A Mid-Career Stall Is Costing White-Collar Workers Thousands Of Dollars

A Mid-Career Stall Is Costing White-Collar Workers Thousands Of Dollars

We’re all used to being told that white-collar workers have an advantage in the world because of their higher-paying jobs. It seems that even their advanced degrees and spacious offices can’t protect them from the pitfalls created by this economy and job market, though. According to research conducted by New York University’s School of Professional Studies and Burning Glass Institute, the white-collar workers society has idealized for decades now are actually losing thousands of dollars because of a crisis few talk about but many experience. These employees are, essentially, stuck. White-collar workers are facing what experts call a ‘mid-career stall.’ The researchers described this kind of stall as “a period of five or more years with no meaningful promotion and negligible wage growth.” 24.2% of employees who are considered to be “mid-career,” or 10 to 15 years from the beginning of their professional experience, have been hit with this unfortunate stall. A CBS News analysis of the research noted that this lack of mobility can add up to tens of thousands of dollars less made …

Bosses Who Micromanage Don’t Realize It Says More About Them Than The Workers

Bosses Who Micromanage Don’t Realize It Says More About Them Than The Workers

There are a lot of bad bosses out there, but micromanagers definitely take the cake as the worst to work for. (Like the manager I once had who made us show him every email before we sent it. Every. Single. Email.) Jobs are stressful and taxing enough without a boss breathing down your neck all the time. Of course, most bosses who micromanage would say that it’s employees’ ineptitude that forces them to be that way. These bosses usually create an environment that makes their team feel like they have to prioritize pleasing them over customers, though, which really defeats their purpose altogether. One man argued that in these situations, the employees aren’t the problem at all. A man thinks bosses who micromanage are bad at their jobs, and even bad at identifying the best talent for their teams. TikToker @bbebard, known as Ginger Jack on the app, had some pointed words for micromanagers, saying they shouldn’t be in a leadership position in the first place.  To illustrate his point, Ginger Jack used his own …

Generational Differences In What Work-Appropriate Attire Means

Generational Differences In What Work-Appropriate Attire Means

After offices shut down in 2020, work culture shifted in a major way. The morning commute went from fighting traffic jams and crowded sidewalks to rolling out of bed and settling in on a well-worn corner of the couch. As companies announced return-to-office mandates, workers were faced with another challenge: deciding what to wear in the face of our new normal. We went from working in suits to working in sweats. Now, as we’re trickling back into offices, we’re left wondering if we have to put those suits back on, and it turns out that each generation has a radically different mindset when it comes to corporate style. One woman noticed that Gen Z, millennials, Gen X, and boomers have very different ideas about ‘work-appropriate’ attire. Kourtlynn Faith shared her fashion-forward perspective, breaking down various OOTDs (outfits of the day) based on generation. “If you work in corporate, it is so funny to see how each generation dresses for work,” she said. “It’s funny to see what each generation deems as ‘work-appropriate’ attire.” Boomers are …

3 Things That AI Has Taken Away From Highly Intelligent People

3 Things That AI Has Taken Away From Highly Intelligent People

Artificial intelligence was created to make our lives easier, and in many ways, it has. It can write emails in seconds and generate highly detailed images from a single prompt. Tasks that previously required years of specialized training can now be completed with the press of a button. However, for people who are highly intelligent, it has also taken away certain language conventions that are now known as “hallmarks of AI.” Many have stopped using them completely for fear of being accused of using AI, even though it sadly brings them a sense of loss. Here are 3 things that highly intelligent people will never forgive AI for taking away from them: 1. Em dashes PeopleImages | Shutterstock Oh, the beloved em dash. Often used as a substitute for commas, parentheses, or colons, this punchy punctuation mark used to be a fan favorite for sophisticated writers. In the English language, they are most commonly used to emphasize an idea or mark a shift in patterns of speaking or thinking. A tool that more advanced writers …

Dad Wants His Parents To Use Their Million Retirement To Pay Daughter’s Tuition

Dad Wants His Parents To Use Their $3 Million Retirement To Pay Daughter’s Tuition

