Like clockwork, Motorola is back with a new set of Razr folding flip phones. The formula is the same as last year, with three phones differing in specs and price: the Razr Ultra, Razr+, and Razr. But alongside these models, Motorola is finally launching its first-ever book-style folding phone, the Razr Fold, which it first teased at CES 2026. The company announced the new handsets at an event in Los Angeles, where it also revealed a new pair of Moto Buds 2 Plus wireless earbuds that look eerily like Apple’s AirPods Pro, but in blue; these will retail for $150 and will be available on April 30. Sadly, all of Motorola’s folding flips are getting price increases, in line with what we’re seeing from competitors like Samsung. The Razr Ultra is $1,500, the Razr+ costs $1,100, and the Razr starts at $800—that’s a $200, $100, and $100 price bump over their predecessors, respectively. Other Folding Phones to Consider Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 Photograph: Julian Chokkattu Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 for $1,056: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip7 (7/10, WIRED Recommends) is a close second to Motorola’s Razr Ultra. I liked the camera quality from Motorola’s latest flip more than Samsung’s, a big win for the Razr, but the Flip7 captures nice photos and offers better video quality, if that’s your thing. Samsung’s latest Flip has a larger front screen, though you still have to jump through a few hoops to make it useful. For example, you need to install an app called Multistar to add any app of your choosing to the cover screen. The phone also has a lackluster battery life, struggling to last a full day; the Razr Ultra still only lasts a day, but I didn’t feel like I had to plug in as much. Motorola does have another actual new phone: the Signature. It’s a new line of “premium” phones, but the catch is that these devices won’t be sold in the US. For its candy-bar phones, Motorola has dipped its toes into flagship territory every so often, only to dip back out as it struggles to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung; it’s predominantly known for its Moto G budget phones, particularly in the US. The Signature is just 6.99 millimeters thick—it’s no iPhone Air, but that’s thinner than your usual handset—and it has a fabric-like material on the back. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, has four 50-megapixel cameras on the back, and carries a 5,200-mAh silicon-carbon battery in tow. More importantly, Motorola is finally committing to seven years of blanket software updates for this phone. It’s a shame US customers won’t be able to enjoy that. You can run three apps side-by-side, two apps at once, or one big app across the whole screen. PHOTOGRAPH: Julian Chokkattu There are two titanium hinges, and they open up three panels. You can place a full-size app on each of the three panes, use a larger version of split-screen, or expand one app across the vast display. It was easy to configure these setups, and I can totally see myself taking advantage of having three apps open simultaneously. It is still a little unwieldy to hold, but that’s not unusual for a 10-inch tablet. The TriFold is very slim in its unfolded state, which helps. Fold it up, and you’re looking at a thickness of 12.9 millimeters, which is just a smidge chunkier than the Galaxy Z Fold6 (12.1 mm). The fact that it’s roughly the same thickness as a prior generation fold, yet with a dramatically larger screen, is impressive. It makes the bulk a little more palatable. This was a surprisingly fun year for smartphones. I wasn’t expecting it to be; the category is often described as stale or “plateaued.” But as WIRED’s resident phone reviewer, I’ve tested nearly all of this year’s handsets—devices as cheap as $130 all the way to an eye-watering $2,000—and I don’t think there’s been a year filled with as many varied styles in quite some time. It all started with the Nothing Phone (3a) series, which the UK company launched at Mobile World Congress early in the year. While I wasn’t a fan of the Pro model’s top-heavy camera module, the electric blue Phone (3a) is a standout. It looks like no other smartphone on the market, with a transparent backplate, a pop of color from a small red square, and the company’s signature Glyph lights, which blink when you receive notifications. Those LEDs may not be the most useful, but they’re fun and wacky. That whimsical design has been sorely lacking for several years. Remember 2020’s LG Wing?
