Starmer crony claims Tories and Reform would ‘let small boat migrants drown’ | Politics | News

Lord Hermer attacked the Tories’ and Reform’s migration policy (Image: BBC) Reform and the Conservatives would let migrants “drown in the water”, Labour’s Attorney General has claimed. Lord Hermer claimed Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch’s parties would not take a “British” approach to the Channel migrant crisis. He also suggested Labour’s plan was “starting to be pretty effective in dealing with small boats”. But the Tories hit back calling his comments a “disgraceful slur”. Speaking to the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast, Lord Hermer questioned what the two parties would do instead, to which the host Nick Robinson said: “They say they’d round people up on the beaches and send them somewhere else.” Lord Hermer replied: “I think what they mean by that is they let people drown in the water. And that is not a British way to deal with it. That is not commensurate with our values. “The way to deal with it is the way that we’ve been dealing with it, and we’re going to carry rolling out further agreements, which is co-operation …

Pope Leo meets families of youth lost to illegal toxic waste dumping in Italy’s ‘Land of Fires’

ACERRA, Italy (AP) — Pope Leo XIV on Saturday greeted one by one families who lost loved ones to illegal toxic dumping in an area near Naples, tied to a multi-billion criminal racket run by the mafia. Many paused to share photographs and other mementos of children and young people who have died or are battling cancer because of the pollution. Leo’s visit to the so-called Terra dei Fuochi, or Land of Fires, came on the eve of the 11th anniversary of Pope Francis’ big ecological encyclical Laudato Si (Praised Be), and indicates Leo’s commitment to carry on his predecessor’s environmental agenda. “I have come first of all to gather the tears of those who have lost loved ones, killed by environmental pollution caused by unscrupulous people and organizations who for too long were able to act with impunity,” Leo said in remarks to family members and local clergy inside Acerra’s cathedral. The pontiff recalled that the area now dubbed the Land of Fires was once called “Campania felix,” Latin for blessed or fruitful countryside, …

Stop ‘nonsensical objections’ to leaving ECHR, Jack Straw tells PM

Stop ‘nonsensical objections’ to leaving ECHR, Jack Straw tells PM

A former Labour home secretary has told Sir Keir Starmer to stop making “nonsensical” objections to leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Jack Straw, who also served as foreign secretary and justice secretary, said it was wrong to argue Britain would be in the same “club” as Belarus or Russia if it withdrew from the treaty. Sir Keir has pledged that he will never leave the ECHR and will treat international law with “profound respect”. Matthew Pennycook, the housing minister, has claimed that withdrawing from the convention would align Britain with Russia and Belarus. But Mr Straw, who served under Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, dismissed this argument as “nonsensical”, insisting that leaving the ECHR voluntarily was different to being forced out. The ECHR is an international treaty that can only be signed by members of the Council of Europe. It is applied by the European Court of Human Rights. Jack Straw has also said that British judges are better than those linked to the European Court of Human Rights – Oli …

Starmer’s small boats plan in tatters as arrivals hit three-year high | UK | News

Labour’s illegal immigration “smash the gangs” vow has been branded “a disaster” – as small-boat arrivals hit a three-year high. And damningly, the government has admitted a total of 41,472 migrants made the perilous crossing in 2025 – up 13% rise on the 36,566 in 2024 – was “shameful”. Meanwhile, under the so-called one-in one-out deal agreed with France in August, 193 migrants were sent back and 195 arrived. The near 41,500 migrants making the crossing from France – a European safe haven – prompted an angry response from appalled Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.   He slammed the astronomical figure, saying it made a mockery of PM Sir Keir Starmer’s promise to break up people-smuggling networks. Mr Farage said: “Smash the gangs is a disaster, the one-in, one-out deal is a farce and the numbers coming over are huge. Many of the young men that have arrived last year will do us great harm.” Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said quitting the European Convention on Human Rights was the only way to take effective …
