Your rights, compensation and what to do if your flight is cancelled | UK | News

The Iran war has thrown the summer travel season into uncertainty, with jet fuel supplies disrupted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and airlines privately warning the government that cuts to flights and fare hikes may be unavoidable if the situation does not improve. A document seen by ITV News, submitted to ministers and the Civil Aviation Authority, cautioned that if the disruption “continues or worsens” airlines will be forced to reduce services and push prices higher. Fuel costs for passengers on flights within the EU have already risen by roughly £25 per person, with a Barcelona to Berlin flight now costing airlines around £22 more per passenger in fuel alone. With cancellations and timetable changes already affecting some carriers this summer, here is everything you need to know about your rights, what you are entitled to and how to claim it. What is causing flight cancellations in summer 2025? The closure of the Strait of Hormuz — through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies pass — has disrupted jet …

Claim sooner rather than later, experts urge, after £7.5bn car loan compensation scheme launched | Motor finance

Claim sooner rather than later, experts urge, after £7.5bn car loan compensation scheme launched | Motor finance

Complain now to be at the front of the queue. That is the message from the City regulator and the consumer champion Martin Lewis as a scheme gets under way to pay out about £7.5bn in total to millions of motorists mis-sold car loans. More information emerged this week about how much money the different categories of people might get and how it will all work after Monday’s announcement that an industry-wide compensation scheme for victims of the UK’s car finance scandal is definitely going ahead. Here are five main takeaways: Technically it’s two schemes. The plan was always for a single compensation scheme, but this week it emerged that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has set up two. Scheme 1 covers older motor finance agreements, those taken out between 6 April 2007 and 31 March 2014; scheme 2 is for more recent ones, those taken out between 1 April 2014 and 1 November 2024. As they are broadly similar, the FCA is generally referring to them collectively as “the scheme”. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) …

Car finance scandal: What happened and am I eligible for compensation? | UK News

Millions of motorists who were mis-sold car finance agreements are due to receive £829 on average in compensation, it has been announced. But why is this happening, and who can make a claim? Sky News explains… The scandal When you buy a car on finance, you are effectively loaned the money for the vehicle, which you pay off in monthly instalments. These loans carry interest, organised by brokers (the people who sell you the finance plan). These brokers earn money in the form of a commission (which is a percentage of the interest payments). Before January 2021, some car finance lenders had what was called a “discretionary commission arrangement” (DCA) with brokers. Under these arrangements, brokers earned more commission if buyers were put on a higher interest rate – this incentivised sellers to maximise interest rates, which meant many were unfairly charged too much. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) banned this practice in 2021, but many consumers complained they had been overcharged before the ban came into place. Following legal action and an investigation, the …

Cardiff City lose compensation bid against Nantes over Emiliano Sala plane crash death | UK News

Cardiff City lose compensation bid against Nantes over Emiliano Sala plane crash death | UK News

Cardiff City’s compensation claim over the death of footballer Emiliano Sala has been rejected by a French court. He was killed in a plane crash on his way to begin his Premier League career in January 2019. Cardiff paid Nantes a club-record fee for Sala, 28, but he never played after the light aircraft came down in the English Channel. The Welsh club sued Nantes for more than £100m over alleged negligence connected to the crash, which also killed pilot David Ibbotson. Sky Sports News reported that Cardiff contended Nantes were responsible because they enlisted agent Willie McKay, whose son, Mark McKay, was Sala’s representative, to arrange the flight. Nantes denied that claim. However, the court has now decided Nantes was not at fault, and Cardiff did not suffer any reputational harm. It called Cardiff’s claim “extravagant” and instead said Nantes had suffered reputational damage. Cardiff was ordered to pay €300,000 in damages and €180,000 (£416,000 in total) in legal costs. The club have been involved in a legal battle over the case for years. …

Bailiffs board Ryanair plane after airline refuses to pay delayed flight compensation | Ryanair

Bailiffs board Ryanair plane after airline refuses to pay delayed flight compensation | Ryanair

