IDF soldier’s destruction of Jesus statue triggers Poland-Israel spat – POLITICO

IDF soldier’s destruction of Jesus statue triggers Poland-Israel spat – POLITICO

“IDF soldiers themselves admit to war crimes. They killed not only civilian Palestinians but even their own hostages,” the center-right politician continued. Sikorski’s criticism seemed to add fresh fuel to the dispute. “What you wrote reflects ignorance and a deep lack of understanding,” Sa’ar responded on X on Monday. The IDF is a “professional and ethical army,” the minister added, and “there is no Western military that fights terrorism more precisely, or on the basis of better intelligence, than the IDF.” The Israeli foreign ministry confirmed it had completed an initial investigation into the act and that “appropriate measures” would be taken against “those involved,” adding that the statue would be restored to its original location. Patriarch of Jerusalem Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa also condemned the images as “a grave affront to the Christian faith,” calling for “disciplinary actions” against the perpetrator. The spat comes as tensions between Israel and the EU continue to escalate, with even traditional European allies of Israel voicing criticism of its treatment of Palestinians. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was “deeply concerned about …

Scalable PFAS destruction using advanced UV technology

Scalable PFAS destruction using advanced UV technology

Water Illumination is advancing a modular UV platform for complete PFAS destruction under ambient conditions Per -and polyfluoroakyl substances (PFAS) have rapidly evolved from an emerging contaminant concern into a central regulatory and public health priority. With binding limits now established in the United States and regulatory frameworks expanding across Europe and Asia, utilities and industrial operators are reaching a critical inflection point. For decades, the prevailing treatment model has relied on adsorption and separation technologies such as granular activated carbon (GAC), ion exchange (IX), and reverse osmosis (RO). While effective at removing PFAS from water, these systems do not eliminate the compounds. Instead, they transfer contaminants into secondary waste streams that require regeneration, incineration, or disposal. As regulatory scrutiny intensifies, the limitations of this containment-based approach are becoming increasingly visible. Disposal costs are rising, liability exposure is expanding, and the long-term fate of concentrated PFAS residuals remains uncertain. The sector is therefore shifting from a philosophy of containment towards one of permanent destruction. Water Illumination Inc., based in California, is advancing a scalable ultraviolet …

Perma-Fix’s PFAS waste/product destruction technology

Perma-Fix’s PFAS waste/product destruction technology

Perma-Fix has leveraged advanced monitoring techniques and partnerships with universities to develop a patented hydrolytic chemical destruction technology that effectively eliminates over 99.99% of PFAS Perma-Fix has patented and commercialised a hydrolytic chemical destruction treatment for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that achieves greater than 99.99% destruction of both short- and long-chain PFAS. The commercial-scale liquid waste batch reactor operates at lower temperatures and pressures compared to alternative chemical destruction technologies. This technology has been proven effective for a variety of short- and long-chain PFAS and for low-concentration liquid wastes as well as concentrated products such as AFFF, with concentrations up to 15,000 to 30,000 parts per million (ppm) of PFAS pre-treatment. Innovative treatment process The process destruction reaction is monitored using Fluorine Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (19F NMR) to monitor destruction kinetics down to less than 1 ppm. Perma-Fix uses a combination of internal analytical equipment and external validation through partnerships with the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. PFAS destruction efficiency has also been confirmed through third-party commercial laboratory analysis for …

A 12-hour drive through Iran offers glimpses of destruction, defiance and daily life

A 12-hour drive through Iran offers glimpses of destruction, defiance and daily life

ZANJAN, Iran — A black banner hung over the border crossing and portraits of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stared down, promising vengeance against the United States and Israel. But on the 12-hour drive south to the capital, Tehran, daily life continued, with only occasional signs of the ongoing war, including a Shiite religious center that officials say was damaged by a recent airstrike. Associated Press reporters made the journey on Saturday after crossing into Iran from Turkey. They gained a glimpse of the country at the center of a regional war that has jolted the world economy and shows no sign of ending five weeks after Khamenei was killed in the opening U.S. and Israeli salvo. The Associated Press was granted permission by the Iranian government to send an additional team into the country for a brief reporting trip. (AP already operates in Iran.) Tehran said the visiting team had to be accompanied by a fixer from a government-affiliated company. But AP retains full editorial control of its content. A religious center damaged by …

Global Demand Destruction: Subsidies, Empty Gas Stations, Rationing, Flight Cancelations, Export Limits, Price Controls

Global Demand Destruction: Subsidies, Empty Gas Stations, Rationing, Flight Cancelations, Export Limits, Price Controls

In the past two weeks we have discussed demand destruction as a result of soaring oil prices (here and here), and we are increasingly seeing anecdotal evidence of just that (here is a table from Goldman we showed previously, laying out where demand destruction is most acute). We start, as always, with Asia which has emerged as ground zero of the global energy crisis – as a reminder last week we first presented a map by JPMorgan’s resident commodity expert who how the shockwave from the Iran war spreads across the world, hitting Asia first, then Africa and Europe, before settling on the US, but mostly California. Source According to UBS, a shortage of jet fuel in Asia and very high prices for what is available are now leading to greater flight cancellations. European jet fuel trades around $1713/tonne, up 114% since the war began. Singapore fuel is up around 140%. Both Vietnam Airlines and Air New Zealand have had to cancel flights due to limited fuel supply. Let’s go down the list. 1. Panic buying …

Mutually Assured Energy Destruction – The Atlantic

Mutually Assured Energy Destruction – The Atlantic

A few years ago in Dhahran, the Saudi state oil company, Aramco, gave me a tour of its headquarters, a facility so sparkling and orderly that one could forget that its whole purpose was to extract from the ground one of the filthiest substances on Earth. The most impressive stop on the tour was the Aramco emergency command center, which I imagine is paying its workers a lot of overtime right now. It looked like the control room for a mission to Alpha Centauri. Men and women sat at their stations. The walls were aglow with constellations of green lights—each one, my host said, representing a functioning object in the Aramco galaxy of pipelines, valves, ships, buses, heat exchangers, and drill bits. If a light flashed red, it meant one of these objects was broken, and the people at those stations would vault into action to support the crew restoring it. One major question in the current war is why Iran has so far failed, or perhaps declined, to make life miserable for the people …

Fears Israel could replicate its ‘Gaza model’ in Lebanon as satellite imagery captures mounting destruction

Fears Israel could replicate its ‘Gaza model’ in Lebanon as satellite imagery captures mounting destruction

Bridges blown up. Homes destroyed. More than 1 million people displaced. And plans for Israeli control over a vast swath of territory for an indefinite period. Fears over Israel’s vow to model its invasion of southern Lebanon after its yearslong, deadly military offensive in Gaza are being increasingly voiced as satellite imagery shows the intensifying destruction in the country’s south — and a growing number of Israeli military bases established in the area. Aid workers on the ground have described a spiraling humanitarian situation with no end in sight after Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced this week his country would be establishing a “security zone” in southern Lebanon and taking control of key river crossings, leaving hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes indefinitely. Humanitarian groups have warned of whole residential areas being destroyed as they sound the alarm over the mounting destruction and rising death toll in Lebanon.Hussein Malla / AP Katz compared Israel’s …
