Kenya’s police crack down on protest against US Ebola centre in Nanyuki | Ebola News

Published On 9 Jun 20269 Jun 2026 Gunshots, water cannon and tear gas have been used by Kenya’s police in the central town of Nanyuki, where hundreds of protesters lit fires and hurled stones at law enforcement officers as they demonstrated against a quarantine centre for US citizens exposed to Ebola. Tuesday’s violence came as the proposed quarantine centre at the town’s Laikipia Air Base has caused anger among Kenyans who accuse the United States of shifting the risks of caring for people exposed to the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda onto Kenya. Kenya has never recorded a case of Ebola, and many residents oppose bringing potential carriers of the virus into the country. The centre is designed to have 50 isolation beds, run by US staff, and was nearing completion late last week. Construction has continued despite a temporary halt order from Kenya’s High Court and vocal opposition from local politicians. President William Ruto’s government has pledged to press ahead with the project, arguing that Kenya owes Washington …

USAID ‘whistleblower’ assesses U.S. response to Ebola : NPR

Nicholas Enrich worked for the United States Agency for International Development under four administrations and was dismissed after leaking memos detailing plans to shut it down. He writes about the end of USAID — and his role in the response to a 2025 Ebola outbreak — in his new book, Into the Woodchipper: A Whistleblower’s Account of How the Trump Administration Shredded USAID. Simon & Schuster hide caption toggle caption Simon & Schuster In March 2025, Nicholas Enrich was the top U.S. official for global health when two major events were happening at the same time: The Trump administration was dismantling USAID, and an Ebola outbreak was spreading in Uganda. It was Enrich’s job to manage the U.S. response. He says he was stymied at every turn. “I was told by one of the political appointees, who was the head of the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, that Ebola is a scam,” Enrich says. A year later, as the worst Ebola outbreak in more than a decade spreads in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Enrich …

The Mitumba Mountains, home to lowland gorillas, rise up before him. Behind him are the Rwenzori Mountains with glaciers and snow-capped tops beside the equator. “It is one of the most beautiful places in the world,” he says. But beyond this picturesque scene, there is a volatile combination of brutal rebel violence and a burgeoning Ebola outbreak. Ebola outbreak in DR Congo could top 20,000 cases in worst case, CDC says

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda could lead to more than 20,000 cases and over 2,000 deaths in a worst-case scenario, according to a report published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. That scenario — modeled using data through May 24, when about 50 deaths had been reported — assumes that only 20% of Ebola patients isolate and that access to vaccines and treatments is limited, the agency said. The outbreak is caused by a rare type of Ebola called Bundibugyo that currently has no available vaccines or treatments. Even in a more optimistic scenario, with around 70% of cases isolating, the report found that there remains about a 1 in 5 chance that the outbreak could surpass 10,000 cases within three months. Dr. Krutika Kuppalli, an infectious diseases physician at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Texas and a former World Health Organization medical officer, called the projections “concerning.” “Under certain …
