Supreme Court lets Alabama use congressional map diluting Black vote

Supreme Court lets Alabama use congressional map diluting Black vote

The Supreme Court on Tuesday night allowed Alabama to use in November’s elections a new map for congressional districts that a lower federal court ruled was discriminatory to Black voters. The 6-3 ruling by the Supreme Court, which will eliminate one of the two majority Black districts in Alabama, is expected to result in Republicans gaining one seat from the state in the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections. The 2nd District seat currently held by Rep. Shomari Figures, a Democrat, is now expected to be won by a Republican. Republicans hold a razor-thin majority in the House. Since last year, they have forced redistricting in a number of states in an effort to retain that majority in the upcoming elections, which in turn led to identical efforts by Democrats in other states. The ruling by the Supreme Court’s six-member conservative majority was unsigned. It will allow Alabama to use the disputed map, for now, until a legal fight over it is ultimately resolved. Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote a dissent that was joined …

Iowa Democratic primary could help decide control of the Senate

Iowa Democratic U.S. Senate candidates Josh Turek, left, and Zach Wahls. Getty Images Iowa Democrats on Tuesday are voting in one of the party’s most closely watched primary elections this election year in a key test of the party’s strategy to take control of the Senate in this year’s midterms. Voters will choose between front-runner state Rep. Josh Turek and state Sen. Zach Wahls. Both are vying to become the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate in Iowa since Tom Harkin, who was last elected in 2008. Whoever wins the primary will square off against Rep. Ashley Hinson, a Republican who represents the state’s 2nd congressional district, to fill the seat Sen. Joni Ernst will vacate at the end of this year Hinson also has a primary challenger in Jim Carlin, though she is heavily favored to win. Whoever emerges will have the difficult task of winning in a state that President Donald Trump took by 13 percentage points in 2024, and where there are nearly 200,000 more registered Republican voters than Democrats. Democrats, however, …

Voters will head to the polls in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, with the biggest contest of the night being California’s race to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom. California has a slew of important House primaries, too, after Democrats redrew the state’s congressional lines in hope of netting their party up to five seats. More than a half-dozen incumbents in both parties are fighting for political survival. And in Iowa, where they believe they can compete up and down the ballot despite Republicans’ recent dominance, Democrats first have to get through a competitive Senate primary, while a broad field of Republicans has been competing for the governorship. Here are the major races to watch. California …

Danish PM Frederiksen secures third term with new coalition government

Danish PM Frederiksen secures third term with new coalition government

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Monday she had managed to form a left-leaning minority coalition government following months of talks after inconclusive elections in March. “A government was able to be formed, after long negotiations,” she told reporters after meeting with the country’s King Frederik X. A statement from the palace said the coalition would consist of Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, the Socialist People’s Party, the centre-left Radikale Venstre and the centrist Moderates. It marks a third term as premier for Frederiksen, 48, who in January stood up to US President Donald Trump against his threats to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Frederiksen said she would present her political programme on Tuesday, and on Wednesday the new cabinet. Neither the left nor the right bloc won a majority in the March 24 election, which left parliament splintered. The four parties in the new coalition between them hold 82 of the 179 seats in parliament. Media reported that a separate alliance of leftists and greens could support the coalition. Ethiopia: 'One of the most rapidly growing economies in Africa, but wealth distribution is terrible'

Ethiopia: 'One of the most rapidly growing economies in Africa, but wealth distribution is terrible'

Annette Young is pleased to welcome Dr. Douglas Yates, Africa Specialist and Political Science Professor at the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy. Amid ongoing conflict, will Ethiopia’s elections be “free and fair”? While acknowledging that electoral procedures may function in parts of the country, he argues that conflict, exclusion, inflation, and uneven development remain the defining realities shaping Ethiopia’s political landscape. Dr. Yates also revisits the dramatic shift in perceptions of PM Abiy Ahmed since he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. What was once celebrated as a moment of regional reconciliation has evolved into a far more complicated political reality shaped by internal rebellions and regional rivalries. Source link

Ethiopia votes in elections expected to give Abiy’s party a landslide win

Ethiopia votes in elections expected to give Abiy’s party a landslide win

Voting took place in Ethiopia on Monday in parliamentary and regional elections expected to hand Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s ruling Prosperity Party an easy victory, despite significant unrest in much of the country. More than 50 million people were registered to vote, but there was no election in the northern Tigray region, where organisers had cited “unfavourable conditions” in the aftermath of a two-year civil war and amid continuing political turmoil. Abiy, whose party has campaigned ‌on the government’s economic record, said there would be more progress to come as he cast his ballot in his hometown of Beshasha in the Oromiya region. “The Ethiopian people have demonstrated that they do not need anyone to advise or lecture them in order to build their state and establish a democratic system,” he said. “These next five years will be ‌a period where we see many historic turning points for Ethiopia.” The head of the African Union Election Observation Mission, former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, said voting was progressing smoothly. Melatwork Hailu, chairperson of the election board, …

What to Expect in Montana’s State Primary

What to Expect in Montana’s State Primary

WASHINGTON (AP) — Montana voters will select nominees in Tuesday’s state primary to replace departing Republican incumbents in the U.S. Senate and House, but one major contender won’t be on the ballot. Meanwhile, several state legislative primaries will highlight divisions within Montana’s dominant Republican Party. Republicans hold slim majorities in both chambers of Congress. Montana has not been at the top of the list of seats Democrats hope to flip to regain control of either body, but the retirements do creak open the door for a candidate to possibly take advantage of the state’s independent streak. Republican U.S. Sen. Steve Daines is not seeking a third term. He has endorsed former U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme to replace him. Daines’ late withdrawal from the race in March and the launch of Alme’s candidacy, both timed to occur just before the filing deadline, appeared to be carefully choreographed. President Donald Trump seemed to confirm as much in his endorsement of Alme. “In fact, if Kurt didn’t have the highest level of aptitude and talent, Steve would have …

Colorado Elections Clerk Released From Prison After Governor Commutes Sentence

DENVER (AP) — Tina Peters, the former county clerk convicted of participating in a scheme to chase election conspiracy theories promulgated by President Donald Trump, was released from state prison Monday after the president successfully pressured Colorado’s Democratic governor into commuting her sentence. Shortly after her release was confirmed by the Colorado Department of Corrections, Peters appeared on the program of Steve Bannon, a former Trump adviser who was part of the right-wing campaign to free Peters. Gov. Jared Polis said he would shorten Peters’ sentence if she expressed regret about her actions. But in her interview with Bannon, Peters repeated the debunked conspiracy theory that voting machines cheated Trump out of reelection in 2020 and portrayed herself as a martyr to the effort to expose it. “I know that the Democrats are going to cheat, and no one is really addressing the problem that I spent my time in prison as retribution for,” Peters said. Multiple reviews, recounts and audits in the battleground states where Trump disputed his 2020 loss have all affirmed that …
