Months after the regime crackdown, Iranians search for missing protesters

His family and friends are searching everywhere for him. The official list of detainees does not feature his name. He’s not recorded among the victims identified by the Iranian Legal Medicine Organisation, the forensic department under the country’s justice ministry. Morteza Ebrahimi, 35, has been missing since January 8, a black day for many families across Iran, when the crackdown on anti-regime protests reached a brutal, bloody peak. That night, as internet access was cut across the country, the authorities unleashed hell on the streets of some Tehran neighbourhoods. Special units opened fire with military-grade weapons on protesters in the heart of the Iranian capital. Several thousand people were killed. In the days that followed, families set out to search for their missing loved ones. Many converged on the Kahrizak Forensic Medical Centre, a morgue in Tehran’s southern suburbs where dozens of bodies were brought in by refrigerated lorries. But there was no news, no confirmation, no closure for Ebrahimi’s loved ones. The young man had simply disappeared in the black hole of Iranian people …

Why Jewish values oppose Israel’s unequal death penalty law

Why Jewish values oppose Israel’s unequal death penalty law

(RNS) — Judaism is a religion that values all human life equally. The foundation is written in Genesis 1:27, which states that humans were all created in the image of God. And while all the religions that hold Genesis in their canon of sacred texts differ in interpretation, Judaism is clear that every human life is a world unto itself, a line well known from the Mishnah (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5) quoted in the movie “Schindler’s List.”  So how can it be that lawmakers in Israel — a country that purportedly bases itself on Jewish teachings and values — approved a death penalty law and tribunal that only apply to one class of people? As part of a congregation that lost 11 members in a violent antisemitic attack against our synagogue and two others in Pittsburgh in 2018, I know the pain of loss through terror. But perhaps the best rationale against the death penalty is that given by the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel in a speech at Wesleyan University …

Uganda court sentences man to death for killing four children at nursery | Child Rights News

Christopher Okello Onyum sentenced for fatal stabbing of four children aged between one and three years old. Published On 30 Apr 202630 Apr 2026 A Ugandan court has sentenced a man to death for killing four children at a nursery school, in the capital, Kampala, earlier this month. Christopher Okello Onyum was found guilty of fatally stabbing the children — aged between one and three years old — on April 2. He posed as a parent to gain entry to the nursery school, then locked the gate and carried out the attack in less than seven minutes. An angry crowd of parents attempted to lynch him before a security guard subdued him, police said. The court heard Onyum had searched “schools near me” and “ISIS beheadings” on his mobile phone and laptop in advance of the killings, which the judge said indicated clear preparation for the attack. The court rejected his claim that he was suffering from insanity at the time, with the judge saying the “accurate and precise manner” of the killings demonstrated they …

Trump administration to prioritise seeking death penalty, use firing squads | Donald Trump News

The administration of United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to expand the use of the federal death penalty, including through the deployment of firing squads. The announcement on Friday was part of a policy document issued by the Department of Justice, setting out the legal argument for various methods of execution. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list It touted steps for “restoring and strengthening” the death penalty as integral to the pursuit of justice. “The Department of Justice acted to restore its solemn duty to seek, obtain, and implement lawful capital sentences – clearing the way for the Department to carry out executions once death-sentenced inmates have exhausted their appeals,” the Justice Department said in a news release. While the Eighth Amendment of the US Constitution outlaws “cruel and unusual punishments”, the Justice Department maintains that execution by gunfire, electrocution and lethal gas are all legally acceptable. The policy document also takes aim at Trump’s predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, for implementing a moratorium on the federal executions. “The federal death penalty …

Trump, Iran both share false information about eight women facing execution – Truth or Fake

Trump, Iran both share false information about eight women facing execution – Truth or Fake

On Wednesday, Donald Trump claimed that out of respect for him, Iran had agreed to spare the lives of eight young Iranian women facing execution. But he was quickly struck with accusations that the images of the women were AI-generated. Iran itself gave conflicting information, both mocking the AI claims but also declaring that none of the women faced confirmed death sentences. The reality – as confirmed by two NGOs – is that all parties shared incorrect information.  The US president claimed that the Iranian government agreed to release eight young women facing the death penalty, after being arrested during protests that swept Iran in December and January. His announcement came a day after he’d reposted a photomontage of the women – alongside a claim they faced hanging – as he urged Tehran to release them as a gesture of goodwill ahead of potential peace negotiations. Almost immediately, internet users claimed that the women in the photo did not exist, and that the images were AI-generated. Official Iranian embassy accounts on social media were quick to jump on board with these claims, with many …

Last words of killer who set neighbour on fire ‘this is not right’ | US | News

A death row killer who set his neighbour ablaze more than three decades ago delivered a protest against his death in his final words before execution. Chadwick Scott Willacy was administered a three-drug lethal injection today for the murder of Marlys Sather, who was set alight after returning home to discover the convicted criminal inside her property. Willacy, who had broken in during a chilling burglary, struck her over the head with a blunt object, fracturing her skull, before binding her hands and ankles with wire and tape. Convicted of first-degree murder, burglary, robbery and arson, Willacy spent 36 years on death row in Starke, Florida, before finally being executed today. The 58-year-old offered apologies to his own family and friends and urged his “brothers on the row” to remain strong, yet continued to protest his innocence, insisting he would never have killed his friend. Speaking moments before the lethal injection was administered, Willacy said: “To the victim’s family, I hope this brings you peace. If it does, that’s good. But this is not right.” …

China executes French national convicted in 2010 for drug trafficking

A Frenchman sentenced to death in China in 2010 for drug trafficking has been executed, France’s foreign ministry announced on Saturday. Chan Thao Phoumy, a 62-year-old Frenchman born in Laos, was executed, “despite the efforts of the French authorities, including efforts to obtain a pardon on humanitarian grounds for our compatriot”, said a ministry statement. His defence team did not get access to the final court hearing, in violations of his rights, the ministry added. The sentence was carried out in Guangzhou the south of the country. The ministry reaffirmed France’s opposition to the death penalty “everywhere and in all circumstances” and called for “its universal abolition.” China’s foreign ministry did not comment on the specifics of the case when asked on Sunday about the execution. “Cracking down on drug-related crime is a shared responsibility of all countries,” a statement provided to AFP said. China “treats defendants of different nationalities equally, handles cases strictly and fairly in accordance with the law and protects the lawful rights and treatment of the parties involved”, it said.
