Extra Bank Holiday next Monday update in full from government and King | UK | News

An extra Bank Holiday has been confirmed for some UK households for a week Monday, June 15. But not all of Britain will be able to enjoy a free, extra day off from work as only one constituent nation of the UK will be handed the bonus bank hol. Normally, there are eight Bank Holiday days per year across England and Wales, including New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, early and late May Bank Holidays, August Bank Holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. However, Scotland also gets its national day, St Andrew’s Day, on November 30 but not Easter Monday. This June, though, Scotland will get another bonus Bank Holiday a week on Monday. A statement issued by the Scottish Government has confirmed the day with approval from King Charles. The reason is to celebrate Scotland’s participation in World Cup 2026, the first time Scotland has been to a World Cup tournament since 1998. The Scottish Government statement in full reads: “Royal Proclamation approved by His Majesty the King. “Monday 15 June 2026 has …

In a study published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, astronomers say the chunk of space rock known as Northwest Africa (NWA) 12774 once belonged to a protoplanet possibly as large as Mars. That is, until a cosmic crash likely blew it to smithereens.  The solar system includes eight known planets (sorry, Pluto). Barring interstellar catastrophe, this number will remain the same until the sun finally dies about 5 billion years from now. However, this total planetary count was never a guarantee. The solar system’s earliest era featured multiple embryonic protoplanets that had the potential to grow together into additional cosmic neighbors. …

Labour could pay parents already on benefits extra cash | Politics | News

The Labour leadership have allowed benefits to get out of hand (Image: Getty) The Labour Party is considering paying families on benefits hundreds of pounds-a-month to urge their children to start apprenticeships. It comes as the Government’s work tsar Alan Milburn has warned that the benefits system is holding back teenagers from working because of perverse incentives. Mr Milburn revealed that almost one million young people are not in education, employment or training (Neets), making a reset “absolutely essential”. He also shockingly revealed: “For every £25 that we spend keeping young people on benefits, we spend only £1 helping them get into work through employment support.” Ministers fear families on welfare were discouraging their teenage children from leaving full-time education and taking up apprenticeship courses because they would lose handouts such as child benefit and parts of universal credit. In the worst-case hypothetical scenario found by the social security advisory committee, a single parent whose disabled child was the last person on the benefit claim would receive £339 a week less if the teenager started …

Britain braces for long, hot traffic queues amid extra border checks | Transport

An especially hot late May bank holiday weekend is expected to bring more traffic to the roads than usual at the start of the half-term break taking place in parts of the UK, motoring organisations have warned. With temperatures forecast to pass 30C in places by Monday, coastal roads are predicted to be among the busiest, with long queues expected towards seaside resorts and the Port of Dover, where delays in border checks are compounding the holiday rush. The RAC expects almost 19 million drivers to hit Britain’s roads over the long weekend, 1 million more than the same holiday period in 2025. Its polling found almost four in 10 drivers intend to take a leisure trip, with the heaviest traffic likely to be on Friday and Saturday, although about 5% of drivers said high fuel prices would keep them at home. The average price of petrol across the UK is 158.52p, the highest since December 2022, according to the RAC. The AA said its polling suggested that day trips to the coast would account …

5 Zodiac Signs Get Extra Support From The Universe Between Now And May 20, 2026

Five zodiac signs are getting some extra support from the universe between now and May 20, 2026. According to an astrologer, the astrological energy throughout this Taurus season is just what the doctor ordered for these signs. As the astrologers at Cafe Astrology wrote, the time that the Sun spends in Taurus (which is typically from April 19 until May 20) is perfect for “maintaining or building, as well as enjoying and appreciating what’s already in place.” Things may take a little longer to come to fruition, but once they do, they’ll most likely last long-term. During this astrological season, the universe is supporting the following signs in particular with the stable and grounded energy that Taurus is known for. 1.
