I Just Can’t Decide. What Should I Do?

It’s pretty common in my practice to have clients come in with what feels to them like life-or-death decisions. A medical student is trying to decide whether to do residency in pediatric neurosurgery or psychiatry. He doesn’t want to close the door on working with kids, but he also knows he may have a more flexible schedule as a psychiatrist—and that matters to him if he wants to have his own kids. A single dad is texting with a romantic interest. She doesn’t respond. Should he reach out again? Will she think he’s desperate if he does? Will she disappear if he doesn’t? How do we decide the best path when we are ambivalent? A part of us wants this. A part of us wants that. And we don’t want to miss out on either. When my clients are stuck in the middle and don’t know what to do, I see it as the perfect opportunity for psychological flexibility. Because the truth is, there is no one right path for any of us. No matter …

Iowa Democratic primary could help decide control of the Senate

Iowa Democratic U.S. Senate candidates Josh Turek, left, and Zach Wahls. Getty Images Iowa Democrats on Tuesday are voting in one of the party’s most closely watched primary elections this election year in a key test of the party’s strategy to take control of the Senate in this year’s midterms. Voters will choose between front-runner state Rep. Josh Turek and state Sen. Zach Wahls. Both are vying to become the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate in Iowa since Tom Harkin, who was last elected in 2008. Whoever wins the primary will square off against Rep. Ashley Hinson, a Republican who represents the state’s 2nd congressional district, to fill the seat Sen. Joni Ernst will vacate at the end of this year Hinson also has a primary challenger in Jim Carlin, though she is heavily favored to win. Whoever emerges will have the difficult task of winning in a state that President Donald Trump took by 13 percentage points in 2024, and where there are nearly 200,000 more registered Republican voters than Democrats. Democrats, however, …

Tell us: did you decide to wear a suit rather than a dress to your wedding like Dua Lipa? | Wedding dresses

Dua Lipa got married this weekend in a beautiful outfit that appeared to pay homage to Bianca Jagger’s wedding to Mick Jagger. The singer wore a Schiaparelli couture white skirt suit paired with a Stephen Jones hat as she tied the knot with actor Callum Turner at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London on Sunday. In 1971, Jagger married the Rolling Stones frontman in a Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking jacket and bias-cut skirt, finishing off the look with a floppy hat and veil. We would love to hear from people who were inspired by Bianca Jagger’s wedding outfit and paid homage to it at their own weddings. Why did you decide to wear a suit rather than a traditional dress at your wedding? What do you love about Jagger’s wedding look? Share your experience You can tell us about your wedding suit in the form below or by messaging us.  Your responses, which can be anonymous, are secure as the form is encrypted and only the Guardian has access to your contributions. Here are the big cases the Supreme Court will decide in June

WASHINGTON  — The Supreme Court heads into the final month of its yearly term facing decisions on birthright citizenship, gun rights, transgender athletes and President Trump’s power over independent agencies. Unlike in years past, the term’s most significant rulings were not left for the last week in June. The court dealt Trump a major defeat in February by striking down his sweeping worldwide tariffs. The president is likely to suffer a second defeat when the justices reject his plan to revise the citizenship laws via an executive order. Republicans won when the court struck down a Louisiana congressional district that favored a Black Democrat. That decision has already shifted several congressional districts toward the GOP, but its greatest impact will be seen in 2028 and 2030. Republicans are likely to prevail in two other pending cases. One would free party committees to raise and spend more money to support their candidates. A second would change state laws to bar counting of mail ballots that arrive after election day. The justices have 26 cases waiting to be …

Taiwan leader says ‘foreign forces’ cannot decide island’s future amid China pressure

Taiwan leader says ‘foreign forces’ cannot decide island’s future amid China pressure

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said Wednesday that “foreign forces” cannot decide the future of the democratic island, which relies heavily on US security backing to deter a potential Chinese attack.  Lai’s remarks came days after US President Donald Trump suggested arms sales to Taiwan could be used as a bargaining chip with China, which claims the island is part of its territory and has threatened to seize it by force. “Taiwan’s future cannot be decided by foreign forces, nor can it be held hostage by fear, division, or short-term interests,” Lai said in a speech to mark the second year of his presidency.  Trump’s comments in an interview with Fox News and on board Air Force One followed a state visit to Beijing last week where Chinese President Xi Jinping pressed the US leader not to support Taiwan. Since then, Lai’s government has been on the offensive, insisting that US policy on Taiwan has not changed and that Trump made no commitments to China on arms sales to the island. Taipei says China is the “root cause” of regional instability …

