Starmer crony claims Tories and Reform would ‘let small boat migrants drown’ | Politics | News

Lord Hermer attacked the Tories’ and Reform’s migration policy (Image: BBC) Reform and the Conservatives would let migrants “drown in the water”, Labour’s Attorney General has claimed. Lord Hermer claimed Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch’s parties would not take a “British” approach to the Channel migrant crisis. He also suggested Labour’s plan was “starting to be pretty effective in dealing with small boats”. But the Tories hit back calling his comments a “disgraceful slur”. Speaking to the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast, Lord Hermer questioned what the two parties would do instead, to which the host Nick Robinson said: “They say they’d round people up on the beaches and send them somewhere else.” Lord Hermer replied: “I think what they mean by that is they let people drown in the water. And that is not a British way to deal with it. That is not commensurate with our values. “The way to deal with it is the way that we’ve been dealing with it, and we’re going to carry rolling out further agreements, which is co-operation …

Five youngsters drown as UK experiences heatwave | UK News

Five youngsters have drowned in open water amid heatwave conditions in the UK. The deaths prompted the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to warn of the “very real risk” of swimming in open water during the heatwave – as Tuesday saw the hottest ever May day recorded in the UK, breaking the record for a second day in a row. A boy, 12, died on Tuesday after he got into trouble while swimming with friends in a river. Lancashire Constabulary said police received a report shortly after 2pm that the boy had entered the River Ribble at Ribchester. “A large-scale search involving officers from Lancashire Police’s underwater search unit and colleagues from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service was launched, with colleagues from North-West Ambulance Service providing support,” the force said. A body, which police believe to be the boy’s, was recovered from the river at about 7.50pm. Image: Declan Sawyer, whose body was discovered on Sunday. Trapped woman left to drown by paramedic who thought she could not be saved

A young mother died while stuck head-first and upside down between rocks on a seafront after a paramedic wrongly decided she could not be saved, an inquest heard. Saffron Cole-Nottage, 32, a mother of six, was walking with her daughter and her dog when she fell head-first into sea-defence rocks in Lowestoft, Suffolk, on Feb 2, 2025. Colleen Gibson was the first paramedic on the scene at about 8.10pm, but told the hearing she felt “unable to make a rescue” because Ms Cole-Nottage had already been “20 minutes submerged”. Body-camera footage showed police officers arriving and asking Ms Gibson whether anything could be done to save the trapped woman, to which she replied: “No.” Bridget Dolan KC, counsel for the two-week inquest, asked the paramedic why she did not tell emergency services that she potentially had had another 10 minutes to save the trapped woman’s life. Ms Gibson, who cried on the witness stand, replied: “I don’t know.” The seafront at Lowestoft where Ms Cole-Nottage lost her life – East Anglia News Service/East Anglia News …

Mom who watched a newborn baby drown in the toilet had pictures of Casey Anthony on her phone, cops say

A Florida college student accused of watching her newborn daughter drown in a toilet allegedly had photos of Casey Anthony, who was acquitted of first-degree murder in the disappearance of her infant child, on her phone, police say. Anne Mae Demegillo, a 20-year-old from Palm Coast whose newborn died March 5, was arrested the next day for aggravated manslaughter and initially released on $250,000 bond. After further investigation, a grand jury on Monday indicted her on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and concealing the death. Demegillo turned herself in at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and is now in custody without bond pending a court hearing, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday. During the investigation, detectives say that Demegillo had used her phone to search for terms such as “newborn premature babies,” “Palm Coast OBGYN” and “foods to decrease fertility.” Investigators also discovered that her phone held images of Anthony, who was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in a high-profile trial that captivated the country. She was, however, convicted …

British couple drown at popular Australian beach | World News

A British married couple have drowned at a popular beach on the New South Wales coast in Australia. They ran into difficulty while swimming at Shellharbour Beach, about 70 miles (114km) south of Sydney, shortly after 11am (local time) on Wednesday. The 66-year-old man and 64-year-old woman were pulled from the water by members of the public, who performed CPR, before paramedics arrived. Despite their efforts, the pair could not be revived and died at the scene, NSW Police said. The couple had been visiting family in the Illawarra region. Inspector Luke Geradts said some of the couple’s relatives were with them at the beach. “This is a timely reminder of the dangers and unpredictability of the ocean,” he said. “This is a tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the family who lost their loved ones today.” Inspector Geradts praised the actions of two off-duty nurses and a young man who ran to the couple’s rescue, recovering them from the water and giving them the “best chance of survival”. “Although a tragic outcome …
