It’s 2:17 a.m. A patient sits in an emergency observation room after telling a physician that they intend to end their life when they leave the hospital. They answer questions coherently, understand the risks of refusing treatment, and calmly insist that they do not want help. Despite this, the psychiatrist places the patient on an involuntary psychiatric hold, preventing them from leaving and initiating treatment without consent. Seems like the obvious choice, right? The psychiatrist is saving the patient’s life. But doesn’t this also go directly against the patient’s right to refuse treatment as an adult?  Situations like this illustrate one of the central ethical conflicts in psychiatry: the tension between patient autonomy and clinical responsibility. While patients generally have the right to refuse medical care, mental health professionals may override this right when an individual is considered an imminent danger to themselves or others. This practice is particularly common in cases of severe major depressive disorder (MDD) with suicidal ideation, a condition associated with significant changes in mood and cognition.  Major depressive disorder affects …

NASA call targets key lunar technologies for future Moon Base

NASA has announced a call for proposals to develop the lunar technologies needed to support exploration and establish a long-term human presence at the Moon’s South Pole. The agency is targeting major gaps in power generation, oxygen production, manufacturing and advanced materials as it works towards a future Moon Base. The call forms part of NASA’s Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships-3, or NextSTEP-3, and focuses on technologies that could eventually operate in the harsh lunar environment. NASA wants competing solutions to be matured and demonstrated, helping move critical systems closer to operational use. The result could be a new generation of lunar infrastructure capable of producing power and resources locally while reducing dependence on supplies launched from Earth. NASA says the programme will support US-led capabilities while allowing participation from private companies, universities, non-profit organisations and international partners working through US-led teams. This week, Lyft riders in Nashville, Tennessee, who request a ride on the app might get matched with a new driver: a robot. A new partnership between the ride-hail company and Waymo, the self-driving-vehicle developer, will integrate self-driving rides into Lyft’s platform. (Riders can also request a driverless ride through Waymo’s own app; service there started in April.) The rollout marks a new milestone for Lyft, which has worked with other, smaller self-driving vehicle companies in the US, but never with a partner as big as Waymo, which operates in 14 US metros. Lyft executives also see the partnership as a continuation of a conversation the ride-hail company has been having for a few years now with its hundreds of thousands of US drivers. Lyft, like its competitor Uber, insists that its platform will be a “hybrid network” for a long while yet, as human drivers work alongside robot ones. On Monday, NYU’s Buckmaster posted a proof on the social media site Mastodon showing that a simplified version of the Navier–Stokes equations can indeed break down—a major step forward on the Millennium Problem. He and Alpöge had worked on the problem for almost a year, using publicly available models from both OpenAI and Anthropic. Then today, OpenAI presented a proof showing that the full Navier–Stokes equations can break down as well. The proof was obtained using an internal model that dramatically outperforms the already-impressive Astra model, which was only released last week. The company says it does not plan to claim the million-dollar prize for solving the problem. These mathematical achievements are indisputably impressive, but they have attracted far less attention than the controversy about their origins.
