British Museum Evacuated After Suspicious Device Found, Police Find No Threat

The British Museum was briefly evacuated Saturday after staff discovered what was described as a “suspicious device” inside a restroom, prompting a police response at one of the world’s most visited museums. The Metropolitan Police were called to the museum’s Bloomsbury headquarters around 2:50 p.m. local time after reports of a suspicious package, according to The Independent. Officers investigated the object and later determined it posed no threat. Visitors were allowed back into the museum shortly after 4 p.m. and normal operations resumed. Related Articles In a statement, the museum said it had also received what it described as “malicious communications” before the evacuation. “The safety and security of our visitors, colleagues and volunteers is always our highest priority,” a museum spokesperson told The Independent, thanking visitors and staff for their cooperation during the evacuation. The museum declined to elaborate on the nature of the communications, citing the ongoing police matter. The incident unfolded at one of Britain’s busiest cultural institutions. The British Museum welcomed more than six million visitors last year, making it one of the most visited museums …

A United Airlines flight from Newark, N.J., to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, pulled a U-turn late Saturday over what appears to have been a suspiciously named Bluetooth device on board. Flight tracking data shows that the flight, which should have landed in Spain after a nearly eight-hour flight, instead returned to Newark after 4 hours and 24 minutes in the air. United Airlines told NPR via email that the flight turned around “to address a potential security concern.” Multiple posts on social media from self-identified passengers indicate that the problem was a Bluetooth device on board the plane. Several of those passengers posted photos or videos of them on board the flight or in the airport, with timestamps that match the flight’s actual schedule. Some passengers knew little …

CPAP Insurance Rules Too Stringent, Deny Device Coverage To Sleep Apnea Patients Who Would Benefit

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay ReporterTHURSDAY, May 21, 2026 (HealthDay News) — It’s notoriously difficult for some sleep apnea patients to adapt to using a CPAP machine – but most will and should be given the chance before insurance companies cut off coverage for the devices, a new study says. Despite not meeting Medicare requirements that would have ended coverage, more than one-third of patients still use their CPAP machines enough to sleep better and become healthier, researchers reported Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Thoracic Society in Orlando. “These findings challenge a long-standing assumption in clinical practice and policy,” said lead researcher Dr. Dennis Hwang, a sleep and pulmonary doctor at Kaiser Permanente Southern California in Yorba Linda. “While clinicians know some patients take time to adapt, the scale of continued use we observed in those that did not initially meet Medicare adherence was striking,” Hwang said in a news release. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines deliver a steady stream of pressurized air through a mask to prevent a person’s airways from …

I switched one USB policy setting in Device Manager and my file transfer speeds doubled

I switched one USB policy setting in Device Manager and my file transfer speeds doubled

I had noticed a strange occurrence when transferring large files on an external drive. The copy speeds start quite high, sometimes above 300MB/s, but end up collapsing to a crawl. I was seeing really chaotic-looking progress graphs, and transfers that should have taken minutes ended up taking longer. I wasted time changing the enclosure, cables, and even blamed thermals, but the real cause turned out to be a USB policy that had been the default since 2018. It only took making one switch in Device Manager for my file transfers to be cut in half. They became more predictable. Windows changed this default for a good reason Most people never safely eject drives — Microsoft stopped assuming they would Afam Onyimadu / MUO Before Windows 10 version 1809 — when Microsoft introduced the policy update that caused this problem — removable drives relied on write caching. This allowed the OS to put temporary holds on writes coming into memory and flush them in efficient batches to the drive. This was a faster approach, but it …

Midlife women say this ‘powerful’ at-home device tightens saggy skin in just 10 minutes – but does it work?

Midlife women say this ‘powerful’ at-home device tightens saggy skin in just 10 minutes – but does it work?

