Singapore orders social media sites to block content, likely from China-based platform, targeting Indian community

MALICIOUS EFFORTS TO SOW DISCORD MHA said that it has observed deliberate attempts to spread more of such content in Singapore’s local information space. These are malicious efforts to sow discord by inciting ill will against the Indian community in the country, said the ministry. “This includes Indian migrant workers in sectors such as construction who are here to make an honest living,” it said. “They contribute to Singapore’s growth and development, and are valued members of our society.” The problematic content likely breaches Section 298A of the Penal Code for knowingly promoting feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different groups on grounds of race, or committing an act prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between different racial groups in Singapore, said the ministry. The offence carries a punishment of up to three years’ jail and a fine. The Singapore government takes a serious view of threats to the country’s social cohesion and racial harmony, including from external actors, and will act resolutely against them, it added. Mr Tong said the government will continue …

Entry level hideouts often only require a bedsheet and a couple of chairs, and it doesn’t take much effort to expand the floorspace to accommodate guests. Constructing an intimidatingly expansive blanket enclave is a much bigger feat of engineering, however. At least, that’s what it looks like from photos showcasing the newest Guinness World Record holder for the largest blanket fort. The current champions? Local residents and high schoolers in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fort needed to be tall enough to allow inhabitants to sit comfortably inside it. Panetta on Pulte: Intelligence community getting ‘a political hack’

Former CIA Director Leon Panetta on Thursday morning derided President Trump’s new pick to lead national intelligence operations: Bill Pulte. Panetta, who also served as Defense secretary under former President Obama, told NPR’s Leila Fadel on “Morning Edition” that Pulte, currently the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, has “absolutely no business” serving in… Source link

Canada is failing the Jewish community and Jews are being targeted, Prime Minister Carney says

Canada is failing the Jewish community and Jews are being targeted, Prime Minister Carney says

TORONTO (AP) — Canada is failing Jewish Canadians and the community is being brutally targeted by hate, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday. Carney said across Canada, antisemitism has surged to levels not seen in the post-World War II era. He noted that last year over two-thirds of all religion-motivated hate crimes were directed at Jewish Canadians. Jews make up only 1% of the population. “The horror and shame are global. Our actions must be local. They start with clearly admitting that Canada’s civic compact is failing Jewish Canadians,” Carney said at Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. Carney said antisemites in Canada have fired bullets at Jewish schools and thrown firebombs at synagogues and attacked community centers. He said they have targeted Jewish-owned businesses and drove Jewish students from common spaces on university campuses. Carney said antisemitism plagues Europe, Australia and the United States. But he said the crisis of antisemitism in Canada is “specific, severe and demands a targeted response.” There has been a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents globally since the Israel-Hamas war …

The unique capabilities of the Icelandic High-Performance Computing (IHPC) community

The unique capabilities of the Icelandic High-Performance Computing (IHPC) community

The IHPC Community Simulation and Data Labs (SDLs) are interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers with complementary skills in Iceland In response to the many challenges posed by rapid technological innovation in high–performance computing (HPC) hardware, complex simulations at unprecedented scales, and the rapid evolution and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in HPC applications, the IHPC Community comprises scientific and engineering application-domain-specific SDLs to work with HPC users. Alongside offering a wide variety of tailored HPC training, these SDLs address thematically focused HPC application use cases from academia, industry, startups, small-medium enterprises (SMEs), and the public sector, engaging with HPC users through physics-based simulation science codes or AI support tools. SDLs form a bridge between the ever-increasing complexity of disruptive HPC and quantum computing infrastructure technologies and a specific scientific and engineering research and innovation area. Their purpose is to serve as a point of contact for a specific HPC competency, enabling close collaboration with the broader community of domain-specific applications and user groups in Iceland. At the time of writing, the IHPC community comprises …

How Song Circles Are Rebuilding Community

How Song Circles Are Rebuilding Community

“Throughout human history, creating social bonds across large groups has been one of our most persistent challenges. Emerging research suggests that group singing may be one of our most powerful tools for doing so.” — Kendra Hoffman, Founder of Ladybug Earthcare In 2016, I applied for and received a grant to do research in Nepal. I was 19 and went with two friends from the country, where we spent two months exploring different forms of education. When I say “research,” I say it lightly, because what I mostly found myself doing was leading song circles about moose and mangos. The grant allowed me to visit three schools: one public school in Kathmandu; one private school in rural Western Nepal founded by my friend Prakash, nowhere near Everest but on the opposite side of the country; and another school in the city founded on Buddhist principles. The original idea was that I would shadow classes and quietly observe. I imagined myself taking notes in the back of rooms, trying to understand the structure of things. That …