Paying for college is something most parents worry about, given that tuition costs will only continue to rise. Between tuition, housing, meal plans, books, and all the extra fees that tend to accumulate, college has become a fast way to take on debt.  In one family’s case, though, they decided to turn to their retired parents for help, who had an extensive amount of money stowed away. In a question submitted to personal finance publication Kiplinger, the grandparents admitted that they’re hesitant to pay for their granddaughter’s tuition because of how expensive it actually is. And despite having decent retirement savings, it’s still a fixed income. Dad wants his parents to use their $3 million in retirement savings to pay his daughter’s tuition, but she chose a college that costs $90K per year. “We’re 75-year-old retirees with $3.2 million. Our son’s pressuring us to help pay for our granddaughter’s college so she can avoid loans. It’s not our fault she picked a school that’s $90k a year! What should we do?” the grandparents shared in …

The ‘Permacession’ Theory Suggests Everyone Is Unhappy Even Though The Economy Isn’t That Bad

The ‘Permacession’ Theory Suggests Everyone Is Unhappy Even Though The Economy Isn’t That Bad

In a piece for The Atlantic, economics and politics journalist Annie Lowrey introduced the idea of a “permacession,” or a permanent recession in which Americans are convinced the economy is constantly on life support even when it’s not.  For a few years now, “vibecession” has been a buzzword. The term was coined by economic writer Kyla Scanlon to describe an economy that isn’t doing all that bad, but people still aren’t thrilled about it because they aren’t seeing improvements in their own lives. In other words, they’re getting bad vibes. The question is, do the facts really back that up? The ‘permacession’ theory says Americans’ persistent pessimism has created an environment in which they can’t actually recognize how strong the economy is. Lowrey has written about the “vibecession” extensively, but she feels like that isn’t the right descriptor to use anymore since “vibes are temporary.” Instead, she thinks that something deeper is going on that she can’t quite explain. “Americans are expressing some of the deepest, broadest, and stubbornest economic pessimism ever recorded,” she wrote. …

Mom Got Her Hospital Bills Lowered By Using A Debt Collector’s Trick

Mom Got Her Hospital Bills Lowered By Using A Debt Collector’s Trick

In America, hospital bills strike terror into the hearts of most of us and often ruin people’s lives and futures. So it seems ridiculous to think that the process of creating medical bills is so absurdly arbitrary that a single sentence could make large chunks of them disappear. However, that’s precisely what one mom recently learned. Health policy research organization KFF estimates that as many as 100 million Americans carry medical debt, and an investigation by NPR found that the problem is not only worsening, but it’s also the result of systematic efforts by our for-profit healthcare industry. Given how terrifying this is, TikToker Annie Muscato’s recent experience is downright counterintuitive because asking one simple question made a giant chunk of her bill disappear. A mom got her hospital bills lowered by $3,000 using a trick she learned from a debt collector. After giving birth, Muscato received medical bills that were inaccurate by thousands of dollars. The only reason she even noticed the discrepancy is because she did a thing all too many of us refrain from doing: she opened …

Man Shares Money-Saving Tips From His Cheap Parents

Man Shares Money-Saving Tips From His Cheap Parents

In today’s economy, most of us are looking to save a buck in any way we can. Still, it’s no surprise that a large portion of Americans think that their emergency savings wouldn’t be enough to cover an actual urgent expense. A lot of people struggle with penny-pinching because they simply don’t know how to. This is where the benefits of having been raised by cheapskates come in handy! One man learned all kinds of money-saving tips from his frugal parents, and he shared them on TikTok to help you maybe save a buck or two. The man explained how his ‘cheap parents’ taught him to negotiate bills. Many of us take each bill we receive at face value, even though everything seems to be a price gouge nowadays. Content creator Sean Lans is not one of those people. “I have cheap parents who taught me a lot about saving money,” he said in a post. Lans acknowledged “that not everyone was lucky/unlucky enough to have cheap parents,” so he decided to share all the …

Mom With A Fear Of Vomiting Makes Sick Child Sleep In Driveway

Mom With A Fear Of Vomiting Makes Sick Child Sleep In Driveway

Parenting is not glamorous, especially when a sick kid is involved. From barf to diaper blowouts, sick children and their fluids tend to get everywhere, and if that sort of stuff grosses you out as a parent, well … good luck.  One mom who claims to have emetophobia, an actual intense, anxiety-inducing fear of seeing or thinking about or experiencing vomit in any way, shared a video on social media of her sick child and husband snuggling in the driveway while she was safely ensconced in the house. Needless to say, it sparked a bit of outrage, with many people wondering if the fear was that bad, and how she was able to take the video in the first place. A mom with a fear of vomiting shared a video of her sick child sleeping in the driveway while she stayed in the house. In a recent TikTok post, mom influencer The Accidental Adult shared a video of her sick toddler lying down on what appears to be a makeshift bed with the caption, “POV: …
