Building Under Construction in Philippines Collapses, Leaving 1 Dead and 21 Trapped

ANGELES, Philippines (AP) — A nine-story building under construction in a city north of the Philippine capital collapsed before dawn on Sunday, leaving at least one Malaysian tourist dead and at least 21 mostly workers trapped in the rubble, officials said. Two were located alive but could not be immediately extricated. At least 24 workers either managed to dash out of the building, where they mostly slept on the ground floor, or were rescued after the it crumbled to the ground around 2:30 a.m. in a crowded neighborhood of budget hotels, cafes, spas and rural houses outside a former U.S. Air Force base, officials said. A Malaysian tourist died and another guest was injured in a lodging house, which was partly hit by debris from the collapsing building in Angeles City in Pampanga province, Fire Superintendent Maria Lea Sajili said. Relatives of those trapped under concrete slabs, twisted iron bars and aluminum scaffoldings and other debris prayed and wept as they waited for word from about 700 rescuers gingerly scouring the rubble pail to create …

Friday briefing: As Israel’s coalition collapses, can its prime minister hang on to power?

Good morning. On Wednesday, Israeli legislators took the first steps towards dissolving parliament and calling fresh nationwide elections. Leading leftwing Knesset member Yair Golan hailed it “the beginning of the end of the worst government in Israel’s history.” Benjamin Netanyahu has spent 20 of the last 30 years as Israel’s prime minister, the last four of which have seen him helm a far-right coalition. Under the incumbent government, settlement building in the illegally occupied West Bank has accelerated, while many international humanitarian NGOs have been banned from the Palestinian territories. Following Hamas’s killing of 1,200 Israelis on 7 October 2023, Netanyahu has orchestrated a campaign of violence in Gaza, killing or injuring more than 10% of the population, and flattening the strip in what a UN commission has declared a genocide. Netanyahu remains on trial for three counts of corruption. Much has changed since Israeli voters last went to the polls. Public support for Israel in both western Europe and the US is at its lowest ever level. Israeli public opinion, meanwhile, has shifted further …

Beloved London Italian chain closes all its branches after decades as it collapses into administration

A beloved Italian restaurant chain is set to close its doors after 70 years as it collapses into administration. Spaghetti House has served London diners since the 1950s and claims to be the oldest family-run Italian in the capital. However, it has now closed all its restaurants with immediate effect after the business went under. Owner Lavval Restaurants Ltd was placed in administration on May 6 and BTG Begbies Traynor LLP was appointed the administrator. The first Spaghetti House was founded by Simone Lavarini and Lorenzo Fraquelli on Goodge Street in 1955 and closed last year. A spokesperson for the chain said: “We’re sorry all our restaurants are now closed. “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our loyal customers, partners and team members, past and present, for your support over the years. “From our family to yours, Grazie.” In 1975, the so-called Spaghetti House siege …

Major blackout in Cuba as power grid collapses : NPR

People look at a barricade set up by residents protesting against prolonged power outages in Havana, Cuba, Wednesday. Ramon Espinosa/AP hide caption toggle caption Ramon Espinosa/AP HAVANA — Cuba’s national energy grid suffered a major failure early Thursday that severed power to the island’s eastern provinces, authorities said, as residents in the capital Havana faced ongoing blackouts. Cuba’s aging power grid has eroded in recent years as it faces a prolonged economic crisis, recently made worse by a U.S. energy blockade of the island, where daily life can be an ordeal for many of the country’s 10 million people. The state-run Electric Union said the collapse had stripped power from all eastern provinces from Guantánamo to Ciego de Ávila, and that crews were working to restore power, but it did not give an estimate for how long it would take. The previous day, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel had described the energy situation as “tense” after supplies of oil delivered by a Russian vessel in late March ran out. Cuba produces barely 40% of the fuel …

Romania’s pro-EU coalition government collapses after prime minister loses no-confidence vote

Romania’s parliament on Tuesday voted to oust liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in a motion of no confidence initiated by the Social Democrats and the far right, deepening political turmoil in the EU and NATO country bordering Ukraine. The move by the left wing Social Democrats (PSD), Romania’s biggest party, to join with the far right to file the motion drew criticism that they were legitimising a surging far right. The motion received 281 votes in the 464-seat parliament. Bolojan’s liberals (PNL) and his USR allies were present, but did not vote. The PSD quit the government last month and teamed up with the AUR, Romania’s main far-right party, for the motion. The AUR has passed the PSD in surveys since the last parliamentary elections, sitting at around 37 percent.
