Pride review, National Theatre – Devastating, uplifting musical is much better than the film that inspired it

Set in 1984, during the height of the miners’ strike, the true-life story follows a group of London-based gay activists who start raising funds to support a Welsh mining community, having realised they have enemies in common (ie, Margaret Thatcher and the right-wing press). Pride, produced by P&P Productions with the National Theatre, transcends its source material in most every way: it’s funnier, more moving, and more joyous than the film. (Both incarnations are directed by Matthew Warchus.) It also – crucially – feels more queer. My big gripe with the film was that it seemed designed with a straight audience in mind: for a tale about people living radically unconventional lives, it was stubbornly traditional in its form. House of the Dragon star reacts to season 3’s devastating death

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 3 episode 1. Another devastating death has befallen House of the Dragon in the very first episode of season 3. Buckle in, it’s a big one. The long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, which was delayed after initially being planned as the climax to season 2, took no prisoners, as the Triarchy, led by Admiral Lohar (Abigail Thorne) and the Velaryon fleet, led by the Sea Snake (Steve Toussaint), rained fire over the seas. Meanwhile, with Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett) convinced that his mother, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), was about to land herself in a trap, he took matters into his own hands, locking her in and preventing her from going to war, before joining the fray himself. But it was an ill-fated decision from Jace. After joining the battle, he rides his dragon Vermax just a little too low, and the dragon is hit and crashes into the sea. Although Jace survives the drop, managing to cling to debris, he’s then hit by enemy arrows, …

Bigfoot Documentary’s Devastating Debunking | Skeptical Inquirer

Bigfoot Documentary’s Devastating Debunking | Skeptical Inquirer

The most famous film of Bigfoot has been conclusively revealed as a hoax in a new documentary film, Capturing Bigfoot. The iconic 1967 footage taken in Bluff Creek, California, by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin is said to show a female Bigfoot (dubbed “Patty”) walking across a riverbed. The 16-mm film has been the subject of controversy and debate for half a century and is routinely cited as the gold standard for Bigfoot footage (even some fifty-five years later, which is deeply suspicious given the ubiquity of high-quality smartphone cameras since then). Though the footage is blurry, one thing is clear: it’s either a hoax or a Bigfoot. It’s not an optical illusion, misidentified bear, or anything else. It is no exaggeration to say that the film is a foundational pillar of modern Bigfoot belief. Sure, there are plenty of anecdotal sighting reports (typically at dusk and from great distances), ambiguous tracks, “strange” calls in the forest at night, and so on. But nothing compares to the Patterson/Gimlin film for sheer pop culture influence. Its …

“The Impact was Devastating”: Chicago’s Cross-Burning Was Set By Liberal, Anti-Trump Protester

“The Impact was Devastating”: Chicago’s Cross-Burning Was Set By Liberal, Anti-Trump Protester

Authored by Jonathan Turley, After the Southern Poverty Law Center scandal of actually funding and encouraging racist protests, it appears that at least one individual has created his own orchestrated racist incident. In Chicago (where Jussie Smollett committed his infamous racist hoax), a burning cross was denounced by Mayor Brandon Johnson as a sign of the racism in society. Johnson, however, refused to address the fact that the cross burning was actually the work of an anti-Trump liberal student. University of Illinois senior Merlin Lu said it was never intended as a racist symbol, but the question is whether it could still be charged as a hate crime. In posting a reward for the culprit soon after the incident, Rev. Michael Pfleger declared that “this bold rise of racism must be condemned by every race, faith community, and Chicagoan as was done with the swastika and treated as a hate crime.” It turns out that this was not evidence of the rise of racism but another possible hoax. Lu bizarrely claimed that he was unaware that a burning …

‘Devastating’: ‘Raising Kanan’ Star Patina Miller, Sascha Penn Break Down Shocking Death

This article contains spoilers for the Season 5 premiere of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. Fans have always known that Kanan Stark was a loner, but with the closeout season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, it’s becoming clearer and clearer how he got there. The series ended its fourth season with a blank screen and a gunshot, leaving viewers wondering if Kanan (MeKai Curtis) shot his mother, Raq (Patina Miller), or if something else happened after their charged confrontation.  Now back with the premiere for its fifth and final season, the show sealed the fate of one of its characters, Lou Thomas, played by Malcolm Mays. In a gut-wrenching opening scene, Kanan accidentally shoots his Uncle Lou-Lou, who moved to stop his bodyguard from shooting at Kanan. Lou, bleeding, looks starkly at his nephew before he drops to the floor. In a blink, Raq rushes to him, but he dies in his sister’s arms. Make no mistake: This death sets the tone for the rest of season 5, and Miller shared how it felt …

Timothée Chalamet exited through the same tunnel and was also hooting and hollering with his fellow Knicks fans. Earlier, the video screen had shown him looking shocked, his hands on his face — just like the 19,000 others who bore witness at the Garden that night. The Knicks had just pulled off the impossible. They had trailed by 27 at halftime, 29 at one point in the third quarter, 15 entering the fourth quarter and 11 with about six minutes remaining. At the end of the fourth, down by 1, Jalen Brunson launched a 30-foot 3-pointer, which missed and bounced into the air. The Garden went quiet for a …
