Why ‘psychopath’ is a dangerous label when it comes to criminal justice

Why ‘psychopath’ is a dangerous label when it comes to criminal justice

A defendant stands in the dock. An expert describes them as a “psychopath”. In an instant, one word threatens to eclipse their history, circumstances and the crime itself. In Ireland, England and Wales, judges are not supposed to add years to a sentence because someone has been described as a psychopath. But the label can still enter criminal justice through expert reports, risk assessments, parole, mental disorder cases and preventive detention. In the US, the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) – an assessment tool used for diagnosing psychopathic traits – has been used in death penalty cases, parole hearings, preventive detention and pre-sentence evaluation. These cases usually concern future risk, with evidence most often introduced by the prosecution or state. Research from the US has shown a marked increase in the use of PCL-R over time. The “psychopath” label has been applied in a number of cases involving adolescent offenders, and occasionally raised by the defence, alongside brain-imaging evidence, to argue for reduced culpability or impaired control. In the 1980s case of American serial killer Brian Dugan, …

Ford recall: 420,000 vehicles over dangerous seat belt issue

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Ford is recalling nearly 420,000 vehicles over a critical seat belt defect that could lead to serious injury during a collision. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday that the recall affects specific Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models manufactured between 2018 and 2022. The safety concern centers on seat belts that may unexpectedly lock, preventing them from properly retracting or extending. According to the NHTSA report, a malfunctioning seat belt could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Furthermore, rapid retraction of the seat belt in certain situations also poses a risk of harm to occupants. The latest recall supersedes and broadens two prior NHTSA actions. Ford Motor Co. has acknowledged two warranty claims, two field reports, and one reported injury …

Common asthma drug may reverse dangerous fatty liver disease

Common asthma drug may reverse dangerous fatty liver disease

A medication long used to help people breathe may soon help protect the liver as well. Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina, or MUSC, have discovered that formoterol, a common asthma drug, may reverse key signs of MASH, a dangerous liver disease affecting millions worldwide. MASH, short for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, develops when excess fat builds up in the liver and triggers inflammation and injury. Over time, the disease can scar the liver, cause organ failure and increase the need for transplantation. Cases continue to rise alongside obesity and Type 2 diabetes, creating a growing global health burden. Despite the seriousness of the disease, treatment options remain limited. Researchers say the new findings, published in the journal npj Metabolic Health and Disease, could open the door to a new and potentially faster treatment path because formoterol already has a long safety history in humans. The discovery began almost by accident. Formoterol treatment attenuates steatosis in HFD mice. The dangerous garden weed pet owners should watch out for this summer

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Across much of the United States, spring is in full force. With warmer weather, people are taking their furry family members out on longer walks and spending more time outside. Alongside blooming flowers and trees, your pet might run into a small, unassuming grass seed pod known as a foxtail. Despite the cute name, foxtails can pose a major threat to your pet’s health. I am a veterinarian in California’s Central Valley, and foxtails are a daily issue where I work, especially during the spring and summer months. What exactly are foxtails? A foxtail isn’t a specific plant. It is a type of grass seed pod that resembles a fox’s tail. Multiple species of grass can create this type of seed pod, and foxtails are found across much of the United States. Regions of the western U.S., especially California, have the …

UK council issues urgent warning over dangerous caterpillars | UK | News

Toxic caterpillars whose hairs can trigger breathing problems and painful skin irritation have sparked an urgent public warning after being spotted in Surrey. Woking Borough Council has urged residents to avoid contact with oak processionary moth (OPM) caterpillars and their nests, warning that the insects can pose risks to both people and pets. The caterpillars, which are active between late spring and early summer, are most commonly found on oak trees. While small in size, they are covered in thousands of tiny hairs containing toxins that can cause health problems if touched or inhaled. According to the council, symptoms can include itchy skin rashes, sore throats, eye irritation and breathing difficulties. Residents are being advised not to touch the caterpillars or their nests, to keep children and animals away from affected trees and to avoid attempting to remove nests themselves. The insects can be identified by their distinctive habit of moving in nose-to-tail processions, often travelling in long lines along tree trunks and branches. They also build silky white web-like nests on oak trees. The …

The gloriously gaffe-prone broadcaster, who once told Russell Watson he thought his music was “a bit crap” and said “there are not many better things than seeing an older woman skipping”, headed to El Salvador for the documentary to visit CECOT – a 57-acre prison that’s considered to be the harshest and most controversial in the world. The largest maximum security prison in Latin America, CECOT can hold up to 40,000 inmates, all of whom will spend the rest …

Is Mediocrity More Dangerous Than Ignorance?

Is Mediocrity More Dangerous Than Ignorance?

In a previous post about why educators who promote critical thinking shouldn’t burden themselves with the insurmountable task of getting everyone to think better, I made the point that academics and researchers are not celebrities, regardless of how large their contribution(s) to society. This, of course, is sad when you consider that there are actual celebrities out there who believe the Earth is flat or that rubbing themselves with some gemstone is key to a healthier body. It’s laughable, yes, but at the same time, it’s something of which we should be collectively ashamed. These are the people to whom we’ve provided a platform. Sure, there are a handful of modern academics out there who’ve “made it,” somewhat, in pop culture. For example, I admire the work of Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Brian Cox in bringing their expertise and love of science to the mainstream. But, I wonder, how many people outside of academia could actually name a credible academic? Simply, we need more academic role models. Now, I’m not sure if being smart was …

Doctor Who legend Brian Hodgson: “It’s still dangerous for gay couples to hold hands”

Doctor Who legend Brian Hodgson: “It’s still dangerous for gay couples to hold hands”

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine. When Brian Hodgson joined the BBC in 1960, he found it a progressive environment to work in, even if old-fashioned attitudes were not uncommon. “The head of Programme Operations – a man I respected greatly – said he would never employ any homosexuals,” recalls Hodgson. “Had he stuck to that, he wouldn’t have had a department, because two thirds of us were gay.” By 1963, Hodgson was established as an avant-garde ace at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, creating the sound world of early Doctor Who – from the grating voices of the Daleks to the roar of the Tardis as it tore through time and space. He features in my new book, You Are Not Alone: A Gay History of Doctor Who, whose key contributors also include the original director Waris Hussein, actors Katy Manning, Matt Lucas, Mandip Gill and Matthew Waterhouse, as well as current showrunner Russell T Davies. Published just ahead of Pride Month in the UK, it follows the series’ 63-year timeline to explore …
