The New Era of AI-Driven Zero-Day Exploits and Malware

Artificial intelligence is altering the cybersecurity landscape, creating new challenges as cybercriminals adopt AI to enhance their tactics. Matthew Berman examines how AI is being used to execute complex attacks, such as AI-driven zero-day exploits and supply chain breaches. A notable example is the AI-powered “Shy Hulud” worm, which exploits software dependencies to infiltrate systems with remarkable precision in AI cyber attacks. These developments underscore the growing need to address the dynamic relationship between offensive and defensive AI in safeguarding digital systems. Explore the mechanics of AI-enabled cyberattacks, including how they amplify traditional methods like polymorphic malware and autonomous threats. Gain insight into the geopolitical implications of AI-driven cyber operations and examine strategies for mitigating these risks. This guide also provide more insights into the role of defensive AI in enhancing cybersecurity measures to counter evolving threats. AI and the Evolution of Zero-Day Exploits TL;DR Key Takeaways : AI is transforming cybersecurity, allowing both advanced cyberattacks (e.g., zero-day exploits) and innovative defensive tools, necessitating adaptive strategies to address evolving threats. AI-driven supply chain attacks, such …

A suite of government hacking tools targeting iPhones is now being used by cybercriminals

Security researchers have identified a suite of powerful hacking tools capable of compromising iPhones running older software that they say has passed from a government customer into the hands of cybercriminals. Google said Tuesday that it first identified the exploit kit, dubbed Coruna, in February 2025 during a surveillance vendor’s attempt to hack into someone’s phone with spyware on behalf of a government customer. It found the same exploit kit months later targeting Ukrainian users in a broad-scale campaign by a Russian espionage group, and then later found it used by a financially motivated hacker in China. It’s unclear how the tools leaked or proliferated, but Google security researchers warned of an emerging market for “secondhand” exploits, which are sold to hackers motivated by money to extract more value out of the exploit. The discovery also shows how exploits and back doors designed to be used by governments can leak and ultimately be abused by cybercriminals or other non-state actors. Mobile security company iVerify obtained and reverse-engineered the hacking tools, saying in a blog post …

How Russia’s War Machine Brutalizes and Exploits Its Own Soldiers

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has built a war machine in Ukraine with an insatiable demand for men. Underpinning that machine is a pattern of brutality and coercion in which commanders dole out abuse as punishment while exploiting soldiers — even the gravely ill or injured — to keep them on the battlefield, an investigation by The New York Times has found. Mr. Putin has hailed the troops fighting his war of attrition as sacred heroes, and Russian society as the most important weapon in his forces’ advance on the battlefield. But more than 6,000 confidential complaints about the war reviewed by The Times show that anger and discontent simmer beneath the surface as the Russian leader’s methods for sustaining the war destroy countless military families. “We’ve been living in fear for three years, keeping silent about everything,” the wife of a soldier from Saratov, a city in southwestern Russia, wrote in one complaint. “I’m being torn apart on the inside from the injustice!” Thousands of those petitioning the Russian government struggle to get …
