David Mitchell and Robert Webb confirm format change for new sketches

David Mitchell and Robert Webb have announced the launch of a YouTube channel intended to expand the reach of their current Channel 4 sketch comedy. Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping launched on Channel 4 last year, seeing the comedy duo return to the format that propelled them to stardom on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Two in the 2000s. They partnered up with Ghosts alum Kiell Smith-Bynoe and rising stars Stevie Martin, Krystal Evans and Lara Ricote, with the mission to reinvigorate sketch comedy after a long period of stagnation. Their efforts were certainly appreciated, with Channel 4 revealing that Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping was its most-watched new scripted comedy for six years. A second season is on the way with a revised release strategy — an expanded presence on YouTube will accompany the Channel 4 broadcast, in a bid to attract new viewers from all over the world (via Deadline). New rules confirm public has a right to see how UK government uses AI

The use of AI chatbots is subject to the UK’s Freedom of Information laws Maurice from Zoetermeer (CC BY 2.0) Text, images and other content produced by UK government departments and other public bodies using artificial intelligence are subject to freedom of information (FOI) laws, regulators have confirmed – potentially opening the door for the public to gain access to ministers’ ChatGPT or other chatbot records. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data-protection agency, has released new guidance confirming that “If staff at a public authority use AI for work purposes, the information generated will be subject to FOIA [the Freedom of Information Act] along with the prompts used”. Last year, New Scientist successfully requested the then-UK tech secretary Peter Kyle’s ChatGPT logs under FOI legislation, in what is believed to be a world first. That triggered subsequent requests from other news outlets to obtain other information, but many have either been rejected on cost grounds or labelled as “vexatious”, an umbrella term that allows authorities to reject a request. The clarification by the …

Promising biosignatures on alien worlds could take years to confirm

Promising biosignatures on alien worlds could take years to confirm

A faint blip on a telescope readout can set off a wave of excitement. Maybe it is a molecule tied to life. Maybe it is drifting through a distant nebula where stars are forming. Or maybe it is hanging in the atmosphere of a neighboring planet. However, it might even change how you think about chemistry across the universe. Astronomers now know of more than 350 molecules in the spaces between and around stars. This knowledge was built up over just under a century of work since the first such molecule was reported in 1937. Each year adds anywhere from a few to a couple dozen more. Some of them are considered precursors to biomolecules. That is one reason each new claim can draw so much attention. That growing catalog has opened an extraordinary view of cosmic chemistry. However, it has also made one thing clear: finding molecules in space is hard, and getting the answer right often takes time. Evoke takeover talks by Bally’s Intralot confirm pressure on gambling group finances

Evoke has confirmed it is talking with Bally’s Intralot S.A. about a possible takeover, ending days of market chatter around the debt-laden betting group that owns William Hill and 888. The London-listed company said the early-stage approach values the business at 50 pence a share ($0.68). Investors have been watching for signs of corporate interest after a difficult stretch marked by tax pressure, store closures and questions over leverage. In a stock exchange statement, Evoke said it “notes the recent media speculation and confirms that it is in discussions with Bally’s Intralot S.A. … regarding a possible offer for the entire issued and to be issued share capital of the Company at a price of 50 pence per share.” The company added that the proposal “is expected to comprise an all-share combination with a partial cash alternative.” The board said there “can be no certainty that an offer will be made or as to the terms on which any offer might be made,” and said shareholders “are advised not to take any action in relation …

Proto-mammals laid eggs, paleontologists finally confirm

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Every mammal gives birth to live young, except for a handful of egg-laying monotremes like the platypus. But did the earliest ancestors of mammals also reproduce through eggs? It’s a question that’s stumped evolutionary biologists for decades, but researchers finally have a definitive answer. Published on April 9 in the journal PLOS One, their findings rely on a 250-million-year-old fossilized egg, sophisticated technological advances, and a lot of patience. Paleontologists discovered the specimen in question almost 17 years ago during an excavation in South Africa’s Karoo Basin. The arid region located over 200 miles northeast of Cape Town is particularly well known for its vast troves of ancient fossils. “My preparator and exceptional fossil finder, John Nyaphuli, identified a small nodule that at first revealed only tiny flecks of bone. As he carefully prepared the specimen, it became clear that it was a perfectly curled-up Lystrosaurus hatchling,” University of the Witwatersrand paleobiologist Jennifer Botha said in a statement.  The …