Middle-Class People Struggle With Finding Community, Says A Finance Expert

Middle-Class People Struggle With Finding Community, Says A Finance Expert

Middle-class Americans are often portrayed as stable. Not struggling enough to receive any financial assistance, but also not wealthy enough to enjoy true financial freedom. However, there’s one challenge the middle class often faces that has nothing to do with money, yet neither the upper nor the lower class seems to experience it. Unlike the wealthy, who have exclusive social networks and can afford anything they might need, and those in poverty, who rely on close-knit support systems, middle-class individuals often find themselves stuck in between, and it tends to be quite lonely. A finance expert named Lyn Allure highlighted this phenomenon on social media, explaining, “Poor people have community, rich people have resources, and the middle class suffers the most.” People in the middle class often struggle to find coherence and community. In a TikTok video, Lyn shared that she has had the unique experience of living in three different socioeconomic environments, saying, “I was born in the hood. When I was 11, we moved to the suburbs, very middle-class. And around my mid …

A Replica of a 4500-Year-Old Community Hall to Open at Stonehenge

A Replica of a 4500-Year-Old Community Hall to Open at Stonehenge

English Heritage, a charity that manages over 400 historic sites across England, unveiled their reconstruction of a 4,500-year-old building at Stonehenge on Friday. The $1.34 million, 23-foot-high Kusuma Neolithic Hall, which will open this summer, will help visitors imagine the lives of Stonehenge’s prehistoric builders. The structure is based on the footprint of a long-vanished building at the nearby Neolithic archaeological site Durrington Walls and was built over nine months by more than 100 volunteers. Under the guidance of award-winning experimental archaeologist Luke Winter, the volunteers used only historically accurate methods, including stone axes, and locally sourced materials such as reed thatch, pine timbers, and chalk daub to raise the structure. Related Articles While the purpose of the original structure is uncertain, animal bones and pottery excavated at the Durrington Walls suggest it was used for large celebrations or feasts. And whether or not there may have ever been a hall of this sort at Stonehenge itself, the project offers insight into Neolithic culture in the wider area. “Seeing the structure take shape – from …

Lawsuit targets whites-only Arkansas community after applicant claims she was rejected for Jewish roots, Black husband

Orwoll characterized the policy as “free association,” not segregation. On its website, Return to the Land describes itself a “private membership association (PMA) for individuals and families with traditional views and common continental ancestry.” Walker’s attorney, Reed Colfax, argued Return to the Land is a racist organization in violation of federal anti-discrimination laws dating to 1866. “Return to the Land’s actions constitute blatant and brazen violations of long-standing federal and state fair housing laws,” Reed Colfax said in a statement posted on the Legal Defense Fund website. “Ms. Walker has been deprived of her housing and civil rights, including the right to purchase land and build housing.” Walker, a real estate broker in and around St. Louis, Missouri, said in the complaint that she learned last summer that the group was selling land in the Ozarks, “an area where she occasionally vacationed.” She was drawn to the listing partly because the asking price was unusually low, and she decided to apply, citing both the investment potential and other possibilities the land offered. During the application …

Native American Philosophy Challenges Everything We Know About Community

Native American Philosophy Challenges Everything We Know About Community

Summary In Native American thought, identity is fundamentally relational, shaped by deep connections to land, people, and community. Knowledge grows from embodied participation and lived experience, viewing epistemology and ethics as inseparably linked. Indigenous ethics begins with the community “We” over the individual “I,” emphasizing shared responsibility and collective well-being. Many Indigenous worldviews reject rigid Western binaries, instead favoring complementarity, fluidity, and dynamic connections. Show more   Philosophy is traditionally associated with the ideas that emerged from Ancient Greece, culminating in contemporary European thought. For centuries, Native American thought was dismissed as myth or religion rather than philosophy. To contest the claim, scholars such as Anne Waters argue that certain Indigenous intellectual traditions carry their own distinctive interpretations of metaphysics, ethics, and epistemology. Unlike the Western canon, Native American philosophy emphasizes relationships between land, people, and community.   Land, Place, and Community Taos Pueblo Entrance, Ansel Adams, c. 1929–1941.
