CNBC A judge on Wednesday dismissed Donald Trump’s lawsuit accusing The Des Moines Register and its former pollster of misrepresenting the state of the 2024 presidential race, rejecting the president’s claim that the newspaper’s poll coverage violated Iowa’s consumer fraud law. Iowa District Judge Scott J. Beattie sided with pollster J. Ann Selzer and the Register, who described the lawsuit as a conspiracy theory and an affront to free speech protections. The judge wrote that Trump’s suit sought to “stretch both Iowa statutory and common law beyond their current bounds, turning speech that enjoys the highest category of First Amendment protection into a liability.” After hearing the arguments, the judge concluded the constitutional protection “is too great and the reach is too far. The case must therefore be dismissed.” Trump and his team have filed several lawsuits against media organizations accusing them of bias, calling into question the boundaries of First Amendment protections for speech and press. A shark will be ‘destroyed’ after it attacked and killed a swimmer, 63, on Friday as police continue to hunt for its victim’s body. Emergency services raced to Sorrento beach, in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia (WA), at 10:15am local time on Friday (September 18). The shark attacked two swimmers around 15 metres from the shore and ‘mauled’ one who has not been since. Police have now confirmed they believe the missing man has died. A WA Police spokesperson told the Daily Mail: “The 63-year-old male swimmer has not been located. Police conducted a search of the shoreline this morning (Saturday). “A WA Police Force Water Police vessel will remain in the area today, weather permitting. Beaches in the area remain closed.” It’s thought the man was a member of a local surfing club and was with a friend when they were attacked. Des Conway’s disability bus pass was usually renewed every five years. But when he got his last one, he noticed that it would expire less than six months later. “I couldn’t understand why they’d only give it to me for less than a year,” he says. He soon realised that the expiry date listed on the card was his 66th birthday, April 6 – the exact date he’d officially become an old age pensioner – and began to put two and two together. His pass was going to be replaced by a pensioner’s one instead – meaning he’d no longer be eligible to travel for free before 9.30am in the morning on weekdays. “This is discriminatory,” Des wrote in a letter to Nottingham City Council, asking them to reinstate disability passes. In 2015, I was on a panel at New York’s Museum of Arts and Design titled “Do We Need Exhibitions Just for Women?” As I remember, most of the participants agreed that we did, though some expressed concerns about ghettoization or weariness at having a conversation they’d had many times before. As the youngest participant, I understood their frustration, but I had no doubt that the answer was an emphatic yes. It seemed obvious that as long as we had gender inequality, we also needed correctives. Asking myself the same question today, I’m still inclined to answer in the affirmative, but with markedly less gusto. Over the last decade I’ve witnessed the ways that progress can seem linear only to suddenly loop back on itself. Women face increased misogyny and discrimination in many places, including the US. Even in the art world, the situation is retrograde: a 2022 report by the journalists Charlotte Burns and Julia Halperin found that only 11 percent of acquisitions and 14.9 percent of exhibitions at thirty-one American museums were devoted …