Americans Are Using ‘Inflation Math’ To Decide Which Foods Are Still Worth The Price

Americans Are Using ‘Inflation Math’ To Decide Which Foods Are Still Worth The Price

We’ve heard of girl math and girl dinner. Now, there’s a new formula affecting how we live our day-to-day lives: NPR reported that rising prices at restaurants are leading more people to dine at home. The cost of eating a meal at a restaurant has gone up by 4.1% over the past year. Grocery prices have increased, too, but by a significantly smaller percentage: 1.1%. Since 2020, the cost of groceries has gone up by 19% while restaurant prices have gone up by 24%. Inflation math is changing the way people eat Americans are affected by these rising costs, and they’re choosing to make more frugal decisions People are cutting back on eating at restaurants and putting the money they save toward their grocery bill. It’s not just fancy sit-down restaurants that are losing customers; fast-food restaurants are also taking a hit. McDonald’s had their first decline in sales since restaurants closed completely in 2020, falling by almost 1% between April and June of 2024. The change in Americans’ consumption patterns has fast-food places reimagining …

What the jury will actually decide in the case of Elon Musk vs. Sam Altman

What the jury will actually decide in the case of Elon Musk vs. Sam Altman

Nine California jurors are now deliberating over the future of OpenAI, the world-leading artificial intelligence lab. While the trial exploring Elon Musk’s case against OpenAI’s other cofounders and Microsoft has covered territory ranging from the breakup of the founders in 2018 to Altman’s firing and rehiring in 2023, the jurors will be considering a set of fairly narrow questions. Breach of charitable trust — essentially, did OpenAI and cofounders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman violate a specific agreement with Musk to use his donations to OpenAI for a specific, charitable purpose and not general use by the non-profit? Unjust enrichment — did the defendants use Musk’s donations to enrich themselves through OpenAI’s for-profit arm, instead of for charitable purposes? Aiding and abetting breach of charitable trust — Did Microsoft, through its interactions with OpenAI, know that Musk had specific conditions on its donations, and play a significant role in causing harm to Musk? OpenAI has also made three arguments in its defense that the jury will weigh: Statute of limitations — a legal deadline by which a lawsuit …

The Welsh Conservatives survived the Senedd election – now they must decide what they stand for

The Welsh Conservatives survived the Senedd election – now they must decide what they stand for

The 2026 Senedd (Welsh parliament) election has transformed Welsh politics. Much of the attention has focused on the rise of Plaid Cymru and Reform UK, and on Welsh Labour’s dramatic losses. But another political story has unfolded more quietly in the background. The Welsh Conservatives achieved 10.7% of the vote, giving them seven seats in the expanded 96-member Senedd. In the 2021 Senedd election, the party won 16 seats out of a possible 60. On paper, that is a poor result for a party that once aspired to lead the Welsh government. But given the political circumstances facing the Conservatives in Wales, there are reasons why the party may regard the outcome as better than many had feared – and why their attention may now turn to where they stand on Welsh devolution. To understand this, it is important to view Conservative politics in Wales through a different lens from the rest of the UK. At Westminster level, the Conservatives have historically been one of the UK’s most successful electoral machines. In Wales, however, the …

Supreme Court To Decide Whether Colorado Can Deny Funding For Catholic Preschools

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy, a significant religious liberty case that pits Colorado’s universal preschool funding program against Catholic schools’ faith-based admissions and operational policies. Earlier this week, the Court granted certiorari in an unsigned order (no dissents noted), limiting review to two questions from the petitioners’ November 2025 petition. Arguments are expected in the Court’s October 2026 term. The Supreme Court building in Washington on April 13, 2026. Madalina Kilroy/The Epoch Times In 2020, Colorado voters approved Proposition EE, creating dedicated funding for voluntary universal preschool. The state’s Early Childhood Act and related rules established the UPK program, which provides free preschool (initially 15 hours per week, later expanded in some descriptions) to families at participating public, private, or faith-based providers. The goal: expand access and choice for all families, including through private options. To participate and receive taxpayer funds, preschools must sign a nondiscrimination agreement. It requires offering “equal opportunity” to enroll and serve children regardless of race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity, …
