Carnage as Crystal Palace fans in wild street clash with ultras | World | News

Violent scenes of chair-tossing and drink-lobbing erupted in the German city of Leipzig on Tuesday night ahead of Wednesday’s Europa Conference League Final. A sudden confrontation between dozens of Crystal Palace fans and black-shirted Rayo Vallecano supporters was swiftly intercepted by riot police. Hooligans can be seen readying themselves for a united charge at their rivals before backtracking and instead opting to turn cafe furniture into missiles, soaring over the heads of police as an onlooking family appear to continue their birthday dinner. Footage posed on social media showed the fans violently clashing in the Irish bar just hours before the game between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano, for which thousands of British and Spanish fans had arrived today. Groups of men could be seen hurling pint glasses and bottles towards each other outside the bar, with others grabbing wooden chairs and throwing them across the square. German police have cordoned off an area near Leipzig’s main Market Square in response to the chaos, the Daily Mail reports. While no injuries or arrests have been …

West Ham hold on for precious point at Crystal Palace as Wolves relegated

The Wales winger passed up a great opportunity by heading Tyrick Mitchell’s cross wide while unmarked from 10 yards out. Johnson, booked for hacking El Hadji Malick Diouf down soon after, curled a much better effort marginally wide as West Ham continued to live dangerously. Axel Disasi thumped a reply over on the turn but was offside anyway, and a much better chance came their way six minutes before the break. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who had been a prominent partier in Italy, mistimed a punch that fell to Castellanos, whose overhead-kick was prevented from going in by Lacroix. The England keeper soon made amends with a superb stop to keep out Konstantinos Mavropanos’s header.  Jarrod Bowen saw Hughes block a shot early in the second half that, judging by his reaction, the England man had expected to see flying into the top corner. Bowen attempted an overhead kick soon after but that was blocked. West Ham soon had to repel a barrage of corners after Johnson, causing problems on the right, sent in dangerous centres. …

Jean-Philippe Mateta double seals comeback win for Crystal Palace and piles pressure on Eddie Howe

Afterwards Selhurst Park unsuccessfully reached for the high notes of Vengaboys, wholeheartedly forgiving their best striker since Andy Johnson. “I was delighted for him, I think that’s what he deserves,” said Glasner of Mateta. “As soon as it was clear he was to stay at Crystal Palace he said ‘OK, I will work very very hard to come back and help the team win and achieve all our goals’. “I think this is what he showed and he’s now getting back to his top fitness. The Newcastle centre-backs looked very fatigued at the end because they had to work very hard against him and all of the others.” “Mateta made a difference,” said a chastened Eddie Howe who has now watched Newcastle throw away 25 points from winning positions in the league. “It’s blighted our season, the fact that we haven’t been able to not just consolidate really good passages in games but go on and score more goals and continue to attack. “I’ve said many times that it is not a tactical instruction we …

The Europa League has become Forest’s unwanted distraction after Midtjylland take control

The Europa and Conference Leagues have reached the last-16 stage and we will be focused on two English clubs in action tonight. At the City Ground, Nottingham Forest host Midtjylland. When these teams met on this ground during the league phase, Midtjylland won 3-2 over Ange Postecoglou’s Forest in early October. Fast forward a couple of managers later and Forest head into this last-16 tie with Vitor Pereira at the helm. Forest are only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference but Pereira is not writing off Europe to solely focus on Premier League survival. “For now, we try to be competitive in both, in the Europe League and try to get points and results in our league,” Pereira said. “I need to try to balance, but to be competitive in the next game and afterwards against Fulham. It is important for the players to be ready to help the team, we need to be ready to challenge and perform. We have quality in the squad, they are working hard, with good energy, trying …

Carrick has instilled a fight in Man Utd that they lacked under Amorim,

“He has had a huge impact and is making big improvements,” Carrick said of Sesko. “He is getting used to being here. He is desperate to do well and is a pleasure to work with. He is a real threat. I’m really excited about where he can get to. He’s got huge potential.” There is little doubt the United coach has enjoyed some good fortune since taking over. First Diogo Dalot escaped what should have been a red card for a studs-up challenge against Jeremy Doku in the derby against Manchester City, and then Tottenham were reduced to 10 men after half an hour when Cristian Romero was sent off. Here, Palace spent much of the second half with a man down. Equally, Carrick could argue that you make your own luck. Despite Oliver Glasner’s grumblings, the rules state Christopher Kavanagh was right to award a penalty, even though Lacroix had initially grabbed hold of Cunha outside the penalty area before the Brazilian eventually tumbled in the box. Fernandes coolly converted the spot-kick and it …

Brighton fans turn on Hurzeler after defeat by bitter rivals Palace

Brighton fans turn on Hurzeler after defeat by bitter rivals Palace

“It’s not an easy situation but there are only two options: to give up or to keep working harder, and that’s always the option I choose so far in my life. “That’s why I am sitting here because I never give up. That’s what I will keep pushing to do. I think it’s the hardest moment [of my managerial career], but it’s also the moment where I try to get the most out of it, I learn the most and I will grow the most. I will face this adversity and I will get through it.” Brighton, who would have climbed into the top half of the table with three points, have now won just one of their last 12 top-flight fixtures. Supporters initially took aim at Hürzeler in the 71st minute when he replaced Maxim De Cuyper, Carlos Baleba and Harry Howell with Diego Gómez, Yankuba Minteh and Danny Welbeck in a triple substitution. Jeers grew louder as Brighton’s struggles continued, building to a crescendo at the final whistle after which some fans called …
