The superfans known as the ‘Spurs Nuns’ aiming to bring divine intervention to the NBA Finals

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Victor Wembanyama stepped off the court for a moment before Game 1 of the NBA Finals, accepted greetings from a handful of well-wishers in San Antonio Spurs jerseys, then bowed his head to join them in a quick prayer. They’re the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco. On game nights, they’re called the Spurs Nuns. New York has Ben Stiller, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan among its superfans; San Antonio has a group of nuns who wear Spurs jerseys over their habits. It’s a relationship that goes back at least 20 years or so, and to the sisters it makes perfect sense. “We’re serving the poor and the young,” said Sr. Bernadette Mota, the director of the department of mission advancement for the Salesian Sisters. “And in order to reach the young where they’re at, you have to love what they love and then they’ll love who you love. So, we have that affinity with the Spurs because it gives us an avenue to do our mission with the young people that …

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama walks off the court as time expires during the second half of Game 2 of the NBA Finals basketball series as New York Knicks guard Landry Shamet (44), guard Josh Hart (3), and center Mitchell Robinson (23) celebrate, Friday, June 5, 2026, in San Antonio. Eric Gay/AP hide caption toggle caption Eric Gay/AP SAN ANTONIO — Go crazy, New York. Or, perhaps more accurately, crazier. The red-hot Knicks are going home, two wins away from an NBA championship that the capital of the world has been waiting to see for generations. Jalen Brunson hit a go-ahead free throw with 9.5 seconds left after a turnover by Victor Wembanyama moments earlier, then Wembanyama missed a jumper at the end of New York’s 105-104 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night for a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals. “What a ballgame,” Knicks coach Mike Brown marveled. Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Brunson and Mikal Bridges each scored 20 for the Knicks. They have won …

NBA, Stanley Cup Finals Open to Big Ratings for ABC

NBA, Stanley Cup Finals Open to Big Ratings for ABC

ABC has aced the first test of its finals week. The network saw big audiences for the opening games of both the NHL Stanley Cup Finals on Tuesday and the NBA Finals on Wednesday. Both telecasts were the best this decade for the first game of either series. Starting with the larger audience: Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs averaged 16.93 million viewers, the best for the series opener since 2018. Wednesday’s game grew by 90 percent from the last year’s game 1 (8.91 million). The Knicks’ 105-95 win in San Antonio drew the fifth largest audience for the NBA Finals opener in the 24 years ABC has had rights to the series, behind the four straight matchups between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers from 2015-18. Having a team from the country’s largest media market in the Knicks certainly helped ABC. The Spurs, led by rising superstar Victor Wembanyama, have also been a big draw during the postseason: Their Western Conference finals clincher against …

Knicks Looking to Take Command of NBA Finals, Spurs Hoping to Tie the Title Series

Knicks Looking to Take Command of NBA Finals, Spurs Hoping to Tie the Title Series

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Jalen Brunson was the star of Game 1 of the NBA Finals, willing the New York Knicks to a series-opening win. Victor Wembanyama, even while struggling from the field, put up big numbers for the San Antonio Spurs in his finals debut as well. The finals, though, tends to get won by the sum of the other parts. Game 2 of the title series is Friday night in San Antonio, with the Spurs hoping to pull into a tie before the series heads to New York — and the Knicks aiming at becoming the first team since Houston in 1995 to start the NBA Finals with two road wins. Tipoff is at 8:42 p.m. EDT and the game will be aired on ABC. The Spurs are 6.5-point favorites. New York got 30 points from Brunson in the Game 1 win, in which the Knicks rallied from 14 points down in the third quarter and closed the game on an 11-0 run. And while Brunson got tons of credit, the Knicks pointed …

Elmo — a New Yorker — faces the wrath of Knicks fans after neutral NBA Finals post

On Wednesday, the Muppet character made the mistake of wishing both the Knicks and their opponents, the San Antonio Spurs, well just before tip-off. “Elmo hopes both teams have fun!,” he wrote on X. It did not take long for fans to point out that Sesame Street is canonically based in Manhattan, making Elmo a bona fide New Yorker. His tweet did not go down well. “This isn’t the time for sportsmanship Elmo. These streets ain’t sesame,” wrote one bitter fan. The Knicks Fans Are Coming! New York’s Basketball Fanatics Descend on San Antonio for Game 1 of the NBA Finals

Hotel Emma, a repurposed 19th-century brewhouse in the Pearl district of midtown San Antonio, is used to accommodating high rollers. Past guests include Paul McCartney, Adam Sandler, and Cher, who has called it “one of the most unique, beautiful hotels ever.” But it has never played host to what is perhaps the wealthiest and most famous fan base in all of professional sports, staring down a chance to end a championship drought of over 50 years. When New York Knicks fans arrive in Texas on Wednesday for Game 1 of the NBA finals against the San Antonio Spurs, a rematch of their team’s last losing finals appearance in 1999, they will enter what Hotel Emma CEO Jon Sakshaug described as a city “on fire.” “This is as exciting as this city has been in a long, long time,” Sakshaug told Vanity Fair. “And that comes from the opponent being the Knicks, which is a world-class brand.” The Knicks’ courtside fan contingent is a complex celebrity ecosystem, with Ben Stiller and Spike Lee among the most …

In this sun-baked Texan city, San Antonio Spurs players often bump into fans at the supermarket, mingling easily with a community that has embraced its young team, which has carried the franchise back to the NBA Finals. The Spurs are everywhere in this city of 1.5 million people, where Latinos form a majority of the population. The team’s name adorns restaurant windows, cafes and bars. Black-and-silver pennants flutter from front porches while residents proudly wear jerseys bearing the iconic spur logo. On the city’s south side stands a giant, 5.5-metre figure of Victor Wembanyama, unveiled in 2023 – the year the 2.24-metre French prodigy arrived in Texas and transformed the fortunes of the franchise.
