In the autumn of 2024, Alabama Shakes showed no sign of ending their indefinite hiatus – and nobody was asking them to. Seven years had passed since the blues-soul-rock band, who exploded out of Athens, Alabama in 2009, had last shared a stage. Their transatlantic Top 10 2012 debut Boys & Girls announced them; the million-selling 2015 follow-up Sound & Color went to No 1 in the US and won them four Grammys. Their fanbase included Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant and Barack Obama. But by 2017 they were physically and creatively spent, and they stopped. NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A man accused of fleeing to Hong Kong after his wife’s body was found in a freezer in their Virginia apartment has been apprehended, authorities said. David Varela, a 38-year-old Navy Reservist, was wanted on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Lina M. Guerra, 39, who was found dead at their Norfolk apartment in February, FBI Director Kash Patel announced in a social media post. Varela had been on the run for more than two months, “but justice doesn’t forget,” he said. Varela was returned to the United States on Wednesday and remains in California, where he faces federal charges, Norfolk police said Thursday in a news release. A notice filed Wednesday in federal court in San Francisco states that Varela was arrested on an unlawful flight warrant and accused of fleeing to Hong Kong from Virginia to avoid prosecution for first-degree murder and concealing a dead body to prevent detection. A police pursuit that started in Anaheim on Wednesday night ended with the suspect’s vehicle colliding with another car, killing the driver, officials said. The suspect, identified Thursday as 21-year-old Darvin Felipe Bahamon Martinez, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony evading police and vehicular manslaughter, according to the Placentia Police Department. The victim was identified only as a Placentia man in his 60s, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Eric Anderson. Anaheim police initiated an enforcement stop at 7:41 p.m. Wednesday when officers saw a dark-colored Jeep Gladiator driving recklessly in the area of Mira Loma and Lawrence avenues, Anaheim police said. The driver initially yielded, but as officers approached his car on foot, he suddenly accelerated. Anaheim police then used emergency lights and a siren to attempt to perform a second enforcement stop as the driver fled into the neighboring city of Placentia.
