COLUMBUS, Ohio — The bitter divorce between an Ohio congressman and his former wife, the daughter of one of the state’s U.S. senators, has escalated into new legal action. Republican U.S. Rep. Max Miller filed a defamation lawsuit against Emily Moreno, his one-time spouse, on Wednesday in Cleveland, citing “the considerable reputational and financial harm” caused to him by her accusations that he was “a violent and abusive husband and father.” Miller, a two-term congressman up for reelection this fall, alleges that Moreno, her attorney Andrew Zashin and his law firm have engaged in a defamatory campaign against him by spreading knowingly false information about him to media outlets including the Daily Mail, a British tabloid, and the New York Post. The action contends that the resulting damage to his reputation undermines his chances of reelection. Those outlets have “circulation measured in the tens of millions of print and online readership,” the complaint states, and their articles have been read, viewed or discussed by Miller’s constituents, his congressional colleagues, ”his political supporters and donors, the media, and …
FBI Director Kash Patel testifies before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S., March 18, 2026. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters FBI Director Kash Patel on Thursday filed an appeal of the recent dismissal of his defamation lawsuit against former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi. Patel had sued Figliuzzi in Houston federal court, alleging that the former FBI counterintelligence assistant director defamed him in a May 2, 2025, interview on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” by saying Patel had “been visible at nightclubs far more than he has been on the seventh floor of” FBI headquarters. U.S. District Court Judge George Hanks Jr., in his April 21 decision dismissing Patel’s lawsuit, said that Figliuzzi’s statement was “rhetorical hyperbole that cannot constitute defamation.” “Accordingly, Dir. Patel has failed to state a claim against Figliuzzi, and his lawsuit must be dismissed,” Hanks wrote. Hanks dismissed Patel’s suit a day after the FBI director filed an unrelated $250 million defamation lawsuit in D.C. federal court against The Atlantic magazine. The suit relates to an Atlantic article …
NEW YORK — President Trump won’t have to pay an $83-million defamation award to a longtime advice columnist until the U.S. Supreme Court gets a chance to review the case or reject an appeal, according to a court entry Tuesday. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to a request by one of Trump’s lawyers to let the president delay the payment to E. Jean Carroll, though it required that Trump post a $7.4-million bond to cover any additional interest costs, a request Carroll’s attorney had made. The appeals court late last month refused Trump’s request for a rare meeting of the full 2nd Circuit to hear an appeal of a three-judge panel’s affirmation of the January 2024 verdict. Afterward, Trump attorney Justin D. Smith asked the 2nd Circuit to stay the effect of its decision upholding the award so that the president would not be forced to pay the judgment before the high court has a chance to consider an appeal. Smith said last week there was a “fair prospect” that the Supreme Court will …

FBI Director Kash Patel filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic on Monday, claiming the magazine’s recent exposé on his time as agency director was a malicious “hit piece.” The piece, published by the outlet last week, painted Patel’s tenure as run through with extended, “unexplained absences.” Citing interviews with dozens of FBI insiders, reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick called the director “erratic, suspicious of others, and prone to jumping to conclusions before he has necessary evidence” and shared that his “drinking has been a recurring source of concern across the government.” Patel threatened to sue The Atlantic over the claims prior to the article’s publication, daring the magazine to “print it” in a statement that was included in the final story. “All false, I’ll see you in court—bring your checkbook,” he said. Patel’s defamation suit accuses The Atlantic of “actual malice,” a legal test that needs to be met for public officials to successfully prove they’ve been libeled. That notoriously difficult standard requires the plaintiff to show that the publisher knew its claims were …
