Russell Crowe says Gladiator 2 “failed” over key original detail

Russell Crowe has suggested that Gladiator II failed to connect with audiences in the same way as the original film because it lacked the “moral core” that made Maximus’s story so powerful.

The actor, who won an Oscar for his performance as Roman general-turned-gladiator Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic, did not return for the 2024 sequel, which instead focused on Lucius, played by Paul Mescal.

Speaking at the Taormina Film Festival, Crowe reflected on the success of the first film and said he believed its emotional appeal rested on Maximus’s unwavering devotion to his murdered wife and child.

He recalled resisting studio suggestions during production that Maximus should have sex scenes, arguing that they would undermine the central drive of the character.

“I just kept pushing back,” Crowe said (via Deadline). “I said, ‘This is a story about a man who’s avenging the death of his wife and his child. There cannot be a moment on that journey where he stops and has sex with somebody. It doesn’t make any sense… that destroys the journey’.

“They fought me, they sent me letters about it and everything, and I just stuck to my guns. Luckily for me, Ridley […] he agreed with me back then, and that that was the moral core of the film.

“So for them, in a second movie to destroy that moral centre, it’s very interesting because the second movie barely took the same box office that the first movie took but that’s 20 years later.

“And when you apply how much of a change there’s been on the value of a dollar, they failed, and they failed because they didn’t understand why it was successful, because it had a moral core.”

The original Gladiator was a major critical and commercial hit, winning five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe.

Gladiator II saw Scott return to the director’s chair, with a cast including Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger and returning original stars Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi.

The sequel followed Lucius, the grown-up son of Lucilla, as he was forced into the Colosseum and drawn into a battle over the future of Rome.

At the box office, Gladiator II grossed $462.2m worldwide, including $172.4m domestically and $289.7m internationally. The original Gladiator grossed $465.5m worldwide, including $187.7m domestically and $277.8m internationally, across all releases. The 2000 film had a reported budget of $103m, while Gladiator II had a reported production budget of $250m.