Bailiffs have boarded a Ryanair aircraft after the airline refused to pay compensation to a passenger whose flight was delayed. Austrian officials took action after the budget carrier ignored a court order to pay the unnamed woman €890 (£742) in legal costs and compensation for a delayed flight two years ago. A bailiff entered the plane, which was bound for London, as it sat on the stand at Linz airport on Monday and fixed a seizure sticker to the cabin when crew were unable to settle the debt. The label, known as a “cuckoo sticker”, gives the court legal control over the aircraft, which was allowed to continue to operate under set conditions. The court can sell the Boeing 737 at public auction if the debt is not paid by a deadline. The dispute began in 2024 when a flight from Linz to the Spanish island of Mallorca was delayed by 13 hours. A passenger who was forced to pay for an alternative flight claimed a refund of her expenses and compensation under aviation regulations. …

Playstation gamers could receive £2bn compensation if lawsuit succeeds | Science, Climate & Tech News

PlayStation gamers could be owed £2bn in compensation, according to a lawsuit launched today. If successful, the class action case brought by consumer champion Alex Neill could mean cheaper PlayStation games and UK gamers receiving around £162 each in compensation. The case hinges on how the digital PlayStation Store, run by the console’s manufacturer Sony, operates. Ms Neill argues Sony has been “exploiting its UK customers, by charging them too much” for digital games and in-game content. Image: Person picks a game on the PlayStation Store The lawsuit claims Sony broke competition law through its control of the PlayStation Store, meaning that “Sony has a near monopoly on the sale of digital games and add-on content”. Developers are charged around 30% commission for selling games in the store and Sony sets the price of games. Ms Neill says this has resulted in “excessive and unfair prices” for gamers, with the digital games allegedly costing around 20% more than physical copies. Money problem: The broadband compensation rule that means reader is owed £2,000 | Money News

Our Money team helps a reader every week with their consumer issue or financial dispute… Today, the problem comes from a reader called Kevin… My contract with Plusnet was coming to an end in April 2025 and I decided to switch from broadband to full fibre. The activation date was 14/4/25 but nine months later I am still waiting for the service to be activated. Other properties around me have full fibre. I was paying £28.99pm and now having to pay out-of-contract pricing at £62.44pm. Delays have been blamed on work needing to be scheduled by Openreach. Plusnet have told me they will refund the difference for the out-of-contract pricing and that they won’t apply the 60-day missed service date compensation cap. As of 13/1/26 this means they owe me £1,709.76 for the missed activation date and £275.12 for out of contract refund. When phoning Plusnet I have been discouraged to leave as I will likely face the same issue with other supplies and may not get the compensation above. This has left me in …

Outrage over ‘ridiculous’ compensation for ‘unethical research’ victims, including boys infected with HIV and hepatitis | UK News

Outrage over ‘ridiculous’ compensation for ‘unethical research’ victims, including boys infected with HIV and hepatitis | UK News

Proposed compensation for victims of “unethical testing” at a college, leaving them with HIV and hepatitis, has been branded “ridiculous” by a charity. Between the 1970s and early 1990s more than 30,000 people in the UK were infected with HIV and hepatitis after being given contaminated blood and blood products in what was dubbed the worst treatment disaster in NHS history. More than £2bn has now been paid in compensation to victims of the infected blood scandal. However, a charity has raised “profound concerns” about an element of the payouts for people who were victims of “unethical research”. Pupils at the Lord Mayor’s Treloar’s College in Hampshire, who were undergoing haemophilia treatment, were also experimented on without their knowledge by NHS clinicians, who knew the dangers it posed. The Infected Blood Public Inquiry’s report, published in May 2024, found that boys with the disorder who attended the school were treated as “objects for research” and were given “multiple, riskier” treatments. They have been offered a one-off £15,000 payment on top of ongoing support, with a …

Passengers left with no compensation after Stansted and Heathrow flight delays | Consumer affairs

In September we arrived at Stansted airport to find that a fire within a departure lounge had closed the terminal. We had to wait outside in the chilly small hours for nearly two hours. It was another hour before security opened in the terminal, by which time our flight had departed empty to maintain the airline’s schedules. We were rebooked for the following day. We had to take the train home and pay for a taxi to take us to the airport for a second time early the next morning. We are thus more than £100 out of pocket. The airport tells us it’s not its fault. The airline says the (empty) flight left on time, so it is not its responsibility. Our insurers say we would be covered for an unforeseen delay in arriving at the airport, such as disruption to our journey there, but the small print doesn’t allow for the circumstances we actually found ourselves in. JF, London The previous month, FN and her husband found themselves in a similar predicament at …
