundation built a $100 million-plus endowment and explicitly centered women and girls of color during her tenure. With that strong footing Sturdivant sees an opportunity to expand the coalition of people who see gender justice as their charge, too. As many funders disinvest from Black-led nonprofits, she is committed to “unapologetically” supporting …
