Senegal win Afcon title after farcical scenes over penalty award

Senegal win Afcon title after farcical scenes over penalty award

RABAT, Jan 18 : Senegal stormed off the field in protest at a penalty awarded against them before returning to beat hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time and win the Africa Cup of Nations amid farcical scenes in Sunday’s final. Midfielder Pape Gueye netted the 94th-minute winner after Morocco’s star player Brahim Diaz had squandered the chance to win it for the home side by fluffing the last-gasp penalty in normal time following a 14-minute delay. Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw ordered his players off and it was talisman Sadio Mane who persuaded them to return. The penalty was awarded following a VAR check by Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala after Diaz had been tugged to the ground by Senegal full back El Hadji Malick Diouf while defending a corner five minutes into stoppage time. Officials and players jostled with each other while the referee consulted the touchline screen and again when Senegal walked off. Once the players returned to the field, Diaz inexplicably tried a Panenka-style chip and his weak penalty sailed tamely into the …

Kyrgios defeats Sabalenka in farcical ‘Battle of Sexes’ pantomime

Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of the “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition tennis match between women’s world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios, the bad boy of the sport who has tumbled down the rankings in recent years. This ‘Battle of the Sexes’ follows in the trainer steps of the ground-breaking 1973 match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. The tennis legend beat 55-year-old Riggs in straight sets and Sabalenka suggests that today’s contest can “bring women’s tennis to a higher level”. Well, it is tennis but not (quite) as we know it, Jim. Based on data from the players’ sports agency Evolve about average movement and speed which suggests women are nine per cent slower, Sabalenka’s side of the court will accordingly be nine per cent smaller. Each player will only have one serve rather than two, in an attempt to negate Kyrgios’s superior power. (Although frankly, Sabalenka is capable of serving 120mph rockets too). In this best-of-three contest, a 10-point tiebreaker will decide the winner if Kyrgios and …

How can “Saturday Night Live” parody a farcical administration?

How can “Saturday Night Live” parody a farcical administration?

Some of the most durable “Saturday Night Live” sketches are game show parodies. It’s not hard to understand why – the genre runs on the universal appeal of gambling, with many offering a shot at fast money mixed with puzzle or trivia games of skill and elements of chance. But the classics test the players’ intelligence more than their luck, making their outcome less predictable. Hence, people love Alex Trebek’s “Jeopardy” and Darnell Hayes’ “Black Jeopardy” on “SNL.” Minus a few champions who enjoy insane winning streaks on the former, we can’t predict who will win; even contestants with a genius I.Q. can be defeated by someone with bulletproof strategy. “Black Jeopardy,” on the other hand, lands its jokes by fooling the audience into thinking it knows how the contestant Kenan Thompson’s Darnell sets up as the stooge will perform, then quickly turns that assumption on its ear. Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa from “Black Panther,” for example, was entirely out of his depth when called upon to answer questions about American black culture. So was Elizabeth …
