Channel 4 faces backlash over ‘most controversial show of the year’

An ADHD charity has called for the public to complain about Channel 4‘s latest documentary to Ofcom after its presenter labelled the disorder a “social construct”. The Great ADHD Myth?, which aired last night (Tuesday 18 August) on Channel 4, sees presenter and NHS psychiatrist Max Pemberton speak to medical professionals who are sceptical about Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) being a legitimate medical condition, particularly in young children. ADHD is recognised by the NHS as a condition where those affected struggle to concentrate or sit still. Symptoms can include having high energy levels, getting easily distracted, being forgetful, losing things often and finding it hard to organise your time. However, Pemberton’s documentary questions whether ADHD is a neuro-developmental disorder, how it should be treated and who benefits from the rise in diagnoses over the last few years. It also conducts an experiment which sees 10-year-old Mason stop taking his ADHD medication, which he has taken for two years, over a six-week period to see whether consuming less sugar, banning screen time and introducing yoga helps instead. …

One area that the Grammy winner has always managed to express herself is through her music videos, something which she’s carried on right up to the present day, with her recent Confessions II short film. Sex, religion and occasionally even violence have all been featured prominently throughout her attention-grabbing music videos, sparking debate, inciting boycotts and opening up important conversations in the process. As the Queen of Pop celebrates her 68th birthday, we’re looking back at all the times her music videos have been at the centre of controversy… 1984: Like A Virgin With her debut album, Madonna bagged herself a decent-sized fanbase thanks to her catchy tunes and unique sense of style, as showcased in the videos for Borderline and Lucky Star. The series follows six women — Tammy, Macy, Emily, Brianna, Megan and Heather — based in the St. Louis, Missouri, area who have built secret careers as adult content creators on platforms like OnlyFans. Two of the women are former teachers who made headlines in 2023 when they were placed on leave following the discovery of their OnlyFans pages. Viewers who tuned into the premiere episode weren’t impressed, with one writing on X that it was like “a reality version of Desperate Housewives.” “And yet somehow this overhyped slop is the most boring @TLC show that I’ve seen in a while. Now that’s a trick,” one viewer wrote on X as someone responded, “Yes very boring, I was waiting …

Knox, who was falsely imprisoned in 2009 for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher, performed her new show Cartwheel on Friday night following unsuccessful calls for it to be pulled from the line-up. Kercher, an exchange student from the University of Leeds, was killed aged 21 in Perugia, Italy in 2007. Knox was convicted in 2009, along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, of Kercher’s murder and sexual assault. She was released from prison in 2011 and cleared by Italy’s Supreme Court in 2015. The show’s title refers to a story that the now-39-year-old did cartwheels in the police station following Kercher’s death. Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more The Met Gala is once again honoring a boundary-breaking fashion designer with its annual theme — but the subject for the 2027 event is proving controversial. On Friday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition next year will be titled “John Galliano: Horizon,” recognizing the work of the British designer, who is widely considered to be one of the most influential — and polarizing — tastemakers of the past four decades. Galliano, who was temporarily exiled from the industry in 2011 after his antisemitic and racist comments surfaced, will be the subject of the Costume Institute’s annual exhibit and the accompanying red carpet extravaganza, one of the biggest nights on the fashion calendar. The event will celebrate Galliano’s work, …

ChatGPT just blocked its most controversial writing feature

ChatGPT just blocked its most controversial writing feature

Summary ChatGPT now refuses prompts to mimic specific named authors. The move is likely spurred by big copyright settlements and author lawsuits. Claude and Gemini still comply; users can describe author traits instead. OpenAI’s ChatGPT will no longer carry out prompts that request that the chatbot mimic a particular author’s style. As reported by Ars Technica, ChatGPT has begun rejecting requests to generate text in the style of living authors like Stephen King or dead authors like Charles Dickens and Ernest Hemingway. Though the chatbot refused to directly comply, it did offer to write something “with the hallmarks of atmospheric, character-driven horror and small-town dread,” showing it could still imitate some elements of an author’s work. Reddit users have already noticed the change, with some complaining that they had paid for a subscription and that it was ruining their book-writing process. OpenAI hasn’t officially announced the change or explained the reasoning behind the move — but Anthropic’s recent copyright lawsuit settlement may well have pushed the artificial intelligence company to act now. ChatGPT won’t write …

Controversial Gelman Collection to Inaugurate Spain’s New Faro Santander

The Banco Santander Foundation announced September 8 as the new opening date for its forthcoming art center, the Faro Santander. The news was first reported by El País. The space’s three inaugural shows include a Leonora Carrington solo, an exhibition looking at the Banco Santander’s previously unseen collection of masterpieces, and “Modern Mexico in the Gelman Santander Collection,” drawing from the holdings of the Gelman Collection, which has been mired in controversy since January when the foundation revealed that it now owned 160 of the 300 works that had been assembled by Jacques and Natasha Gelman between 1941 and 1998. They were originally to go on view at the Faro Santander in June.   The Gelman Collection is considered one of the most important holdings of Mexican art, with important works by some of the country’s most influential 20th-century artists, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Many of the works in the collection are categorized as “artistic monuments” under Mexican law, meaning they cannot be permanently removed …

For Taylor Swift, Madison Square Garden’s Controversial Cameras Briefly Went Dark

Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan has insisted that the face-recognition system and array of surveillance cameras deployed at his venues is “very, very useful for security”—a big reason why MSG “is the most secure venue in the country.” On the night of July 2, security in and around the Garden was particularly intense. Roughly 130 cops were deployed to the area. New York City officials were preparing to shut down the surrounding blocks to both vehicles and pedestrians the next day for a major, major event. July 2 was, of course, the kickoff to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding celebration, an approximately 100-person rehearsal dinner at Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theater. And yet, on that extremely sensitive evening, Dolan’s MSG locked nearly all of its security team out of the network of surveillance cameras inside the arena, according to an internal document reviewed by WIRED. The move functionally prevented MSG security from fully operating the venue’s controversial face-recognition program that evening, two sources familiar with the Garden’s operations say. While the shutdown order …
