Their powdery look comes from tiny scales made of sensitive hairs that help moths stay stable in the air, thermoregulate, and taste sweet and bitter molecules. Now, a study recently published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that in tobacco hawkmoths (Manduca sexta), they can even help the insects smell.  A team of scientists in Germany initially suspected that moth wings may be able to detect certain aromas based on earlier research.  “The tobacco hawkmoth was recently found to have receptor proteins in its wings that could detect different smells and tastes,” study co-author Sonja Bisch-Knaden, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, explained in a statement.  …

Good Dog! More Children’s Hospitals Turn to Furry Caregivers to Help Kids Heal

CINCINNATI (AP) — The first time 5-year-old Calvin Owens went outside in more than a month, he met up with his canine friend Hadley on a hospital patio. Despite being tethered to equipment with wires and tubes, the little boy managed to stand up near his wheelchair long enough to toss her a ball. He smiled as she ran to fetch it. Caregivers cheered. “Look how good you’re doing!” said Hadley’s handler, Schellie Scott. Such small victories and moments of joy are common whenever Hadley or one of the other three facility dogs at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital show up. These furry caregivers aren’t the typical therapy dogs volunteers bring to hospitals to comfort patients. They are specially trained, full-time working dogs that provide emotional support during stressful procedures, motivate kids to move around and make hospitals seem less scary. And experts say their ranks are growing at children’s hospitals across the nation. A mounting body of research shows that even short interactions with facility dogs can improve children’s overall well-being, decrease the pain they feel …

The Best Cat Toys for Your Furry Friend (2026)

The Best Cat Toys for Your Furry Friend (2026)

Cats are beautiful, interesting, weird creatures. They’re also very picky. Finding cat toys that they’ll actually play with is tough, especially with the oversaturation of the pet market today. Cats require a specific environment to play, scratch, and relax. Based on years of testing with our cats, these are our favorite WIRED-approved, techy cat toys (and furniture). Even if our cats rejected a particular product, we still examined overall construction, design, and value to determine whether it may be useful for other kitties. We have tested everything on this list with our own cats. All of these toys have an element to engage their natural instincts, like an interactive mat that mimics the movements of prey or a puzzle toy so your cat has to use their pecan-sized brain to get rewarded with delicious treats. Plus, increasing vertical space with cat furniture is a great way to provide passive enrichment. I’m a helicopter cat mom specializing in pet tech, and all of the cat toys and furniture in this guide are approved by my and …
