Crowe, 62, led the filmmaker’s original Gladiator in 2000, alongside Connie Nielsen and Joaquin Phoenix. His portrayal of the stoic and loyal Maximus, Rome’s powerful general leader during the 2nd century AD, earned him an Oscar for Best Actor. The actor was left unimpressed by the sequel, starring Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, as it messed with the legacy of the original and “destroyed” its moral core. Paul Mescal led 2024 sequel ‘Gladiator 2’ (Paramount Pictures) Speaking at the Taormina Film Festival, as reported by Deadline, Crowe said, back when he was filming the first Gladiator, he “kept pushing back” on the suggestion his character should have sex scenes. “I said, ‘This is a story about a man who’s avenging the death of his wife …

Russell Crowe says Gladiator 2 “failed” over key original detail

Russell Crowe says Gladiator 2 “failed” over key original detail

Russell Crowe has suggested that Gladiator II failed to connect with audiences in the same way as the original film because it lacked the “moral core” that made Maximus’s story so powerful. The actor, who won an Oscar for his performance as Roman general-turned-gladiator Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic, did not return for the 2024 sequel, which instead focused on Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. Speaking at the Taormina Film Festival, Crowe reflected on the success of the first film and said he believed its emotional appeal rested on Maximus’s unwavering devotion to his murdered wife and child. He recalled resisting studio suggestions during production that Maximus should have sex scenes, arguing that they would undermine the central drive of the character. “I just kept pushing back,” Crowe said (via Deadline). “I said, ‘This is a story about a man who’s avenging the death of his wife and his child. There cannot be a moment on that journey where he stops and has sex with somebody. It doesn’t make any sense… that …

Russell Crowe, Rising Watch Vlogger, Shows Off His New Insider-Darling Piece

Those of you with the right algorithm have no doubt seen the flood of watch content creators that have surged onto social media over the past few years. However, one recent addition to the flock made an immediate impression: Russell Crowe. The actor and longtime watch enthusiast has been busy on TikTok posting in-depth reviews of his favorite watches, including a Rolex Daytona with a Tiffany-blue dial, a pair from Japanese indie brand Otsuka Lotec, and a few Patek Philippe Nautiluses. The latest TikTok video posted to the former Gladiator star’s account is a recap of his time in Paris that features clips of him and his wife at the French Open. However, the real star of this video is a Tonda PF Micro-Rotor from collector-loved brand Parmigiani Fleurier. Crowe’s TikTok features the jaunty Parisian jam “Les passants” by Zaz and starts and ends with loving slo-mo close-ups of the two-tone Tonda PF. Parmigiani Fleurier occupies a peculiar position within modern watchmaking. Founded in 1996 by Michel Parmigiani, the PF brand spent years existing as …

Russell Crowe calls ‘clickbait’ on autograph seekers interaction

Russell Crowe calls ‘clickbait’ on autograph seekers interaction

Russell Crowe has pushed back against TMZ’s coverage of his recent interactions with a crowd of autograph seekers. “Clickbait,” the “Gladiator” actor wrote in a Monday post on X. “Everybody got their autograph and selfie, the passage to the hotel was kept free for guests, and I still got to the airport on time. One man, no security. Handled. What’s your problem ?” Earlier that day, the outlet had posted a video of Crowe addressing a crowd of fans and autograph seekers outside of a Paris hotel before making his way to them to sign various memorabilia. “If you needed a reminder that fans are not always priority No. 1 — turn to Russell Crowe — cause the guy was absolutely not having it outside of his Paris hotel,” TMZ wrote in its since-deleted X post sharing the video. The outlet also framed the video as Crowe “explod[ing] on Pushy Autograph Seekers” in its news story. In the video, the Academy Award winner is shown giving clear directions to those gathered for his autograph or …

The famously taciturn Aussie was filmed exiting the hotel on Sunday (24 May), where he was faced with a wall of autograph hunters. In the video, he can be seen urging the crowd to stay put – albeit swearily – and saying that he would bolt if any crushing occurs. “Stay where you are, don’t f***ing push in on me,” Crowe said. “I’ll come to you. Give everybody space.” To reiterate his seriousness, he added: “As soon as somebody is a d***, I’m gone. You got me? We clear?” Crowe can then be seen signing portraits of many of his old films, including Gladiator. One person asks Crowe to sign the picture “Maximus”, his character in the 2000 Ridley Scott epic, only to be told …

‘Beast’ Director on Crafting an MMA Drama, Directing Russell Crowe

‘Beast’ Director on Crafting an MMA Drama, Directing Russell Crowe

In Beast, Australian director Tyler Atkins (Boasch & Rockit, aka Ocean Boy) sets out to do something more ambitious than simply stage bone-crunching fight sequences. His debut feature in the MMA arena is as much about family, identity and masculinity as it is about survival inside the cage. Shot across between Australia and Thailand, Beast pairs visceral action with an emotional core anchored by a working-class fighter torn between who he is and who he’s expected to be. With Russell Crowe lending gravitas as a battle-hardened trainer (Sammy) and Daniel MacPherson embodying the conflicted fighter (Patton James) at its centre, Atkins leans into the human cost of violence — and the strength required to endure it. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter Australia, Atkins reflects on the film’s unconventional production and his personal philosophy that shaped its themes. Beast opens in U.S. theaters on April 10, and at home in Australia on April 23. First of all, congratulations. This was a complex shoot — how long did it actually take? Thank you. It’s a hard one …

Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe in 1930s Crime Saga

Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe in 1930s Crime Saga

An original saga with novelistic roots in Great Depression Americana and classic Westerns, Padraic McKinley’s first feature, The Weight, in theory has a lot going for it — a vivid evocation of the rugged Oregon wilderness in 1933, an atmospheric score, a pair of leads with the requisite gravitas in Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, playing driven men on different sides of the law. The director also sticks some creditable influences on his mood board, William Friedkin’s Sorcerer being the most obvious of them. Aiming to emulate the introspective action-adventure survival thrillers of the 1970s is no bad place to start. But grit, rawness and dirty-realist poetry can be elusive elements to conjure, even in a production that cultivates those qualities with a rough-and-ready feel for the scrappy, sweaty storytelling of another era. Ironically, despite such juicy elements as gold, greed and survival, The Weight lacks weight. For a high-stakes drama that throws a small band of desperate, downtrodden men into an environment of ruthless thugs and crooks in authority positions, requiring considerable stamina and …
