Potential Offshore Strike In Norway Could Add Fresh Uncertainty To Global Energy Markets As Wage Talks Collapse

Potential Offshore Strike In Norway Could Add Fresh Uncertainty To Global Energy Markets As Wage Talks Collapse

By Michael Kern of OilPrice.com A potential strike over wages could threaten smooth operations offshore Norway, Western Europe’s top oil and gas producer, at a time when the world is scrambling for oil and gas supply amid the Middle East crisis. Almost 8% of oil and gas workers offshore Norway could go on a strike from June 5 if trade union negotiations with industry fail to reach an agreement in a government-brokered mediation process, according to data from the labor unions on Monday. More than 600 workers out of about 8,100 in total offshore Norway could begin a strike later this week, Reuters reported on Monday, citing the office of the government-appointed mediator. Negotiations between the offshore industry and the workers organized in the Styrke, Lederne, and Safe trade unions continue. At the end of last week, talks between Offshore Norway, which represents the oil industry in the wage talks, and the unions broke down. Offshore Norway and the trade union Styrke held negotiations on May 27 on the onshore base agreements, which cover approximately …

A Trivia Champ, 2 Brothers and a Helpful Grandfather Were Among Victims of Washington Tank Collapse

A Trivia Champ, 2 Brothers and a Helpful Grandfather Were Among Victims of Washington Tank Collapse

Crews have recovered the remains of one more victim of a massive chemical tank rupture at a paper mill in Washington state, authorities said Friday, leaving two workers still unaccounted for. Among the 11 workers killed in the disaster were two brothers who worked there together, a trivia champ and an electrician who would help his farmer neighbors cut hay. A tank containing more than 500,000 gallons (1.9 million liters) of a mixture used to break down wood for making paper collapsed Tuesday morning at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. in Longview, a city of 40,000 along the Columbia River. The collapse expelled a flood of caustic chemicals powerful enough to blow out building walls and overturn pickup trucks at the site. The liquid, called white liquor, causes severe burns on contact and lung damage if vapors are inhaled. What happens during the recovery process The recovery of victims has been slow and methodical, complicated by the dangers posed by the remaining chemicals and other industrial hazards, said Matt Amos, Longview fire battalion chief. Renewed U.S. strikes put Iran talks on verge of collapse

Renewed U.S. strikes put Iran talks on verge of collapse

WASHINGTON — Precarious talks to end the war with Iran appeared close to collapse on Tuesday as renewed fighting across the region threatened to derail fragile progress toward a comprehensive settlement. U.S. strikes against targets in southern Iran — the first since a ceasefire was declared in the war seven weeks ago — coupled with escalating attacks by Israel in Lebanon have undermined optimism that an agreement was within reach. The attacks occurred just hours after U.S. and Iranian diplomats arrived in Qatar for peace talks. Iran’s top negotiators left Doha on Tuesday without comment. News of the strikes, and threats of retaliation by Tehran, sent global oil prices soaring back to more than $100 a barrel. U.S. Central Command described Monday’s actions as “self-defense strikes” that were restrained and modest in scope, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats “attempting to emplace mines” in the Strait of Hormuz. But the attack came as President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been projecting confidence that a framework agreement to end the war could be reached …

A Year After Glacier Collapse, Blatten Residents Rebuild Lives in Swiss Alps

A Year After Glacier Collapse, Blatten Residents Rebuild Lives in Swiss Alps

By Marleen Kaesebier, Denis Balibouse and Cecile Mantovani WILER, Switzerland, May 26 (Reuters) – Hotel Momentum stands above Switzerland’s Loetschen Valley as a symbol of recovery, a year after a collapsing glacier destroyed the village of Blatten. Built in just 105 days near the neighbouring town of Wiler, the wooden hotel is one of the clearest signs of how displaced residents are rebuilding their lives after the disaster. “The past is no longer, the future is not here yet, life is here and now,” a wooden sign reads in German at the reception – a message that has come to define ‌the outlook of many who lost their homes. From the hotel’s ‌windows, guests can look out across jagged ridges to where Blatten once stood — now a grey stretch of debris and a pool of turquoise water, with the tips of submerged houses still visible. The destruction followed days of warnings. Authorities evacuated the village’s 300-plus residents after rockfall destabilised the Birch glacier above. On May 28, 2025, a cascade of rock, soil and …

Iran’s small businesses collapse under war, inflation and internet blackout

Iran’s small businesses collapse under war, inflation and internet blackout

Even before the war, Iran’s economy had been spiralling for years under international sanctions tied to the regime’s nuclear activities, alongside deep corruption and chronic mismanagement, making daily life increasingly difficult for millions. Over the past decade, Iranians have staged several large local and nationwide protests triggered by economic grievances, including in 2019 and January 2026, leaving tens of thousands of protesters dead, arrested or injured. Since April 28, when the US and Israel attacked Iran and the Iranian regime shut down the internet, the economy has worsened sharply. Middle-class Iranians we spoke to said the situation was becoming unsustainable, and that they feared they may no longer be able to afford food in the coming months if the situation continues. In this message posted on X on April 28, 2026, an Iranian small business owner begs users to share her post so the business she has built for 10 years does not fail. After a complete collapse, where does Welsh Labour go from here?

After a complete collapse, where does Welsh Labour go from here?

May 7 will go down as the worst election in the history of Welsh Labour. More than a century of electoral dominance ended with the party sitting in opposition in the Senedd (Welsh parliament) for the first time. Given Welsh Labour’s once-hegemonic position, the scale of the defeat is astonishing. This was not simply a loss, but a collapse. The party now holds just nine seats in the Senedd, with few new figures emerging to shape its future direction. The unavoidable question is where Welsh Labour goes from here, and whether it can recover. The answer depends not simply on new policies or a change of leader, but on whether the party is capable of a genuine reckoning with both its ideological direction and the consequences of nearly three decades in government. That process will be difficult while Welsh Labour remains divided between its Westminster wing in London and its devolved leadership in Cardiff Bay. Adaptation and exhaustion No party in the democratic world has enjoyed such sustained dominance as Labour in Wales. As the …

Samsung Elec regrets collapse of pay talks with union, says to continue dialogue

SEOUL, May 13 : Samsung Electronics said on Wednesday it regretted the collapse of pay deal talks with its South Korean union, flagging concerns that it could heighten anxiety among employees, shareholders and the public. The company said it would continue efforts to prevent a worst-case scenario through what it described as “sincere dialogue” with the union. The union leader said earlier on Wednesday that it failed to reach a pay deal with the company, warning that more than 50,000 workers could go ahead with a full strike for 18 days from May 21 that threatens to disrupt production of AI and other chips.
