How Should a Pixel Be? | Dennis Lim

By certain measures, it has never been easier to make a film. Cameras are more accessible than ever: smaller, cheaper, more portable and powerful. Over the past decade the phone—the word we still use for what is now chiefly a conduit of AI slop and misinformation, an instrument for doomscrolls and dopamine hits—has assumed prominence as a tool of feature filmmaking. This development dates more or less to the 2015 launch of Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign, a promotional barrage of user-generated imagery meant to alert consumers to the state-of-the-art technology in their pockets. That same year the American independent filmmaker Sean Baker premiered his comedy caper Tangerine, shot on an iPhone 5s, at Sundance, aligning the emerging category of the cell phone movie with a tradition of scrappy, low-budget ingenuity. Steven Soderbergh, himself synonymous with an earlier era of indie resourcefulness, followed suit, shooting Unsane (2018) on the iPhone 7 Plus and High Flying Bird (2019) on the iPhone 8. Some of today’s most interesting films are shot on such devices, under circumstances that …

Australian Dennis criticises media portrayal following wife’s death

Australian Dennis criticises media portrayal following wife’s death

April 7 : Former cycling world champion Rohan Dennis said the media had created a false narrative about him after the Australian received a suspended jail sentence last year over the death of his wife. Melissa Hoskins, an Olympic track cyclist and former world champion, died after being struck by a car driven by Dennis in an inner northern suburb of Adelaide in 2023. The court had heard how she held on to the car as he attempted to drive off following an argument, causing her to fall. Dennis had admitted to an aggravated count of creating the likelihood of harm, and the judge said that although he had disregarded his wife’s safety he was not criminally responsible for her death. He was sentenced to one year, four months and 28 days in jail, suspended for two years, and his driver’s licence was suspended for five years. In a statement on social media, Dennis said he loved his wife and never intended to hurt her. “The narrative which the media ran with was clear. They …

Dennis Quaid’s ‘heart breaks every time’ he thinks of Parent Trap co-star Natasha Richardson

Dennis Quaid has admitted his “heart breaks every time” he thinks of his late The Parent Trap co-star Natasha Richardson. The actor, 71, became emotional while reflecting on the actress – who died aged 45 after suffering a brain bleed following a skiing accident in 2009 – and the memories they shared while filming the beloved 1998 movie.  “My heart breaks every time,” Dennis revealed during a new episode of the Out of Order podcast after watching one of their scenes together. “Natasha… she was just an incredible person and amazing.” In the film, Natasha played Elizabeth James, a wedding dress designer who unexpectedly rekindles her romance with her ex-husband Nick Parker, portrayed by Dennis, after their twin daughters, Hallie and Annie – both played by Lindsay Lohan – meet at summer camp and secretly swap places.  Reflecting on the experience, Dennis added that working alongside Natasha was so special that, “If there’s anybody I’d ever want to work with again, it’d be her.”  WATCH: Dennis Quaid says he still misses Parent Trap co-star Natasha …
