Iranian state media has warned that the UAE will “pay the price” if the country is found to have committed “hostile actions” in connection with explosions at Bahman Pier. Explosions have been reported in the city of Bandar Abbas as well as the island of Qeshm, according to the Fars and Mehr news agencies. Bandar Abbas is to the north of the Strait of Hormuz, while Qeshm is an island in the vital waterway. The Tasnim news agency also reported that three US Navy destroyers near the Strait have been targeted by the Iranian navy. State media previously said they came under fire following an attack by the US military on an Iranian oil tanker. The Tasnim news agency also reported that “some sources” said the explosions in Bandar Abbas were related to defence systems engaging with two small drones. “If this matter is confirmed, the UAE will pay the price for its hostile act”, it said. Iran’s military has since accused the US of violating the ceasefire by targeting the oil tanker, as well …
Goldman Sachs research shared with POLITICO estimates that commercial jet fuel stocks in Europe, excluding government reserves, could fall to below 23 days of supply by the end of May or early June. That is a critical threshold flagged earlier by the International Energy Agency, beyond which airports may begin to face shortages. This would occur under the base scenario, which anticipates that the situation in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz will normalize by June. “Under an adverse scenario (normalization delayed to July), stocks could be depleted entirely by year-end,” the research said. Lufthansa reported overall positive results despite higher fuel costs, with its first quarter revenues up 8 percent to €8.7 billion compared with the same period a year ago. However, the group said that jet fuel prices, which have doubled since the start of the war in the Middle East, are expected to lead to additional costs of €1.7 billion in 2026. In April, Lufthansa cut 20,000 flights to eliminate routes that had become unprofitable due to higher fuel costs. The company also …
Dubai has come under attack from Iran once again as the UAE fends off yet more missiles from Tehran. In a statement on Tuesday, the UAE’s National Crisis Emergency and Disaster Management Authority said: “Air defenses are now dealing with a missile threat. Please remain in a safe place and follow the warnings and updates on official websites.” In a graphic shared alongside the message on X, the authority urged people not to “approach, touch, or photograph any fragments or objects that have fallen as a result of successful air interceptions, and allow the relevant authorities to assess the situation.” The UAE said it had engaged a number of missiles and drones launched from Iran on Monday, May 4. The defence ministry said its air defence systems engaged 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and four drones. It is understood that one missile struck a petroleum site in the eastern emirate of Fujairah. Fujairah’s Media Office said a drone sparked a fire at the site. One person posted on social media: “Big boom heard in …
A major food company in Dubai is set to be placed into provisional liquidation, according to reports. IFFCO Group is said to have debts of nearly £1.5 billion and made little progress in restructuring talks amid disputes among key shareholders and the Iran war. The conflict, which began in late February, and the continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has put additional pressure on the company’s supply chains, it is claimed. The United Arab Emirates — where much of IFFCO’s business is based — is heavily reliant on food shipments via its ports. IFFCO is described in reports as one of the largest food companies in Dubai, if not the biggest. The company is a conglomerate and its brands span more than 20 food and personal care categories, its website says. IIFCO’s products include olive oil, biscuits, poultry, as well as animal feed. It is best known by Dubai residents as the operator of the London Dairy ice cream brand, according to the Financial Times which first reported the news of the provisional liquidation. …

Daniel Joseph Kinahan, an Irish fugitive suspected of drug trafficking and money laundering, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, authorities said, ending a years-long hunt for an alleged boss of one of the world’s most notorious cartels. Source link
DUBLIN, April 17 (Reuters) – Dubai police have arrested alleged Irish crime gang boss Daniel Kinahan on charges of organised criminal activity, a law-enforcement source said on Saturday. Dubai police said in a statement on Friday that they had “arrested an Irish fugitive for his alleged role in an organised criminal group involved in international crimes in his home country,” but did not name Kinahan. A law-enforcement source confirmed the man was Daniel Kinahan. The arrest happened on Wednesday and followed the receipt of a judicial file from Irish authorities, the Dubai police said. Kinahan was named as one of three leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group by the United States in 2022 when it offered a $5 million reward for their arrest. The U.S. Treasury likened the Kinahan drug trafficking gang to some of the world’s most notorious crime networks and said the gang frequently uses Dubai as a hub for illicit activities. A lawyer for Daniel Kinahan told the BBC in 2021 that he has no criminal record or convictions and allegations about …
