Tesla ‘FSD’ approved in Denmark, 4th European country in 2 months

Tesla ‘FSD’ approved in Denmark, 4th European country in 2 months

Denmark has provisionally approved Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” (Supervised) system, making it the fourth European country to clear the software in roughly eight weeks. The Danish Road Traffic Authority, Færdselsstyrelsen, confirmed the decision today — notably after Denmark had previously raised concerns about the technology at the EU level. Denmark accepts Dutch approval after its own review Færdselsstyrelsen said it accepted the provisional type approval originally issued by the Dutch vehicle authority, RDW, on April 10. But the Danish authority stressed it conducted its own independent review before signing off. “After a thorough review and assessment of the technical documentation, Færdselsstyrelsen agrees with RDW’s assessment that the system will contribute positively to road safety by assisting the driver while driving,” the authority said in its official statement. The driver is still fully responsible for driving.” Denmark joins the Netherlands, Lithuania, and Estonia in clearing the system through national recognition of the Dutch …

US secretary of state Marco Rubio says Greenland is part of Denmark ‘for now’

US secretary of state Marco Rubio says Greenland is part of Denmark ‘for now’

“For now.” That’s how US secretary of state Marco Rubio responded when asked whether he was “aware that Greenland is indeed part of Denmark” during questioning by Congress. It was asked by Sarah McBride of the House of Representatives’ foreign affairs committee, who grilled Mr Rubio over Donald Trump‘s repeated pronouncements that the US should take control of the island. Mr Trump has long advocated for the mineral-rich, self-governing Danish territory to become part of the US and hasn’t ruled out using military force. Such action would create an existential crisis for the NATO alliance, of which America and Denmark are members. He has claimed the Danish military is incapable of defending Greenland from the likes of Russia and China, even though there are already US forces stationed there. Ms McBride asked Mr Rubio if the US “needs to own land within NATO to defend it”. He replied: “We are actually ‌involved in conversations with Greenland and Denmark on the use of Greenland for collective defence for all of us. It’s a key part of …

Danish PM Frederiksen secures third term with new coalition government

Danish PM Frederiksen secures third term with new coalition government

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Monday she had managed to form a left-leaning minority coalition government following months of talks after inconclusive elections in March. “A government was able to be formed, after long negotiations,” she told reporters after meeting with the country’s King Frederik X. A statement from the palace said the coalition would consist of Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, the Socialist People’s Party, the centre-left Radikale Venstre and the centrist Moderates. It marks a third term as premier for Frederiksen, 48, who in January stood up to US President Donald Trump against his threats to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Frederiksen said she would present her political programme on Tuesday, and on Wednesday the new cabinet. Neither the left nor the right bloc won a majority in the March 24 election, which left parliament splintered. The four parties in the new coalition between them hold 82 of the 179 seats in parliament. Media reported that a separate alliance of leftists and greens could support the coalition. Norway joins France’s nuclear deterrence club – POLITICO

“Russia’s largest nuclear arsenal is located in the High North, just a few kilometers from Norway,” he said, adding that Norway would continue to primarily rely on NATO for its security. On March 2, the French president announced that Germany, Poland, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden had agreed to discuss nuclear cooperation with Paris. That could include joint nuclear drills, information sharing and, ultimately, the potential temporary deployment of French nuclear-capable Rafale fighter jets in allied countries — a concept the French called “forward nuclear deterrence.” Since then, highly classified talks about exactly what the cooperation will entail have already begun with some nations, two officials told POLITICO. On Wednesday, Paris and Oslo also signed a wide-ranging bilateral defense and security deal — dubbed the Narvik agreement — that includes a mutual assistance clause, more dialogue between their armed forces and cooperation on air defense, space and Arctic security, Macron said. In the past few years, the French president has sought to increase his country’s defense ties with Nordic countries, including Denmark, Finland …

EU’s net payers prepare revolt as €1.8 trillion budget takes shape – POLITICO

In addition to Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Ireland and Belgium are expected to be represented in the talks, which are being held ahead of a General Affairs Council in Brussels where the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework (long-term budget) is to be debated. But a rival camp of 16 countries — including Italy, Spain and Poland — are pushing back on the mooted cuts. They argue that spending on agriculture, payments to poorer regions and fishing must be increased from the Commission’s budget proposal, where they make up less than half of total spending. “In the Commission’s proposal, Cohesion Policy, CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) and the CFP (Common fisheries policy) are the only policies facing reductions in real terms, despite the overall increase in the size of the new MFF,” the countries wrote in a joint statement on Monday evening that was coordinated by Romania. Signatories include Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. Swedish European Affairs Minister Jessica Rosencrantz talks to …

Dutch government gives green light to establish migrant ‘return hubs’ outside EU – POLITICO

Dutch government gives green light to establish migrant ‘return hubs’ outside EU – POLITICO

Return hubs are a controversial element in a major migration reform presented last year by the European Commission under pressure from right-wing governments around the bloc. The idea is to avoid having migrants remain in a country where they have been refused asylum for extended periods because their host country won’t readmit them or for other reasons. Setting up centers to process asylum applications outside the EU follows a similar logic — prioritizing migrants for entry whose applications have been approved. The first non-EU return hub, whose location has yet to be announced amid ongoing talks with several non-EU governments, would likely be used not just by the Netherlands but also by Greece, Germany, Austria and Denmark, all countries that have backed a push to crack down on migration into the EU. The Netherlands is working with Denmark, Malta and Sweden on options for processing asylum applications outside Europe, per an EU diplomat who was granted anonymity to discuss the plans. Italy has had a similar arrangement with Albania since late 2023, but Rome’s setup …

Denmark’s Frederiksen gets a second chance to form next government – POLITICO

Danish caretaker Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced a new round of talks to form the next government would begin Sunday after she was reappointed by the king to lead the coalition negotiations. Denmark’s royal household on Saturday issued a statement saying that King Frederik X “requested acting Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to lead negotiations on forming a government.” Frederiksen failed to form a new coalition in the first round of negotiations before handing over to Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, leader of the center-right Venstre party. Poulsen announced late Friday that the talks broke down. “I did my best. … Now I’m going home to recharge. And yes … maybe mow some grass instead of untangling political knots,” Lund Poulsen said in a post on Instagram that included an image of him beside his lawn mower. Frederiksen’s Social Democrats secured the most votes in the parliamentary election on March 24, but the party fell far short of a majority in the Folketing, the Danish parliament. The negotiations have since been deadlocked, continuing for 60 days and …

US strengthens Greenland presence with new consulate – POLITICO

During his second presidency, the American leader has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Greenland, without excluding the use of military force. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded in January that taking Greenland would end NATO. In December last year, Trump appointed U.S. Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, sparking strong condemnations from both Denmark and the European Commission after Landry suggested his role was “to make Greenland a part of the U.S.” Although Trump has since walked back claims of annexing the island, his administration is trying to increase its influence. Former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen told POLITICO at the GLOBSEC Forum on Thursday that the United States and Denmark were working to increase US military presence on Greenland through “a more classical diplomatic path.” “We would welcome that,” Rasmussen said, referring to the military expansion. This week, Landry visited Greenland alongside U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery, meeting with the island’s top officials. Howery will inaugurate the new consulate alongside the U.S. Consul in Nuuk, Susan Wilson, according to local …
