A New York bagel fest comes to L.A. showing best of West Coast innovation

A New York bagel fest comes to L.A. showing best of West Coast innovation

Bold flavors and local reinventions were at the forefront of Sunday’s inaugural BagelFest West, where bagel makers from California, as well as Seattle and Colorado Springs, offered their best bagels plus unconventional takes on the bagel sandwich — from a Passover-style gefilte fish Hillel sandwich with beet horseradish and charoset served by San Diego’s Mission Bagel to a coffee bomb bagel by Tom and Tiffany Levy’s Uncle Stevey’s in El Segundo. “The bites that we’ve seen here today are some of the most innovative and groundbreaking bagel bites that I’ve ever had,” said Sam Silverman, who founded the original New York BagelFest in 2019 and goes by the social media handle Bagel Ambassador. Silverman has watched the bagel scene west of the Rockies explode, prompting him to bring BagelFest to Los Angeles. It was a sold-out event, with more than 1,000 bagel aficionados from all of California gathered at Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s Audrey Irmas Pavilion. Promoter defends plan for Kanye West to headline London fest

Promoter defends plan for Kanye West to headline London fest

LONDON: One of the promoters of an annual London music festival on Monday (Apr 6) defended plans for Kanye West to headline it, amid a backlash over the US rapper’s previous antisemitic outbursts. Disgraced 48-year-old hip-hop star West – now known as Ye – is due to play three nights at the Wireless Festival in the British capital in July as part of a European comeback tour. The decision to book him as the headliner has already prompted several sponsors to pull out of the event, including drinks giants Pepsi and Diageo. According to media reports, the government is reviewing whether West should be allowed to enter the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer having already called his booking “deeply concerning”. In a statement issued late Monday, Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic which helps promote the event, urged West’s critics to show him “some forgiveness”. Benn called the rapper’s past comments about Jews and Hitler “abhorrent” but said the festival would not provide “a platform to extol opinion of whatever nature”. He asked critics …

Barbie Dream Fest in Florida labeled ‘the next Willy Wonka Experience’ after disastrous event leaves fans furious

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Barbie fans have been left outraged after Barbie Dream Fest turned out to be more of a nightmare. In a disastrous event rivalling the likes of Glasgow’s Willy Wonka Experience in 2024, ticket holders who paid up to $450 for last weekend’s event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, discovered that instead of the life-sized DreamHouse and glittery installations that had been promised, they were met with empty concrete floors and swag bags filled with $1 hand sanitizer. Pictures from the convention center during Barbie Dream Fest showed cardboard sets, pink traffic cones to set up a “bicycle course,” and limited vendors. The VIP tickets — which cost up to $452.50 — came with a “swag bag” that included a plastic hairbrush and dollar store brand …

How Quentin Tarantino’s One-Night “Detest Fest” Changed His Life & Set Him on the Path to Pulp Fiction

How Quentin Tarantino’s One-Night “Detest Fest” Changed His Life & Set Him on the Path to Pulp Fiction

Just days ago, a game came out whose unlikely premise has already drawn a good deal of attention. “Manage your very own video store in the early 90s!” exclaims the description of Retro Rewind. “Rent, sell, decorate and expand your business from the ground up and relive the golden ages of video rentals!” Those of us old enough to have relied on such establishments for our early cinematic education can all too easily remember how frustrating they could be, what with their physically limited selections, seldom-rewound tapes, and punitive late fees. Even so, younger generations aren’t wrong to imagine that some were special places where it felt like a cinephile’s dreams could come true. Just ask Quentin Tarantino. The clip above comes from Joe Rogan’s interview with Tarantino and Roger Avary, who worked together at Manhattan Beach’s Video Archives before they co-wrote Pulp Fiction. “Working at that store, I just got caught up in the little life there,” Tarantino says. Yet he also remembers himself thinking, “Well, this isn’t my dream. This isn’t what I wanted …

Thailand’s ‘Death Fest’ invites visitors to embrace mortality

Thailand’s ‘Death Fest’ invites visitors to embrace mortality

NONTHABURI, Thailand (AP) — Thailand’s “Death Fest” invites people to confront mortality while also offering practical services and spiritual advice for the inevitable. The unusual fair, now in its second year, has broached the subject that’s uncomfortable for many. It’s also one of the central teachings of Buddhism, which shapes much of Thailand’s culture, about life’s unavoidable sufferings: birth, old age, sickness and death. Sangduan Ngamvinijaroon attended the three-day event Friday with her mother in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. She said death used to be a difficult subject for her family, but having spent more than 20 years caring for ill family members, including her husband with a stroke and relatives with cancer, she has witnessed several deaths firsthand and now feels more at ease talking about it. She said she liked the fair because “it’s not just about dying well. It’s also about the present moment and taking good care of our lives while we’re still here.” The event brought together experts and organizations involved in health care, financial planning, palliative care, funeral services …
