Kate Middleton’s quiet moment of ‘solidarity’ in myth-busting evening gown

Kate Middleton’s quiet moment of ‘solidarity’ in myth-busting evening gown

The Princess of Wales’ evening gown collection is one of the most impressive of all the royal ladies. Her wardrobe comprises pieces in soft pastel tones and bright jewel colours, but in 2013, she donned a gown that broke what many believe to be a golden rule.  Kate, 44, usually reserves black gowns for funerals and memorial events, for example, Remembrance Day. However, while attending a gala dinner in aid of Action on Addiction hosted by the 100 Women in Hedge Funds Philanthropic Initiatives in London, she proved the idea that she never wears black to evening events is a myth. © Getty ImagesKate posed with Amanda Pullinger, director of 100WHF, and Mimi Drake, Chairman of 100WHF, at a gala dinner in aid of Action on Addiction The royal, who is the patron of the Action on Addiction charity, opted for a black Jenny Packham gown with capped sleeves, a cinched waist, and a V-shaped neckline. She accessorised with a diamond bangle and wore her signature brunette locks in blow-dried curls. Why did Kate choose …

Buy bread in the evening, hit the sales on a Tuesday: retail workers’ top tips to cut your shopping bill | Life and style

From supermarkets’ yellow-stickered items to apps for free food, there are many ways to lower your shopping bill amid the cost of living crisis. Retail workers share their insider info on how to save money at grocery stores, street markets and charity shops. Be savvy about store discounts Alasdair Baker from Aldershot runs The Penny Pincher, a site dedicated to helping people save money on their bills, which he started 12 years ago when he went bankrupt and “discovered yellow-sticker shopping”. Then, during Covid, Baker was furloughed from his job working for a bathroom supplier and went to work for Morrisons. It was, he says, “a massive eye-opener. I got to see the things I wrote about on my website.” He gained a greater understanding of food distribution, food wastage and food poverty: “All the sort of stuff that you don’t really think about as you push a trolley around.” Part of his job was to check the dates on products and reduce the price of those that were about to expire using yellow discount …

Sotheby’s Spring Evening Sale in London Achieves 5 M. White-Glove Result

Sotheby’s Spring Evening Sale in London Achieves $175 M. White-Glove Result

Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared in On Balance, the ARTnews newsletter about the art market and beyond. Sign up here to receive it every Wednesday. It is officially March, which means I was back at the Windmill pub, just around the corner from Sotheby’s New Bond Street location, on Wednesday. My pre-sale pint before the house’s spring modern and contemporary evening sale has become a certainty in a world of uncertainties. I had only 15 minutes to neck it because David Rothschild and James Francis Fox , co-heads of private sales, had just given me a tour of “The Apartment,” a private exhibition of 11 works in one of Sotheby’s stately backrooms. Paintings by David Hockney, Luciano Fontana, and Helen Frankenthaler hung alongside furniture by designer and gallerist Rose Uniacke, all of it for sale. The art was valued at around £40 million all in; at the time of writing, five works had sold. One buyer had already signed off on an Andy Warhol Dollar Sign work and taken it away. Evening screen use may be more relaxing than stimulating for teenagers

Evening screen use may be more relaxing than stimulating for teenagers

A recent study published in the Journal of Sleep Research suggests that evening screen use might not be as physically stimulating for teenagers as many parents and experts have assumed. The findings provide evidence that most digital activities actually coincide with lower heart rates compared to non-screen activities like moving around the house or playing. This indicates that the common connection between screens and poor sleep is likely driven by the timing of device use rather than a state of high physical arousal. Adolescence is a time when establishing healthy sleep patterns is essential for mental health and growth, yet many young people fall short of the recommended eight to ten hours of sleep. While screen use has been linked to shorter sleep times, the specific reasons why this happens are not yet fully understood. Existing research has looked at several possibilities, such as the light from screens affecting hormones or the simple fact that screens take up time that could be spent sleeping. Some experts have also worried that the excitement from social media …

Henry Moore Sculpture Worth £15 M. to Headline Christie’s 20th/21st Century Evening Sale in London this Spring

Henry Moore Sculpture Worth £15 M. to Headline Christie’s 20th/21st Century Evening Sale in London this Spring

A sculpture by English artist Henry Moore that’s fresh to the auction block is headlining Christie’s 20th/21st Century evening sale in London on March 5. Titled King and Queen (1952-53), the 64-inch-tall bronze has a £15 million ($20.5 million) high estimate. Katherine Arnold, Christie’s vice chairman of 20th/21st century art and head of post-war and contemporary art for Europe, told ARTnews that the bronze is “the most exciting sculpture I’ve ever seen brought to market.” She added that the work was acquired directly from the artist by the anonymous current owner: “It is the first cast in an edition of four plus an artist’s cast, and it is the only remaining example in private hands.” All the other casts of King and Queen are now in major public museums including the MOA Museum of Art in Atami, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp, and the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. Two additional casts were later made especially for the Tate (in 1957) and for the Henry Moore …

An Evening With Michael Egnor at Cornell

An Evening With Michael Egnor at Cornell

This article by Tom Winkler is republished from Science and Culture Today. I have been blessed to hear Michael Egnor speak several times, beginning with his talk at the opening of the Walter Bradley Center on Natural and Artificial Intelligence in 2018 in Seattle. Prior to this year, I believe I had heard him speak four or five other times in person, apart from watching his online appearances after the publication of his book, written with Denyse O’Leary, The Immortal Mind. So, why travel to Ithaca, New York, with all the snow and ice in both New York and here in Texas, to hear him yet another time? The reason was the setting for this talk. Dr. Egnor had been invited to speak by the Cornell University chapter of Heterodox Academy. The chapter is sponsored by Randy Wayne, a Cornell biology professor and supporter of intelligent design. Randy had already been able to bring James Tour and Michael Behe to speak and has plans for more ID scientists to do so in the future. A Seemingly …

I’ve replaced evening strolls with home walking workouts to keep active in winter—and these are my favourites

I’ve replaced evening strolls with home walking workouts to keep active in winter—and these are my favourites

It’s the middle of winter, the temperature’s plummeted and it’s already dark when you finish work. If you’re anything like me, it’s tempting to swap an evening stroll for a night on the sofa, and let your step count drop. The good news is, I’ve found a way to still get my steps in without leaving the house—and it doesn’t involve finding the space for a home treadmill. You may like YouTube is bursting with follow-along walking workouts that can easily be done in small spaces without the need for fancy equipment, from short 1,000 step workouts to 10,000 step workouts that will take more than hour. To see whether they could replace my usual evening walk, I tried some of the most popular walking workouts on YouTube. Because I have a pair of 2kg weights at home, I added them into the mix too, although all the workouts can be done without them, or you can use tins of food or bottles of water. If you’re looking for a fun alternative to outdoor walking …
