AI identifes retinal age from single picture of the eye

AI identifes retinal age from single picture of the eye

Our retina contains far more than just information about our eyes. Its blood vessels are directly visible, it is affected by conditions like diabetes and inflammation, and as part of the central nervous system, it is closely connected to the brain. A simple photograph of the retina can therefore provide a remarkable window into our health. Olga Trofimova, a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Sven Bergmann’s research group in the Department of Computational Biology (DBC) at the University of Lausanne, used an artificial intelligence (AI) model to ask a seemingly simple question: how old is a person’s retina? The difference between the AI-estimated age and the person’s actual age provides insights into biological ageing, helping to identify those with accelerated ageing and a higher risk of certain diseases. The study, carried out in collaboration with colleagues at the Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital in Lausanne and Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, is published in the 26 August 2026 issue of Nature Communications. The gap between retinal age and chronological age provides important clues The researchers adapted RETFound, an AI foundation model …

Future Mars astronauts may need eye surgery millions of miles from Earth

Future Mars astronauts may need eye surgery millions of miles from Earth

An exploratory space-medicine experiment sent 135 unpackaged intraocular lenses outside the International Space Station to learn how materials used in cataract surgery respond to vacuum, radiation, ultraviolet light, atomic oxygen and temperature cycling. Among 61 returned lenses examined so far, most showed no notable exposure-associated findings, but some developed cracking, surface roughening, yellow discoloration or an unexplained cobblestone-like surface appearance. The work does not show that cataract surgery can yet be performed in space. Instead, it addresses an earlier problem: how surgical lenses, equipment and sterile supplies might survive transport and storage during future missions to the Moon and Mars. A future astronaut who develops a serious cataract while traveling to Mars may face a problem no spacecraft can solve by simply turning around. The journey could take many months, evacuation may be impractical, and the patient could eventually need treatment millions of kilometers from the nearest hospital. That possibility has prompted Texas eye surgeon Dr. Morgan Micheletti to begin testing whether one of cataract surgery’s most important components can survive the space environment. Micheletti, …

Mrs Brown’s Boys future teased by cast: “Keep an eye on the schedules”

Mrs Brown’s Boys future teased by cast: “Keep an eye on the schedules”

Last month, Mrs Brown’s Boys fans were dealt a blow, as it was announced that the show’s upcoming Christmas and New Year’s specials had been cancelled. This was due to an “unexpected medical issue”, as creator and star Brendan O’Carroll had to undergo “immediate surgery and a few months’ recovery”. Now, speaking after the show won the Comedy award at this year’s National Television Awards, the cast and creatives behind the series have teased that it could be back on our screens sooner than we might have expected. Speaking exclusively with Radio Times in the video above, Sharon McGoogan star Fiona Gibney said that “2027 is the one to watch, definitely”. Director Ben Kellett added that fans should “watch this space,” before Gibney continued, saying: “Just keep an eye on the schedules for the New Year, and definitely all the socials will tell you what’s going on. We’ll be back, and then obviously we’ll have a new tour as well, which will be great.” The cast of Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special. BBC Studios/Elaine Livingston Reflecting …

Raj Parmar, now 33 and living in Leicester, was diagnosed with myelofibrosis in October 2015 when an optometrist spotted blood in his eyes during a routine eye test. Despite feeling fit and healthy, a subsequent bone marrow biopsy confirmed the presence of the rare cancer. The condition affects bone marrow and is more common in people over the age of 60, according to Macmillan. While Raj’s disease progressed relatively slowly for several years, by 2020 his condition became so severe that he needed to have a stem cell transplant, which Macmillan says can be a cure for the disease in some patients. The transplant was successful, and Raj …

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launches on an eye opening mission : NPR

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, will launch on Aug. 30. NASA hide caption toggle caption NASA The universe is a strange place — filled with exploding stars, ancient galaxies, and unseen worlds. Now, astronomers are about to get a brand new tool to explore it. The $4.3-billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled for launch Aug. 30. Named for NASA’s first chief astronomer, the observatory is expected to reveal new information about the expansion of the universe and discover multitudes of planets orbiting distant stars. Roman, as it is known to its friends, has an unusual history. About 15 years ago NASA was making plans to build a space telescope that could, among other things, search for exploding stars known as Type 1A supernovas. These supernovas were used as a kind of cosmological measuring stick to uncover a mysterious force called dark energy that was causing the universe to expand — a discovery that earned the Nobel Prize in 2011. Cosmologist Daniel Scolnic at Duke University says …

Naomi Watts to Receive Zurich Fest Golden Eye Award

Naomi Watts to Receive Zurich Fest Golden Eye Award

The Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) will honor two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts this year with a Golden Eye Award for her performance in Ben Shirinian’s The Housewife. In the ’60s-set drama, based on a true-story, a young New York Times journalist, played by Tye Sheridan, tracks down a man he suspects of being a Nazi officer living secretly in Queens (Luke Evans). But when the reporter befriends the suspect’s elegant and enigmatic wife (Watts), the implications of his investigation become much more unsettling. The Housewife will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival before heading to Zurich. Watts will accept her Golden Eye honor in person in Zurich on Sept. 26 and take part in a ZFF masterclass. “Since her breakthrough in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Naomi Watts has been one of the most fascinating actresses of our time,” said Zurich Festival CEO Christian Jungen, announcing the honor on Thursday. “Her greatest performances thrive on the tension between glamour and darkness, between what a character reveals and what she conceals — making her …

Years, a subscription service offering fresh dog food “tailored” to an animal’s needs, emailed customers on Monday night to state it had identified a “potential link” between its buckwheat ingredient and a dry eye condition. The business, which boasts that its fresh meals are prepared by chefs, urged owners to stop feeding Years’ products to their pets or any other animal. Years stated that by Sunday, it had received reports of 57 suspected cases of dry eye. The company said on its website: “This follows a small number of reports of dogs having a potential adverse eye reaction to buckwheat, a common and approved ingredient, which we include in our meals. As of 16th August, this has affected 0.1% of our …
