Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian artist, film-maker and graphic novelist whose acclaimed memoir Persepolis helped reshape international perceptions of Iran, has died at the age of 56. In a statement provided to French news agency AFP, relatives said she had “died of sadness” after the death of her husband, the Swedish producer Mattias Ripa. Ripa died on 8 April last year. Later that month, a series of messages posted on Satrapi’s Instagram account revealed the phrase: “For I lost the love of my life.” Tributes have been paid to Satrapi from across French politics and culture following news of her death. President Emmanuel Macron said Satrapi was “a great artist who turned her Iranian childhood into a universal tale,” adding: “With her childlike perspective, her irony, her tenderness, her inner demons, the author created a moving world with which readers identified.” Writing on X, Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the French National Assembly, said: “Marjane Satrapi had turned her work into an act of freedom. Tip Toe Creator Russell T Davies Brands Elon Musk-Owned X A 'Hate Site'

Russell T Davies appearing on Loose Women in 2023 Bafta-winning screenwriter Russell T Davies had a lot to get off his chest while putting together his new drama Tip Toe. The hard-hitting Channel 4 series tackles a number of thorny issues relating to modern society, many of which stem from the murkier depths of the internet, including online radicalisation, misinformation and the dangers of unregulated social media. During a new interview with HuffPost UK to promote his latest TV offering, the It’s A Sin creator took particular issue with the Elon Musk-owned X, formerly known as Twitter, which he said had descended into “hate site” status in recent years. Russell – who hasn’t posted on X since 2021 – explained that he’d even run into some “very big problems” during his most recent work at the BBC, having “refused to be part of any press release that went on Twitter”. “I said, I’m taking my name off anything [that goes on X],” he recalled. “There is no way a publicly-funded corporation should be posting on a hate …

Amazon Is Making an AI-Animated ‘Good Advice Cupcake’ TV Show. Its Original Creator Is Furious

Author and illustrator Loryn Brantz never imagined that a popular cartoon character she created almost a decade ago would one day be the subject of an intellectual property dispute involving BuzzFeed, Amazon’s video streaming service, and generative artificial intelligence. But that’s exactly the situation she finds herself in today. “Nothing said in good faith by managers and executives was followed through with,” Brantz says of BuzzFeed, her former employer. This week, Brantz shared an Instagram post calling out the once-dominant media brand. She was responding to news that the company had licensed her advice-giving cupcake character, Cuppy, to Prime Video, which plans to release a series called Cupcake & Friends, developed with AI tools. It’s one of three new animated shows greenlit through the GenAI Creators’ Fund, a joint initiative of Amazon Web Services and Amazon MGM Studios. “This is an assault on artists everywhere,” Brantz declared in her post. The headlines announcing the project were a nightmare come true—and a scenario that everyone who works in a creative field has begun to dread in …

Good Advice Cupcake Creator Slams BuzzFeed for Teaming With Amazon on AI Show

The creator of Cuppy, the star of the web series The Good Advice Cupcake, is calling out BuzzFeed for partnering with Amazon for an AI-created animated series about the character. Loryn Brantz took to her Instagram, saying she’s “horrified and disgusted by BuzzFeed taking my character, The Good Advice Cupcake, and giving it to an AI platform.” Brantz initially developed Cuppy as a comic during her time at BuzzFeed before it was adapted into an animated web series by animator and voice actor Kyra Kupetsky. “My time at BuzzFeed was marked by continually being taken advantage of and lied to,” she continued. “They repeatedly assured me in good faith that they would never do anything with Cuppy without my input, yet offered me no legal options, insisting that I would never need them. The news that this character, who is based on my own personality and whom I created as a microphone to spread love and positivity, has been taken and turned into a soulless AI puppet feels like having my intestines pulled out of …

‘The Boys’ Creator on ‘Vought Rising’ Spinoff’s Different Tone

The Boys is over — but spinoff Vought Rising is coming next year. The prequel series to Prime Video‘s satirical anti-superhero hit is set in 1950 and focuses on fan-favorite character Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and season two breakout Stormfront (Aya Cash). The story has been described as a twisted murder mystery that charts the origins of the sinister Vought corporation. The Hollywood Reporter asked The Boys creator Eric Kripke about the spinoff and how the new show’s tone compares to the original. “It’s definitely got some Boys‘ DNA in that it’s irreverent and graphic,” Kripke said. “But it has this sort of lovely, almost noir-like murder mystery — not Black Noir but actual noir. There are detectives and twists, and there’s a murder that then opens up into a bigger conspiracy.” Continued Kripke: “We’re also trying to do a very gritty version of the ’50s. Most people’s feeling or sense memory of the ’50s is from movies, which are very sanitized. Even L.A. Confidential, as much as I love it, is visually a pretty …