In recent years, we’ve watched facial aesthetics boom: anti-wrinkle injections (A.K.A Botox), dermal fillers and skin boosters are all commonplace in clinics, and research suggests that as many as 26% of women have dabbled in tweakments.  But what about aesthetic treatments for the body? Well, it turns out, this segment of the industry is catching up with its facial counterpart. AT A GLANCE A growing number of midlife women are using at-home body contouring devices  Magnitone’s Diablo Pro has gained a cult following for how ‘powerful’ it is at tightening sagging skin The handheld device can improve skin laxity in as little as six weeks if you use it for 10 minutes a day Treatments designed to tighten, tone and sculpt the body are becoming increasingly popular in clinics across the UK. But there’s a catch: they’re often expensive and time-consuming.  As a result, more women (particularly those in midlife) are turning to at-home devices that promise professional-style body contouring results. And one brand helping drive this shift is Magnitone. Magnitone’s Diablo Pro is able …

Volvo to pay 7 million after hidden pollution device found in California truck engines

Volvo to pay $197 million after hidden pollution device found in California truck engines

Volvo Group North America has agreed to pay nearly $197 million to resolve allegations from California regulators that company’s heavy-duty truck engines violated California emissions standards and certification requirements. About 10,000 diesel truck engines manufactured by Volvo were equipped with an undisclosed device, causing them to release excessive levels of smog-forming pollution across California, according to the California Air Resources Board, the state agency that regulates air pollution and greenhouse gases. Volvo is developing a software fix to repair many of these vehicles and extend their warranties at no cost to the owners. Eligible truck owners are expected to be notified of a non-mandatory recall on these trucks next year. CARB found inconsistencies in the Swedish automaker’s data while testing trucks with Volvo engines from model year 2010 to 2016, which resulted in the investigation and ensuing settlement. “This case underscores why CARB’s compliance testing and strong enforcement are essential to protecting the state’s air quality and public health,” said Lauren Sanchez, chair of the state Air Resources Board. “Our responsibility goes beyond adopting regulations …

The relentless churn of the 24-hour news cycle and the often-polarising nature of social media can exacerbate these feelings, making it difficult to disengage. Recognising this growing concern, Dr Chetna Kang, a consultant psychiatrist at Central Health London, has offered insights into what constitutes political anxiety. She has outlined six key indicators to watch for and provided practical advice on how to effectively manage and overcome these challenging emotions. What is political anxiety? “Anxiety lies on a spectrum from general day-to-day worry which everybody experiences, right through to degrees of anxiety which lead to panic disorder or symptoms of PTSD,” says Kang. “It’s essentially concern and worry on the …

Innovation abounds in device charging

Combined, these have repositioned chargers as differentiated standalone devices, rather than peripheral accessories. But, manufacturers say there is much further to go if chargers are to accommodate the demands of a connected ecosystem now made up of an estimated 20 billion devices, according to IoT Analytics. “Charging products are undergoing a fundamental identity shift—from accessory to primary component,” says Mario Wu, general manager for North America at Anker Innovations. “This is not simply a functional upgrade; It is a repositioning of charging’s role within the broader digital lifestyle ecosystem. As charging becomes normalized, the charger is no longer an appendage to your devices—it is the infrastructure underlying every digital experience.” Pillars of performance If this vision for the future of charging sounds ambitious, there are concrete advancements to back it up. Newly refined semiconductors are already bolstering power and performance, building on the gains delivered by GaN with some sweeping changes to systems architecture. To take advantage of the fast-moving technology, Anker launched GaNPrime 2.0, which combines GaN materials with higher-frequency controllers and other power …

Your old smartphone is secretly the best smart home device you already own

Your old smartphone is secretly the best smart home device you already own

You probably have an old iPhone sitting unused in a drawer. It may be a couple of generations behind, but if the screen and Wi-Fi work, it could be your best smart home controller yet. I’ve been using my old iPhone 16 Pro Max as a dedicated home controller since I upgraded last fall, and I genuinely wonder why it took me so long to figure this out. Dedicated smart home tablets and displays can cost between $100 and $300. Your old iPhone? It’s probably already been paid for and has simply been collecting dust until now. Related I turned my old tablet into a smart home dashboard, and it’s perfect I use my 1st-gen iPad Pro as a smart home dashboard Why you should stop using your main phone as a smart home controller A dedicated device removes every friction point If you use Apple HomeKit, the Home app is always just a swipe away on your main phone. That sounds convenient enough until it isn’t. Handing your phone to a guest to dim …
